Jackson Browne was part of a large group of musicians, singers, and songwriters that settled in LA in the late 60's and 70's, mostly in and around Laurel Canyon. They worked with each other, sang each other's songs, and generally supported each other. Browne, JD Souther, Linda Ronstadt, various members of the Eagles, all of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Joni Mitchell, Karla Bonoff, EmmyLou Harris, Gram Parsons and other members of the Flying Burrito Brothers. The Troubador and the Whisky a Go-Go were the clubs they generally hung out at and you never knew who would be on stage (and who would be backing them). It was a very fruitful time and gave us so much great music in the 70's.

Looking back, i think the 79s was the best decade for all genres: folk, rock, southern rock, pop, funk, r&b & disco. Never a shortage of great bands, & singer songwriter’s.

@@zevkeisch4453 What made it unique (for those of us who lived it) was that all genre's played on the radio. Radio wasn't corporatized like it is now and each station had more freedom to play whatever they wanted. Yes. there were stations that were for country or R&B (or my favorite: AOR) but even they weren't locked in as much as they are now.

Rosemary Butler was the singer who belted out the second chorus of 'Stay.' She was a back-up singer for Jackson Browne during this period. She's also sung with Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Neil Young, and Rosanne Cash.
The Guy who did the final falsetto verse was the late David Lindley, master of all stringed instruments. He also was the one playing the lap steel guitar. Brilliant musician, great career. He had a big hit in the 90's with Mercury Blues, performed with his band El Rayo X. He sadly passed away just 10 months ago now. RIP
The only other thing I have to say is, listen to the other folks here and do more Jackson Browne. You can't go wrong.

"Why can't we get shit like this now?" Good question! Greetings from Germany! I was a fourteen year old boy when I got in touch with Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon, Arlyn Gale, Gil Scott Heron and all the others in 1977/78. They taught me their language and gave me a glimpse of how it was to live in the U.S.A. at those times. I've seen about a hundred concerts during my younger days and I appreciate that Jackson is honoring his roadies. He's was and is one of the best! Now I'm a boring old fart and wonder why you can't find artists like that anymore.
You're reaction is amazing. Thanx for that. You seem to be one of the rare people who seem to understand what he was singing about. I visited the U.S.A. in 79, 96, 98 and last year. I miss that spirit I once have expirienced... Sorry to say that...

Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.

I love this artist, he is a genius, talented in every aspect of music. This song is so great. He wrote The Load Out but not Stay, however they go together seamlessly and beautifully. Heartfelt gratitude here, you rarely hear that from musicians and certainly not musicians who have had the fame that Jackson has. Thank you for your great reaction. That is David Lindley and he is playing what is called a Lap Steel. He also plays Guitar and Fiddle. He was an awesome musician also.

Your reaction was the best I’ve seen of this particular Jackson Browne song. You understood right off what he was conveying to his audience. You can’t go wrong reacting to any of his songs. I’ve been a huge fan for over 50 years. He is without a doubt my favorite writer and singer from my generation.

This song is a time capsule, all the pop cultures of the time. The lyrics really paint a beautiful picture. Something i feel today's music is lacking.

The drummer here was one of the greatest (some say THE greatest) session drummer of all time..His name was Jim Gordon..He died only ten days after David Lindley (Lap Steel guy here) while in prison last year..He was incarcerated since 1983 for attacking and killing his mother with a hammer, and a butcher knife..He was a diagnosed Schizophrenic, and said voices in his head told him to kill her..He played on over 500 recordings, with just about everyone from his era..Sad, sad story.

This is why I've seen Jackson 17 times in concert. A talented and gifted singer/songwriter, an astute arranger and those smooth vocals.
Why don't they make music like that anymore?
They do, you just have to bypass all the crap being churned out nowadays and just start listening to artists you don't know, and listen and be patient. You'll find the good ones.
    Fantastic reaction!

You said it "Top tier" LOVE watching new people discover the greats from the past! And you loved it! I saw you dancing in your chair 😂 Jackson Brown is one of my favorites and still playing today!!! And still looking good! But, he has a sad story, his wife killed herself way back then.. it was hard on him and some of his music still reflects on it today ❤

I agree 100% that the music of today can never rival what was put out in the 60's, 70's and early 80's. I'm so glad I lived through those decades of great music and I'm glad to see you enjoying it.

"Why can't we get shit like this now?" THANK YOU. I ask myself this every day. They don't make music like this anymore. There's no talent like there was back then. NONE. All these women out on stage dancing around almost naked, lip syncing their songs? Crap. Absolute garbage.

I'm so grateful that I was a teenager in the 70's and was able to see him in concert. Not to mention so many other concerts that were at "The Day On The Green" in Oakland..Those were incredible times. Check out Day on the Green. It was a concert place in Oakland, Bill Graham presents. We'd go to 10 concerts a summer. Those were the days and I'm glad you are getting a chance to enjoy what we had back in the day......Thanks for the reactions. You really feel these songs, don't you? Love it!

Jackson closes is shows with this song. David Lindley the slide guitar player passed away. Lindley died after a long illness on March 3, 2023, at the age of 78. He had COVID-19 in 2020, which his family said developed into Long COVID, with chronic kidney damage. Jackson is still touring.

I played music when I was younger and played local clubs and had a great time. There was nothing like being on stage even in front of 100 or so people. I was decent. But these musicians whose names we will never know are so passionate and dedicated to their music. So many hours alone working so hard on their craft and then with others for the love of making music. I am so in awe of them. To play so good and not get the big money or fame. They play their hearts out so someone like Jackson Brown can get rich and famous. They do it for the music. Shout out to them.
