  • The last mass evacuation was nearly 20 years ago when Hurricane Rita threatened the Texas coast. Almost 2 million people were packed in a massive traffic jam that turned deadly. What's changed since then?

No. Texas needs to be ready to take freeways both directions North. Storm surge is worse than wind. However days and days and days of no electricity! No insulin for diabetics or oxygen for COPD patients. Both way freeway traffic North

Do the smart thing and head west instead. Go far away enough to get out of the storm's path, because everyone else will be heading north towards Dallas.

I remember Rita well, we could not get out of the City of Plum Grove for days before Rita because of all the evacuation traffic from the Crosby to Beaumont areas coming up Plum Grove Road (aka FM1010). For the past 7 years now though, that roadway has been washed-out from the Colony Ridge drainage system and there is no estimate on when that road will ever be repaired... State Representative Ernest Bailes has even been recorded as saying that "they" (?) don't want the Plum Grove Road washout to ever be repaired! Yet no news reporters aside from Wayne Dolcefino have been out here to visit the washout and talk about it.... why? Wouldn't you think that a main roadway that's a hurricane evacuation route that's been washed out for 7 years would be news worthy???

I remember the Rita evacuation like it only yesterday. I remember only making it to Livingston trying to get to the Dallas area, then just said forget this madness and headed east towards Warren. The heat on the road was unbearable, no gas, no food, NOTHING! When we got to Warren, the hurricane came right through our area while Houston was untouched! I SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME! When we got back home, I had a few days off from school because they were all still closed. Long after it was all over, I do remember having many nightmares about the experience including one weird one where everyone was trying to get out of town because aliens from outer space were invading! Never evacuated for a hurricane since!!

Harvey was hell, too. I pray Houston's given a pass from hurricanes this year after the recent tornado and hurricane Beryl. both we're still recovering from. 3 weeks with no electricity is dangerous and my Dad, 95, worries me. He's brave but there's only so much anyone can take. We do have a small generator but it's not large so we have a fan and refrigerators running. We've lost trees and our fence is still down. Will be doing a great deal of praying this next 6 weeks.

I'm in Arkansas and I'm seeing a lot of new Texas plates. To me this is a crisis. Many people are selfish and drive that way. I don't have a vehicle so I know the psychological impact between being in a closed up vehicle and being on foot. It's a strange way of being. So with selfish people leaving Texas seeking life in Arkansas there may be more vehicular hit and run incidents. Thanks for the warning.

Hopefully, they will reverse the opposite side of the highway, which had only a few Vehicles going towards the storm, further up the road, perhaps as it exits the city, doubling parking capacity. Every gas station along the Route needs backup generation and large subsidized storage tanks as part of the funding package, something to consider that is essential to keep unprepared motorists moving.
