GTiR23 True, but he did say that he was scared, and for real, and wouldn't ever ride passenger with Max again...lol Not meaning it I'm sure... Of course, he was proud and very impressed by his son's ability. He also said, "Hasn't this lad learned to drive, or what..? It kinda means this... as he's proclaiming Max can certainly drive... that's it roughly translated.
Also... Max said... "It pisses me off when you keep saying brake... brake at every corner..." lol to which Ari replied... "No I didn't... no I didn't..." Classic stuff. Ari is a legend and his son can obviously drive the bejeesus out of a car. All good lol
It's exactly this. When you're so much an experienced pilot, it's hard to not be a bit afraid, moreover when it's your son driving. But yeah, he's definetely proud of his boy, and all the thumbs up during the turns are showing it.
Seems perfectly normal he was afraid, racing car drivers tend to be afraid when they are not in control of the car themselves :) Max probably drove perfectly fine but because Ari cannot control what happens he was scared! :)
I have to plead guilty to being that way in any car with any person, that's why I could never be a co-driver lol. But yeah I was getting the same feeling just from his body language.
You have hit the nail on the head, I have raced in Time Attack series in 750HP awd cars, I was driving it was fine, my mate jumps in the seat and takes me for a spin and it felt like the car had an extra 200hp, man the G load was all of a sudden very apparent too.......lol. I think if you can scare Ari though, you must be driving pretty well.
Pilots can be like that too. My very first plane trip, I was ten years old going with my Dad. 1964. I remember it was a Boeing 707 - big for that time. The man in the window seat buried his face in his hands and I could see he was shaking as we started to roll on the take off. He stayed that way until the "Seatbelts Off" chime sounded. The man told my dad he was a Lancaster bomber pilot in the war and still got terrified like he did back then if someone else was at the controls. He was fine for the rest of the flight. By coincidence he had ended up sitting next to my dad, who machined RR Merlin engine parts in Britain during the war.
Ye maybe because when you're not driving on the right seat you are more scared because you feel like you have no control and you have to trust the driver so thats scary
"I am not going to come to your ride anymore again - I was afraid! I am not goin to come again! Max, you drove well.....The boy has developed a lot since last time!"
Brilliant. Ari if you are going to be frightened then best let your son do it as he has been taught from the best and thats Ari "Balls out" Vatanen the legend.
Great job Max ;) You are your fathers son, thats for sure :) A great father & son moment there too. After meeting Ari yesterday in Belfast and having him sign my 205 GTI, he will forever be, as he always has been, my hero! He's the reason i drive what i drive, and why i drive it with such passion .... and flat out :) Great to see you following in his footsteps. Much respect Max ....
Maybe now, Ari understands the "dear god" from his Co-driver back in the day.. xD naaa im just kidding :) he is a legend, and it is always tougher at that seat. My hats of to any Co-driver, they have the balls! :)
Your father is not only a genius behind the wheel but more importantly, a wonderful human being. I had the honour of being is passenger here in Oporto last weekend. Not for one second I was afraid! Give him a hug from Mario!
Impressive, really impressive. You're clearly your father's son... I'd love to see him race against Walter Röhrl today. Your father in an Escort Mk.II or Manta B and Röhrl in a Fiat 131 Abarth or an Ascona B. I'm sure that would be a day to remember. Man, it must be awesome to be so close to a legend on a daily basis... ;-)
Max Vatanen Have you ever driven a group 4 Escort like your dad did in '82. The "Black Beauty" being my favourite. If so is there any footage? I'm curious too see if "like father like son" applies! All the best.
maladsyko same situation with my dad, that's why i can't wait to by my first own car ( i already have a license ofcourse) and my first car will hopefully be BMW E92 M3
J'adore voir Monsieur Ari Vatanen depuis tout petit. Chaque fois que je le vois dans une vidéo je me régale à le voir conduire ou à l'écouter parler. Il a un énorme talent et un énorme capital sympathie .
Nice video, great driving. I´m from cordoba, argentina. Your father had a serious accident here many years ago. But we all remember him here for his great driving and his speed. Great to see he is still enjoying his passion with you. Greetings from argentina, hope to see you here in Argentina Rally (wrc) soon!!
I think he was just joking about being afraid,A man like Vatanen has wrestled with Group B monsters of the past so he won't really be scared unless like he said his son might not be concentrating properly in really quick places. The reality is a son with a Rally Icon for his father probably won't really impress dad no matter what.Had Colin Mcrae lived imagine his son trying to impress him at the limit, yeah try impressing someone who lives over the limit. The thing is though most race drivers are nervous when they are being driven really quickly and they see you do things that will get you in trouble quickly at the limit.
come on ari, you were one of the craziest fearless rally driver ever, world rally champion, pike peaks record, group b racing... remember the time when you were young haha.
+Kevin Huang This here shows perfectly that the co-drivers are actually the truly crazy ones. Sure you have to be crazy to drive a 500hp AWD car with primitive handling through narrow forrest roads, but you have to be even crazier if you are going to be a passenger in one :)
wow. wow. wow you gotta post a forward cam alongside so we can see the stage from your perspective or dad's. Please Max! brilliant - just brilliant! Best of luck whatever you do fella :-)
I’ve been like that with my Sister behind the wheel in rush hour traffic. Went to a Sci-Fi/comic book convention with my sister, her now husband, and one of their co-workers. I pumped that imaginary pedal with both feet there and back and walked about 10 miles while we were there....I could barely make it up the back steps into the house by the time we got home. Keep in mind that until 2 years before that I was a regular at a local gym and would go heavy on leg day and worked retail as well!
Hi Max, thanks for sharing! Had the pleasure to meet "The Legend" today here in Portugal!! It must be hard for you to live up to his reputation, but seeing this video, you seem on the right way :D When will you upgrade for the R5? Good things for you both, and your family are my wishes!!
When your brain is wired up to 1970s and 1980s car braking and suspension performance, he was probably just surprised at the sort of corner speeds and braking performance of a modern Fiesta. He'd probably have loved a car like that in his pomp.
Matt, probably depends on the stage. If you would put modern tires on a group B Peugeot or Audi I think the Group B car can beat the current generation of WRC Cars
You forgot say Lancia ;) But Group B always will be remembered as era when rally cars demanded so much more than today. based on what I've seen onboards and documents over time, Nothing can match the beasts that Group B cars where. such shame that due to bad spectator control (specially that) they got banned. with maybe few changes they could have kept going.
getting constant thumbs up for your driving, by a Rally LEGEND...does it get any better than that? well yes, its even better if that legend is your father. well done
No worried looks there....all I saw was the yoda of rallying riding with his young apprentice and having great pride the youngster is more than capable
The dad has lived inside a rally car for 40 years pretty much so it's nothing new to him but ofc you aren't as crazy as you were younger I'm not sure but i think he actually said "faster" a bit after 2 minutes.
I'm of the opinion , that Ari would still scare the pants off Max .... I see a proud Dad , and ONE of the BEST rally drivers , in his time, the world has ever seen. !!!!
Awesome!!! You must get a top ford drive. To be fords number 1 driver just like dad would warm my heart. Get behind the wheel of a serious car (mk2 escort) and lets have a proper look at you :-) to this day I believe that your dad is the greatest all round driver..... period!! Only senna compares. Nice to see you following in his footsteps. Much love and respect
The old escorts have become very popular cars again. Many drivers are getting rid of the evo types and going back to the old rear drive cars.....this can only be a good thing. The evos onboard computers doing as much driving as the drivers cant be good. Its not really a true reflection of the drivers skill when you are computer aided
yep, exactly agreed! i hate nowadays WRC because new computer things and AWD and of course ugly car design... i just hope that the old cars would get in producting again :3
MrBanaanipommi theres been talk of ford putting the mk 2 escort shell back into production again because of the high prices they cost to buy.........dont know how true it is but if true a brand new mk 2 escort is a posibility once again
arent they still making the shell or whatever it is?? not whole car but just the shell? whole car would be cool, and ALL is same what it was when they first came out! thats my dream, im dreaming of winning in lottery to buy that big hall near our house to start to making old cars!
LMFAO Nice work Max! I'v raced Pikes Peak (motorcycles) for 20 years and was up there when Climb Dance was filmed. It's a shame you won't be able to experience that road with decomposed granite. Hope to see you up there some year!
that's true, i guess it's because as a driver you have the control over the car and you know how your actions/driving will reflect on the car behavior even before you do anything, but as a co-driver you don't have the control and you don't know how much of the driving and sliding of the car were done on purpose ....strange phenomenon :)

