Really great review, definitely enjoyed it. Only thing I would disagree with is the recommendation of needing balanced to drive a certain headphone. Balanced just usually has a lot higher power, so it is generally better for power hungry headphones, but there are plenty of single ended designs with heaps of power. Like, say a, normal ass Class A or A/B amp. It would be great to see what you think of the Emotiva BasX A-100 with a jumper in it to give the headphones full power.
He needs to get a Clear and Arya so he has better reference points. I love me some Bryan and I'm glad he's getting into high end headphones, but he just doesn't have enough experience to make accurate conclusions yet. Thanks @Joshua Valour for introducing him to another hobby so I can get more unbiased reviews.
Something to note about the 800s if anyone here's looking at this video to buy it Consider the hifiman arya as an option as well, with something like a (schiit) asgard and modius stack Look at Headphone show reviews from resolve for more details if you are considering either
Love your review! I have a chance to get the HD8xx for $680. Will be listening to music mostly (not gaming) and I'm mostly using a Fiio M17 right now ("self-teaching" as well). I'm starting to look into DAC/amps, stacks, etc but haven't made a decision on those yet. Should I spend the cash?
Sorry if you already answered this but if you were using them strictly for gaming would you get the 8xx or the 800s? Also don’t want to hype them up anymore for you than others already have but really think you’re going to love the Aryas, just the right mixture of bass quality, soundstage, and detail.
It's about time. I've used my HD800s for a good couple years now gaming and audio and it is just superb. The bass is lacking but made up for in sound stage.
U can use schiit loki or lokius to correct small issues with this pair or u can use a dac/amp with eq like monoprice thx aaa amp and dac or rme adi 2 dac if u r not comfortable with software base eq 👍 try it

Second most upvoted comment in Zeos (Z reviews), by gtb75 mentions that HD8xx has an entirerely new driver, bespoke to it. But that neither Drop nor Senn clarified in the FAQ who would warranty it if it breaks, like 5 years down the line, can I get a driver replacement or will out be out of production by then so SOL. It's 1100$ I sure hope so. So sitting this one out, especially with Sennheiser being bought by another company.

@@epicmike3915 I just grab a reply from someone else debating this on a forum, which seems to match what other reviews say. "As much as some 58x owners want to believe they've got 500$ HD6-series sound for 149$ that's actually not the case. The only thing jubiless have in common with 660S is similar tunning, but much worse detail retrieval and balance, drier vocals, narrower soundscape. They're like a baby version with all of the shortcomings, in terms of resolution and scalability they're at best on HD5-series level." As for my opinion, 660S are my daily cans, so much detail, clarity, and good imaging. But these are neutral sounding. If I want sub bass, I switch to my Closed DT 770 PRO's. If I want big sound stage and that V shape boosted Lows and Highs, I chuck the XH2R on. Everyone's ears are different, so just go with what works for you.
the audio philes would say that you shouldn't apply EQ to your music. You need a really good amp and speakers or headset to reproduce the music as intended by the artist.
I comes down to personal taste really. Should you have to EQ? No you shouldn't have to especially on higher end shit but there is a benefit to doing so especially if the headphones can do EQ well. I have the LCD-X and after EQ, they are absolutely phenomenal. I say if you can EQ to makes things better(and this is subjective), then do so.. I see it like overclocking a PC.. get that extra performance for free.. why not?
Came to the channel some months ago for the keyboards, just now discovering a whole trove of audio content I'm eager to learn more about! I haven't dived deep into the audio world at all yet, so I have no idea what good quality sounds like. I've daily driven the Outdoor Tech Privates for the past 10 years or so and they're finally giving out. If I'm looking for a wireless on-ear pair of headphones that have onboard controls and are nigh indestructible, would the Marshall Major IV be good? Mostly looking for an audiophile's perspective on what a "decent enough" consumer headphone would be.
If you’d like to do a shoot-out between the Arya, 8xx, Elex, and LCD-X, there’s exactly one more headphone ya gotta get in there, the ZMF Auteur - my favorite in that price bracket.
HD800 + EQ (ie Schiit Loki) = God mode Yes, you can fix every issue with analog EQ. You can make it a bass head headphone. The drivers can do it all, just gotta fix the signal.
