When I was decommissioning a gold mine up in northern Canada in 2007, I noticed that the old mechanical building had a 7-cylinder version of one of these for use as a generator. It had not been run for decades but had a turbo-charger, was inter-cooled and had four OHV per cylinder. Very impressive and while I was there, I always wondered what it would sound like.

It's possible, but not sure. The generator could be different for this one. For the modern generators, they can spin without being on load. The excitation current can be switched off, and then the generator will freewheel without making significant power.

If the injection timing is set correctly, they run cleanly. But it looks much more impressive belching smoke and fire.

One of these engines was used to light the Auteuil race course. The engine still exists; whether it is still being used to generate power, I don't know.

It needs a injector pump adjustment, its missing badly folks. Good way to cook expensive parts.

Diesels don't use spark plugs, R-tard, they use glow plugs, and high compression to ignite fuel. Educate yourself.

+Beosaw Internet says it is an inline 9, 330 liter turbocharger with 1600HP. And it also drinks 350 liters of diesel in one hour... that's quite a bit O_O

Nine cylinders, so this will have nine crank throws spaced at 40° apart for an even firing order or does it get wierd?

I'm no expert on this particular engine make and model, but I don't think it's running correctly lol. I'd be worried about soot buildup in the turbo

I have a sneaking suspicion this engine does not get any work and is starting to gum up.
of course, there's nothing coupled to the flywheel, and only few injections are made(when the smoke appares)
they often seize or throw con rods like u say, if a large engine runs away and u have no way to safely plug inlet etc; RUN!
The rods parts come out like bullets, big ones, people have been killed by them and u get explosions in crank case sometimes!
Needs a tune up!