It is impossible for a Finnish person to be scared in a car, they are genetically programmed to drive cars fast and to be honest i think it would take a lot more than that to scare Ari.👍👍
The way Ari used to drive was like he had ice water in his veins so this isn't going to scare him. Probably grimacing in a bit of pain since he's not a young man anymore but he was the iceman
I don't know either of them but if the father looked uncomfortable it was maybe because of pain in his body, from age? Just an observation, don't know them.
First of all sit near, not at the guide is so much different than driving the car. On Ari face there is a great tensionalso becouse at the guide there is his sun i think. But also the fact that Ari has loose the "race mind". At the end is a liberation, but he is also satisfation. Hard challange for a dad....
Scared? I see nothing but pride on Ari's face.
GTiR23 True, but he did say that he was scared, and for real, and wouldn't ever ride passenger with Max again...lol Not meaning it I'm sure... Fathers and sons ;)
for a driver not incontrol at those speeds its hard to just be a passenger
It's exactly this. When you're so much an experienced pilot, it's hard to not be a bit afraid, moreover when it's your son driving. But yeah, he's definetely proud of his boy, and all the thumbs up during the turns are showing it.
Lol, Max didn't lick it off a stone, knowing how they drive in Finland, he was probably bringing his dad down to the shops to buy a pint of milk.
lmao
Im finnish and happens all the time
Vatanen is also known for the milk shot after rally wins.
@@0wly and before every big battle especially against Roehrl and Stig.
O.K. - Max in a full safety suit, and Ari in a gingham shirt with a 70's era helmet. What could go wrong?
Yes, well done Max. Your father is not only a genius behind the wheel but more importantly, a wonderful human being. God bless
Seems perfectly normal he was afraid, racing car drivers tend to be afraid when they are not in control of the car themselves :) Max probably drove perfectly fine but because Ari cannot control what happens he was scared! :)