I tested the Equalize settings for my HD800s to sound like the HD8xx, and well, it did sound bad in my ears compared w/o Equalizer. Sound feel muffeled, as if you were hearing the sound from behind a thin wall or something like that. Sounds so bad I'm starting to think I set it up wrong, even I double checked. Maybe it's because I'm too used to the HD 800s now.
am i able to just plug and play with these or do i need extra equipment just to get them to work? like for example if wanted to not use them in a studio setting and i wanted to use them to game do i still need an interface for them to work or can i just plug them up like regular headphones?
I still really like them but I always seem to go back to the DT 1990. I honestly got tired of (first world problem) having too many different headphones at my desk for different purposes so no I generally keep the DT 1990 and a single other rotating choice.
@@badseedtech I see, I was worried about the supposed harsh high end with the DT 1990 which made me lean towards the Aeons. Was just wondering thanks for the reply!

Oh wow......I was looking into the 6xx finally....these are exciting. How are the Hifiman 400Se stack up with these..just ordered them...hoping good decision.
I'm a little confused on your conclusion here. Video was awesome (as usual), but it feels like you spent a lot of time talking about the 800s and just briefly touched on the 8xx sound wise. Are they better in your opinion? How big is the difference with the 800s? And most importantly are they really worth $1100, or are there cheaper options that come close in performance?
That’s the whole idea of the video, the only difference from the 800 S is the tuning. They’re not better - they’re different. Only mildly so, but in a way that will be more accessible to a wider range of people but also really piss off the people who love the 800 S. I can’t think of anything that does specifically what the 8XX does. If it exists, I haven’t heard it yet. But I can’t tell you if they’re worth it for you.
@@badseedtech just the answer I was looking for, thanks! Always interested in the 800s but the price and reports of it being bright always turned me off. Much more interested in a warmer version as this appears to be. Only have a solid state amp though...
@@lockjaw333 If you do end up going with a tube, don’t go w a hybdrid tube. I would heavily recommend getting an authentic tube amp because a lot of the lower end/medium tube hybrids barely sound any different from SS amps. I’ve only tried the Loxjie p20 in terms of hybrids, but when I looked at others reviewing the same amp or other hybrids they had the same conclusion. Not that they sound bad by any means, but they’re just not what we would’ve expected sound wise. I was chasing the warm tube sound people talk about but was turned off by the price and size of the tube amps and paid the price. Basically, just get an authentic tube amp and not a hybrid if you can afford and are willing to put up with the size.
I'm on the ropes about this. I got the 2021 LCD-X and I EQ them using Oratory1990's newest profile(slightly modified for my own preference) and they are an absolute banger of a headphone. The LCD-X is fantastic at imaging and the soundstage is pretty damn good but I keep hearing about how the HD 800s is just next level for sound stage.. always been curious about experiencing these just don't know if that is enough to persuade me to spend the money.. I do also have the Focal Clear MG Pros and they are fantastic even for gaming.. just that sound stage I keep hearing about with the Senns.

I’ve been waiting for this review from you. B roll is epic as always. Got a question: Will you consider taking look at the Hifiman Anandas?
Really great review, definitely enjoyed it. Only thing I would disagree with is the recommendation of needing balanced to drive a certain headphone. Balanced just usually has a lot higher power, so it is generally better for power hungry headphones, but there are plenty of single ended designs with heaps of power. Like, say a, normal ass Class A or A/B amp. It would be great to see what you think of the Emotiva BasX A-100 with a jumper in it to give the headphones full power.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the Focal Clear MG. Soundstage isn't there but everything else you describe is.
Really nice video that isnt bloated with audiophile terms that I half understand lol. Please do an Elex review! I'm so interested in them
Excellent review!!!
Something to note about the 800s if anyone here's looking at this video to buy it
Consider the hifiman arya as an option as well, with something like a (schiit) asgard and modius stack
Look at Headphone show reviews from resolve for more details if you are considering either
Still can't understand what Sennheiser was trying to do with the hd 700, 800, 800s, and 820? I'm sure they have the use cases but why?
Sorry if you already answered this but if you were using them strictly for gaming would you get the 8xx or the 800s?
Also don’t want to hype them up anymore for you than others already have but really think you’re going to love the Aryas, just the right mixture of bass quality, soundstage, and detail.
It's about time. I've used my HD800s for a good couple years now gaming and audio and it is just superb. The bass is lacking but made up for in sound stage.
U can use schiit loki or lokius to correct small issues with this pair or u can use a dac/amp with eq like monoprice thx aaa amp and dac or rme adi 2 dac if u r not comfortable with software base eq 👍 try it
I'd love to hear a pair of high end headphones. Living vicariously through you, thanks.
Great Review Kratos!
