    Great video. I saw this, bought the bits and pieces and went carp fishing for my first time. Made two rigs, had two takes and two caught. Everything worked and was especially pleased that the knots were good too. I don't even have a carp rod, had to use a match rod with great patience! Great video, well presented and all great advice.

    • @louislunterbusch5571
      @louislunterbusch5571 3 года назад +1

      @@SimonDewCarpFishing soft coated hook-links are not that stiff that a carp is not able to pick the bait up in my opinion. The break will help it twist and turn in the carps mouth but it will also make it easier for the carp to spit the whole thing out. Is it because of or despite of you caught the carp? That’s always the question which nobody can answer. I fished with thick amnesia in the past and even that produced lots of carp for me. So many variables in fishing. From which direction does the carp approach the hook bait, Is your hook link straight or not for instance. Coming from the wrong direction it might not be able to pick it up because the hook link is straightened out. Coming from the right direction the carp might hook itself but only if the hook link pulls tight against the lead before the carp can spit it out because it detected something it didn’t like. A carp is a carp but not all carp do feed in the same way. That’s why some get caught very often and some very rare. If you had the opportunity to pre bait and the carp have eaten plenty of your bait without getting hooked it will probably pick your hook bait up with much more confidence than when it has never eaten it before. Nearly any rig will catch in that situation I guess.
      I really do like your videos especially the one comparing pop-up rigs. It showed that it doesn’t matter what rig you use as long as it is in the right spot it will catch you carp. It’s all about confidence in my opinion. Far to long this answer 😂.
      Keep on testing and sharing the results mate👍.

    I had never heard of a German rig till this video appeared on my RUclips homepage. Thing is, I watched you making your version and all the way through I kept thinking “he’s making my version of the Ronnie rig for wafters minus the quick release swivel!”. You then mention the turbo German rig, so I googled it and it’s my version of the Ronnie rig for wafters! I’ve been using this for ages now, the Ronnie is without doubt the best rig for hook placement and a stiff rig for me is essential if you’re not using PVA bags to kick your link away from the weight & leader. Only difference is I don’t use coated braid, I use the Korda Boom stiff link, I find a florocarbon is less visible and crimp it rather than tie it as the crimp hook end is perfect for holding putty in place and stops it sliding down the hook length like it can do on braid when it gets wet.

    • @SPS_survivor
      @SPS_survivor 2 года назад +1

      Stiff fluoro booms are all well and good if the lake bad is flat with no snags at all but as soon as there’s even a broken twig you run the risk of having a poorly presented rig and you’re not fishing. Keep it simple with a KD - gets um every time 😉

    • @reluctantsocialist2670
      @reluctantsocialist2670 2 года назад

      @@SPS_survivor I know what you mean, one day ticket I fish has a ton of trees overhanging about 75% of the lake and the lake bed is a mess of branches so my stiff Ronnie just doesn't work, although getting wrapped up in those branches by fish late at night/early morning is more of a problem for me there, not being able to see the snags until you're pulled in them keeps my visits to a minimum.

    Hi Simon
    Iv been using this type of rig for a long time and thought I should be catching more. I now strip the coating off the hook link and tie the knot less knot on the hook and leave approx 5mm of soft braid from the eye of the hook. I wanted to keep the semi stiff hook link so I simply apply 1.0mm dia silicone over the eye and cover the soft section. This allows full rotation of the hook. It’s now the only rig I use for gravel, silt with bottom baits or wafters. My catch rate has gone up tenfold. 👍Dan

The rig was always used with soft coated braid to make it more cumbersome for the larger carp to deal with, also the putty was strategic in its placement to create the flip and turn effect. The late great Ian macmillan showed this to great effect. The idea with the break in the stiffer material is a nice idea but the putty could be closer.. top angling si

      Having a semi buoyant bait near the bend of the hook means it's a lot harder for the hook to turn down and hook the bottom lip. I'm not saying it doesn't work but it's all about percentages. If you can have the hook pointing down to start with then it's already in the right position when it's blown out. The blowback effect relies on the bait being blown back to the eye which it can with my version of the rig 🤷🏻‍♂️

    What an absolute load of rubbish! - the rig you've tied is not a German rig. Carp do not pick-up the bait as you do in your fingers - watch a carp feeding and how the German rig works, I'm sure you'll scrap your version in favour of the original version you showed. I've caught thousands of carp to 63lb on the original German and every hook hold has been perfect with no missed or aborted takes.

    • @SimonDewCarpFishing
      @SimonDewCarpFishing  3 года назад +7

      You're entitled to your opinion and as stated in the video I know the German rig works but in my opinion this version is better. You say no missed takes well you wouldn't know that unless watching the carp feeding underwater. Even the best rig in the world will have missed takes occasionally. Carp don't always move the lead and register on the alarm when they pick up a bait. I'm just trying to show you can tweak rigs to make them more effective and increase the percentages in your favour. For you to say it's absolutely rubbish is a little over the top 🤷🏻‍♂️