Dylan McCallister especially sergio cresto. Rip.

lol group B Driver scared.
Impossibru
It takes considerably more bravery to be a co-driver than a driver.
Personally I saw a lot of pride on Ari's face through that stage - very nice to watch.
I'd love to see Max's face when Ari performed the 'Oh dear God' moment :)
Haha damn right :D
Ari Vatanen and scared? I don't think so..
Der Eichbert I'm Finnish and i can understand what they said and the dad said he was scared
Ye maybe because when you're not driving on the right seat you are more scared because you feel like you have no control and you have to trust the driver so thats scary
The original iceman. It always feels different when you are a driver and sat in the passenger seat
nice job,Max,your dad is a true legend and was a true crazy driver!
ok...re-film with Ari driving....i bet he would have scared max.lol
Max would have done what Terry Harriman did.
"Dear God!"
"I am not going to come to your ride anymore again - I was afraid! I am not goin to come again! Max, you drove well.....The boy has developed a lot since last time!"
Brilliant. Ari if you are going to be frightened then best let your son do it as he has been taught from the best and thats Ari "Balls out" Vatanen the legend.

naaa im just kidding :) he is a legend, and it is always tougher at that seat. My hats of to any Co-driver, they have the balls! :)
Left ball: Trust
Right ball: Focus
Yeah, they're insane....ly skilled.
Your father is not only a genius behind the wheel but more importantly, a wonderful human being. I had the honour of being is passenger here in Oporto last weekend. Not for one second I was afraid! Give him a hug from Mario!
Taking thumps up from ARI means you are doing something very well... :)
Scaring ARI is priceless :-D
Impressive, really impressive. You're clearly your father's son...