I just bought a Stellia. This video doesn't scare me. But it was a good watch ✌️
Big bank energy 💪🏼
You're so passionate. Subscribed!
Damn, haven't watched the video but the comments say it all. Drop has been dropping the ball lately.
Have you tried ATH R70x? It’s really light and comfy, with great detail
I really hope you get and do an Arya comparison. LCD X, with HD8xx comparisons vs Arya is EXACTLY what I am looking for.
awesome description of HD800s
6:50 wow, what a shot!
Fantastic review! May keep my eyes out for a used 8xx in the future.. selfishly I’m looking forward to your Elex review, and I’d be interested in your thoughts on the ether CX someday.
Just go with the 800S
Got both, Elex is better imo
4:17 to 4:23 thank you Mr. P, that clip will be used for memes.
Fire away 😅😅
Already bought one, cant wait till it arrives. I just need to find a good tube amp to go with it.
Very interesting
@@badseedtech It's a month old comment, someone replied that Drop's CPO stated Sennheisser will service them in their USA centers but will have to find some binding info on paper before being reassured.
Awesome video this is definitely out of my price range but I still enjoyed the video keep up the great work.I also am wondering if you have any interest in checking out the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 gen 2 with two different type of Dekoni pads I would like to send them to you to see what you think if you have any interest
With a pair of HD 660S, DT 770 PRO 80ohms, and X2HR with V-Moda. I've reached my endgame.
Not going to bite...
I would say you are good. I had the HD800S and ended up selling them and kept my HD660S. Somehow they are more engaging.
Still curious about the 660s but if is anything like the 58x I won't love them.
They're like a baby version with all of the shortcomings, in terms of resolution and scalability they're at best on HD5-series level."
As for my opinion, 660S are my daily cans, so much detail, clarity, and good imaging. But these are neutral sounding.
If I want sub bass, I switch to my Closed DT 770 PRO's.
If I want big sound stage and that V shape boosted Lows and Highs, I chuck the XH2R on.
Everyone's ears are different, so just go with what works for you.
@@tgpips1128 Thanks for the detailed response. That's exactly what I was looking for lol. Yeah neutral is probably not for me.
@@epicmike3915 I also had the 58x. Different drivers, different sound. The 660s is more refined (and more expensive)
the audio philes would say that you shouldn't apply EQ to your music.
I see it like overclocking a PC.. get that extra performance for free.. why not?
I think you’ll really like the Elex. It’s the best sounding headphone I have, but unfortunately the headband and pads aren’t comfortable on my melon.
Define beefy tube amp, I have a dark voice with aftermarket tubes
Came to the channel some months ago for the keyboards, just now discovering a whole trove of audio content I'm eager to learn more about!
I haven't dived deep into the audio world at all yet, so I have no idea what good quality sounds like. I've daily driven the Outdoor Tech Privates for the past 10 years or so and they're finally giving out. If I'm looking for a wireless on-ear pair of headphones that have onboard controls and are nigh indestructible, would the Marshall Major IV be good? Mostly looking for an audiophile's perspective on what a "decent enough" consumer headphone would be.
what amp and dac are you using for this headphone? I saw you playing black ops call of duty. Can you please tell me which one you are using? thank you
Great vids keep it up and will u review the d wireless
Thanks, and yes - I will.
@@badseedtech lesssss goooi
If you’d like to do a shoot-out between the Arya, 8xx, Elex, and LCD-X, there’s exactly one more headphone ya gotta get in there, the ZMF Auteur - my favorite in that price bracket.
You're missing the Clear and Aeolus.
HD800 + EQ (ie Schiit Loki) = God mode
Yes, you can fix every issue with analog EQ. You can make it a bass head headphone. The drivers can do it all, just gotta fix the signal.
Or you know.. spend the money on bass head cans instead, no headphone can 'do it all'.
@@Lemonpinesolwhat a waste
Josh got you! You are down the hole now! I am looking forward to your take on the Arya
man i owned lcd-x twice sold it because of the weight, so i purchased the HD8xx will probably get the WA7 Gen 3 to pair with.
Love the review, do you still use your Aeon X Opens? Has your opinion changed on them?
I still really like them but I always seem to go back to the DT 1990. I honestly got tired of (first world problem) having too many different headphones at my desk for different purposes so no I generally keep the DT 1990 and a single other rotating choice.
@@badseedtech I see, I was worried about the supposed harsh high end with the DT 1990 which made me lean towards the Aeons. Was just wondering thanks for the reply!
