How about leaving the yarn at the back on top of the right needle, going in same as you did and then pull the yarn through front to back . Comes out the same and saves the step of wrapping the yarn around the needle, so it would be faster.

Give it a go and see how you like the look. It may work. I prefer to work it this way. Probably habitual. :)