Yes, would be great!
I bet there were a lot of co-drivers who would shake your hand Max for doing that to you dad...lol! My son did that to me a couple of weeks ago to.
haha he got a taste of being on the right seat!
Max Vatanen One day Max come Rally in New Zealand you will love it
Max Vatanen Have you ever driven a group 4 Escort like your dad did in '82. The "Black Beauty" being my favourite. If so is there any footage? I'm curious too see if "like father like son" applies! All the best.
His dad is a LEGEND, respect from Slovenija.
Lucky to have him as a father. No one better to have in your corner.
That’s fabulous piece of driving from you max
haha typical father / son moment!
as with my father ! he always irritated me as my passenger. that's why I'm not driving his car anymore with him sitting next to me
maladsyko same situation with my dad, that's why i can't wait to by my first own car ( i already have a license ofcourse) and my first car will hopefully be BMW E92 M3
Komppaan tätä! Suomi viina perkele isänmaa, saatananmoinen ralli päälle vaan
saksi kasi only understand dutch and English so if anyone can translate what he is say it would be great
Keihab Padeshah Hi man... check out my reply to the first comment by gtr...I translate a little. Enjoy.
Met Ari on Sunday at Ignition in Glasgow just before the drivers Q&A. What a genuinely nice man!
You could see it in Ari's face "My son is quicker than me" but seems very proud of it! Fair play.
Ari Vatanen, one of the best rally drivers ever. Nice to see him again, no matter on which side he takes place. :-)
J'adore voir Monsieur Ari Vatanen depuis tout petit. Chaque fois que je le vois dans une vidéo je me régale à le voir conduire ou à l'écouter parler. Il a un énorme talent et un énorme capital sympathie .
What a wonderful life father and son. Keep on healthy mr superVatanenman.

keeturbo not having control of a car that could crash at high speed at any moment can frighten many people
A driver always wants to be in control! This once again highlights the really brave people in rallying - the co-drivers!
come on ari, you were one of the craziest fearless rally driver ever, world rally champion, pike peaks record, group b racing... remember the time when you were young haha.
+Kevin Huang
It's worse when you're sitting in the passenger seat with no control.
+Kevin Huang This here shows perfectly that the co-drivers are actually the truly crazy ones. Sure you have to be crazy to drive a 500hp AWD car with primitive handling through narrow forrest roads, but you have to be even crazier if you are going to be a passenger in one :)
he should listen to the legend setting next to him ... ari vatenen is rally legend and Gr.B driver ... and got huge experience in the rallying ...
Max: *does a great corner at high speed*
DAD: *WAR FACE* *THUMBS UP!!*
wow. wow. wow
you gotta post a forward cam alongside so we can see the stage from your perspective or dad's.
Please Max!
brilliant - just brilliant!
Best of luck whatever you do fella :-)
Im a bad passenger. I go for an imaginary brake in the passenger side when my mate is driving.
sometimes when driving someone's slushbox, my left foot jumps to the invisible clutch lol
Hahaha my father calls that 'carpet breaking'😂 😂
I’ve been like that with my Sister behind the wheel in rush hour traffic. Went to a Sci-Fi/comic book convention with my sister, her now husband, and one of their co-workers. Vatanen and Vatanen.. The best racing twin.
Good! Ari deserves that after scaring so many co-drivers.
PizzaChet 😂😂😂

don't forget he drove in the 80s when the monster group b cars put out 500bhp
500bhp yes, but slower than modern 300bhp cars with infinitely better gearboxes, brakes and suspension.
Matt, probably depends on the stage. If you would put modern tires on a group B Peugeot or Audi I think the Group B car can beat the current generation of WRC Cars

well yes, its even better if that legend is your father.
well done
Dude Ari is a fucking Group B driver. He has massive balls he could be rallying a dragster and remain calm
If it weren't for the world going bye so fast you would think they were going to the grocerystore.
What do you mean? Clearly Mom needed some milk.
No worried looks there....all I saw was the yoda of rallying riding with his young apprentice and having great pride the youngster is more than capable

hahaha,dad was really enjoying ride..
This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen! Bunta finally saying Takumi is the fastest. 🤯
Like father, like son. Well done Max!
Great ari vatanen.... my idol... come visit my island and our rally in the erc cup. Thank you for everything kiitos
No fear for Ari Vatanen.. He is one of the greatest WRC drivers.
I'm of the opinion , that Ari would still scare the pants off Max .... I see a proud Dad , and ONE of the BEST rally drivers , in his time, the world has ever seen. !!!!

Did he have a "oh dear God" moment? Remember the first time me an my dad rode bikes together after I had some practice on my own;-D

Ari’s face is like. Hurry up, we’re gonna miss dinner! lol
I don't know either of them but if the father looked uncomfortable it was maybe because of pain in his body, from age? Just an observation, don't know them.
Spitting image of early 80s Ari in a helmet. No surprises but sweet
I see Max almost disappointed when Ari focuses on the cameras, totally ignoring his son.
Ari Vatanen has no use for a racing suit....this is not Group B! Legendary!
