I always thought the resurgence of tape was a bit of a novelty after being brought up on tapes and getting so frustrated by them. However, I do kinda get it now. They have a warmth and old school charm that you can’t really get with any other medium. Maybe when Roland release a new 404 it will have “tape sim?” Lol
I’ve wanted a working tape deck for years - pretty much since I started making beats as I knew it could add a lot of character - wasn’t wrong judging from this! There’s definitely something nice about hitting those heavy buttons. And yes haha that should definitely be an addition haha
@@spvidz i don't mean to be that guy, but if you're interested in like lofi tape ambient stuff check out Slumber Assistant by B. C. Slumber (aka. myself haha) i just try to get warm tones and cassette tape really helps get me there. :)
been thinking about this for a while sadly space is a limiting factor atm so having a massive tape deck isn't a priority :( diggin' the physical workaround for the tape deck, I've got a load of janky old electronics that have funny workarounds. Gives them character for sure.
That’s a shame man, I’m sure you can get something a bit smaller - check out the Sony TCM 939 - I was going to get one of these until I got mine working as it looks like it’s got a line in
@@miseryloveseverything had a look at this one on eBay and it has mic but yeah I know what you mean. I question if it’s the standard jack size and not some random old input size and it might not work with just a standard phono to jack cable
Great video man! Fun to see how you battle these minor setbacks. The sound that cassettes give have really grown on me these last few years. I'm in the process of getting my own tape deck, and if everything goes according to plan I'm gonna start putting out beat tapes soon.
Grew up with 8 track tapes, vinyl records, as tape. When CDs and digital recordings became a thing it was so much better than listening to music with air sound and tape hiss especially home recorded music. Now everybody wants the degraded signal and sound. 🤷
I actually need to put my cassette recorder to use too! Will it change the sound more if you overload the signal into the cassette recorder? Do you need specific tapes or will any blanks do? Cool vid again, and a reason to experiment more :)
I had to record this video several times so might have forgot to mention in the final edit but yes I would try driving a 'hot' signal into it to see what effect you can get. It certainly added a bit more character to mine. Originally I was peaking mine at 0db but found +3 had a nice vibe to it! All about experimenting! I just used a low noise type 1 tape - i've been told they are best for getting that dirty tape sound!
The sound you're looking for is generation loss thats when u copy from one tape to another and u loss quality it can be done on both cassette and vhs tapes i seen people make lofi vhs tape by doing that @spvidz
Careful touching that rubber belt too much, the grease / oils on our hands can cause the belts to dissolve, normally it takes years but with older machines it’s normally already quite degraded and will happen quicker.
@@spvidz I think that’s wise, it’s probably all overly precautious, but it looks like a really nice deck, and they’re getting harder to find in working conditions these days, so better safe than sorry.
you really have no idea how to work that machine ---- get the book - you press PAUSE and then RECORD - puts you in record pause, then PAUSE again to start tape.... then either PAUSE or STOP.... That is why the record button won't lock and light. Also the record lockout tab must be intact on your cassette - also the mic inputs are for DYNAMIC mics only - you need a mixer with power to use phantom mics
Nice man, I need to start hunting around for them again, kinda stopped looking and got more into vinyl but I've found the most random dope stuff on tape!
Love the breakdown brother! So lofi that you actually have to manually trigger the record, love it haha. Defo hear the tape effect!
haha definitely man, 100% ghetto vibes but I kinda prefer that over some crazy clean studio! Thanks for watching

Nice mate, yeah can’t wait to knock out a new EP and run it through this. Now I just have to hope nothing else breaks 🤣
Smooth beat. I still listening to tapes as well.
Thanks a lot! Yeah I will definitely be on the hunt for more now I've got this (kinda) working :)
Cassette tape has been my secret sauce for years. Such an integral part of my workflow.
Nice man! Yup just earned it’s place in mine permanently as well now!

Yo man thanks for watching! Sounds like a good plan, I'd highly recommend getting one. Good luck with the tapes!
interesting stuff!
I'm looking forward to your patten seq vids, man. ✌️
Nice one man, yeah i'll get some content out in the next couple of weeks for sure!

It's a beautiful struggle to say the least
lol definitely man, worth it in the end though :)
Get a cheap tape recorder from argos that's the best way to get that sound we are looking for
They only have one and I'm not sure on the inputs but yeah you're right. The decks are almost too good quality for what us lofi heads want!