Long time fan! Curious did you ever end up buying the 8xx?
Actually picked up the 800s instead lol
@@badseedtech thanks for the reply man. Gah I can stomach the price tag for the 8xx, but the 800s is tough! Debating if I wanna try EQing the 8xx cuz I'd be ok with that.
@@badseedtech what dac / amp setup are you running the 800s on?
You should try out some higher end closed backs, like TH900, Denon AH-D9200 or Sony Z1R! I sold my Focal Clear and 800S for the Denons and have zero regrets, but barely any RUclipsr has reviewed them, definitely need some love!
Love my ZR1 as well, it’s the most “alive” headphone I own, you feel like you’re right there at a concert.
I gotta disagree brian. Im with crinacle on these
No worries here, my man. That’s the beauty part of a very subjective hobby.
Same. Crinacle is definitely the side I'm on with this instance. DMS and metal571 are also of the opinion that these are just fucking terrible lol.
Can u pls make a video on schiit lokius which has 6 band for eq control, there is not many good videos about it in youtube, and u can compare it with loki
What do you say about DEKONI Earpads ?
Oh wow......I was looking into the 6xx finally....these are exciting. How are the Hifiman 400Se stack up with these..just ordered them...hoping good decision.
400se is great for the price. Be happy with your decision.
If they had Affirm I would buy them. Not willing to spend 1100 on lisure stuff atm.
will you ever review the focal clear mg? :)
I should just buy speakers and tape them to my ears at this point...
Dekoni earpads definitely fix the low end
@@lockjaw333 the 8xx has literally no upper mids, it apparently isnt very nice to listen to
Me: clicks on video. Hears big money. Clicks link.
Also me: Oooof.
The H8xx has similar meme potential as the HD820 xD
I would not buy anything at this price tier without being able to audit them first.
Edit: I’m also gonna check out that EQ bc I love the LCD-X.
@@badseedtech yeah you're absolutely right. Maybe one day I'll get a chance to try the 800s at a local store. I'll stick to what I got for now honestly, I don't really need anything else... this hobby though is addictive.
Pls try schiit lokius the bigger brother of schiit loki that u reviewed it would be great with hd800/8xx
Make sure to wait for the new revision Arya, with stealth magnets.
Stealth magnets?
@@evshrug same tech as on the he 1000 and susvara, one side of the magnet structure is tapered to better direct and tune the sound.
How do you eq your headphones?
With Peace APO
Sennheiser and no clamp? Never thought I would see it.
Not sure about this new 8XX sound sig. Should be interesting. I have the HD 800s and EQ it with a Schiit Lokius EQ to add some low end Bass and it's fantastic.
Then stay RIGHT there. The 8XX will only disappoint you lol “look how they massacred my boy”
@@badseedtech For Justice we must go to Don Vito Corleone!!
Joshua valour recommends a leather ear pad for 8xx which makes them more comfortable and make them sound better but it cost 100$ pls try it
Sadly, they weren’t mine to keep. It was a tour unit that I’ve sent on to the next reviewer.
Does anyone have any thoughts on these for audio work? I use RME Babyface Pro interface with no other amp situation. The HD800S are phenomenal for mixing in my experience; wondering if anyone has used the HD8XX for the same?
Already know I can't afford it. I'm just here for the top quality vi.. beard.
Recommended amp/dac for this particular headphone
Any dac and any strong tube amp would fit the bill. Not a fan of them on solid state amps.
@@badseedtech I just checked now Joshua valour paired 800s with monoprice thx aaa amp/dac solid state as it has an eq option which corrects most of the flaws with 8xx/800s , i am not into tubes that's why

How’d the 8XX hold up when gaming?
Just go with the HD800S
we no longer go Sicko Mode, we go DUMBO MODE!
wallet? what headphones? i came for the beard!
Me: Deciding between a 58x or 660S, hmm 660S is pricey though
BadSeed: 800 S vs 8xx
Me: Ow interesting...
Wallet: No, it's not interesting.
58X. If you haven’t spent a lot of time with high end headphones you will not be able to tell the difference between the two.
660S was a let down tbh , very dark and veiled once you go beyond it , it really shows
Oh, thanks for the replies...I haven't spent anytime what so ever, only gaming headsets...I want it mainly (95%) for single player games...but thank you both for the advice ♥ I may have been falling victim to "its over double the price, it must be better"
HD58X and remove the foam grill inserts. like @Le Sam said they sound nearly identical already, supposedly this "mod" makes them even closer.
