    We all fell in love with Tristan. He was wild, reckless, and untamed. He represented that part of us that longs to be free and follow our hearts and our passion. I often wonder, how many baby boys born in the time of this movie, were named, “Tristan”?

      I actually never liked him particularly. He was lawless and "exciting" - typical bad boy. Train wreck for everybody. Thanks to their oldest brother at the end, they have some form of happy-ending. Romanticizing such type of reckless excitement is wrong and led us to where we are now - declining society with many single mothers fall for the same "Tristan" over and over again.

    Having watched this film several times my perspective have changed regarding the alleged love triangle between Susanna, Tristan & Alfred. I think that Tristan cared about Susanna primarily because she was Samuel's fiancé however I don't think that Tristan ever loved her. I believe the entire time Alfred was jealous that Susanna & Tristan were attracted to each other & that they got physical sooner rather than later. I think that Susanna was greatly infatuated with Tristan not in love considering that he was a man unlike anything she'd ever met. I also think that Susanna was never in love with Samuel but did care about him. I think she was only engaged to him because he would've made a suitable spouse. Mind you back in those days it was still very rare for people to marry for love. Marriages of financial convenience was the norm in those days.

    • @machete777-l9g
      @machete777-l9g 3 года назад +9

      I agree. She married Alfred for the same reason and the fact she had nowhere else to go. She had no family left, probably no money, Alfred was the obvious choice.

    • @iluvlafferty
      @iluvlafferty 2 года назад +8

      Let's agree to disagree. I've watched the movie many times and I think it's made clear that all 3 brothers were in love with Susannah. They just have different personalities / priorities meaning they treated her very differently. Her heart and interest was clearly with Tristan the whole time, even when he gets married. The movie as a whole centralizes Tristan & Susannah as the tragic lovers.

    • @laurendiehl2216

      Infatuation passes in like 6 months. She spent the rest of her life in love with him. He loved her but was too damaged to be what she needed. They are a tragic love story about soulmates who can never find the right time to be together.

    • @JMac7395
      @JMac7395 Год назад +2

      @@laurendiehl2216 that is grossly incorrect. Infatuation can last for years especially if the person accepts their fantasy over reality. For example; Susanna ignored Tristan's grief. There were moments were Tristan starred off into a daze & Susanna would keep rambling about their future ignoring his behavior. Susanna woke up to find Tristan bloody holding knife to her neck. She ignored that big red flag too. Tristan was also having random fits of rage on & off the property. Everyone acknowledged that something was wrong with Tristan except Susanna. Susanna refused to acknowledge the man Tristan had become because she was too infatuated with the man he used to be. Due to his trauma & grief Tristan had in fact changed forever. When Susanna finally accepted reality instead of her infatuated fantasy, she took her own life because she couldn't handle it.

    • @laurendiehl2216
      @laurendiehl2216 Год назад +1

      @@JMac7395 Thats your opinion I disagree. Susannah took her life when she realized that their opportunity had passed that it was never going to happen. She knew something was wrong with him and she did try to ignore it as people in love often to when their loved one is processing their trauma in destructive ways. She let him go, she didn't try to stop him from doing what he thought was best for himself. I think we interpret it differently but then I read the book so I have a different take on it that influences my opinion of the film.

    They ruined the film
    1)"time goes by and we feel safe too soon."This shows two things. a) He is basically stating that Tristan jumped into thinking he was "HAPPY".
    He is saying that Tristan is actively SEEKING a false, peaceful happiness, unlike the tumultuous love for Susannah, that will not tax his nerves. Everyone wants that but it is seldom obtainable!
    Tristan had MISSED his one chance at happiness with Susannah, and in seeking it with Isabel Two, had found only a small part of it, that was ultimately false, not the REAL LOVE of his life, but rather, someone comfortable to him and approved of by his relatives.
    2) He had ptsd and knew that he would not be the same unless he found some clarity in life. When he wrote the letter to Susannah, I believe it was out of love. He knew he was not in the right state of mind and didn't think he would return home and if he did, he know that he, at least in that state, couldn't make her happy the way she deserved. The note was written to free her, so she could officially be happy, which I believe he did out of selflessness only coming from true love, not because he truly let her go. This is proven when Tristan returns the second time with obvious intentions of marrying her because now in sane mind, he believed they would be able to be together.
    He even goes to speak with her, not his brother and when he sees her in the garden, you can see it in his face how much he still loves her and even more so as he explains to her the reasoning behind sending her the bracelet while persuading her to keep it. I believe he married Isabelle two because he was lonely and while he cared very deeply for her, I don't feel his love for her was the same as that for Susannah.I believed he still loved her despite knowing they would never be together. When he receives the news she has passed, you can tell beyond doubt he loved her and that it broke his heart
    Putting another's happiness above your own is true love in its purest form.
    3)His relationship with isabel seemed very platonic and even alfred sees how they are more like siblings. There is no passion there. Tristan was never like he was before. And that was the aim too! They changed his character for the worse and he lost his wildness and passion for life.
    The tristan character overall was contradictory. I know many women married to a real tristan and he isn't like the movie made him to be. Nor are those men attracted to children lol. Isabel had issues and I found it wrong for the writers to have included her. This could still have been the tragedy they wanted but it sadly didn't flow.
    I suggest you watch a river runs through it. It is a great film and James's music would have fared better there.
    braveheart, titanic, notebook and last of the mohicans are all films which don't make a mockery of real love. Tragedies in some parts and loving in others. This movie had huge potential.

Everyone he came into contact with died. isabel is someone you should have hated. she was arrogant throughout the film and more in love with the idea of marriage and children.
      Susannah was much more complex. she had true love to give.
      Tristan and her tried to prove they were better off without each other when really they were meant to be together. it was like Romeo and Juliet but with a twist.

    True cowboys ride with feet out front, like a Harley, no matter what the gate. I rode with the last real cowboy. Butt never left the saddle!
    No one in movies rides correctly.
