    Been asked many times by parents on what to buy as a first guitar. My advice is not to buy a cheap “starter” guitar. First, they are difficult to play. Even at a cheap price, they don’t hold their value. If you buy your kid a really good quality guitar, then they will enjoy playing more (which is the point, right?) and odds increase that they will stick with it. Lastly, if they lose interest and don’t pursue playing, then you can always sell a very good guitar and come closer to getting your investment back. That’s my two cents.

    For me, fretboard profiles; there are two; flat or curved. For beginners; you might wanna have a flat fretboard profile for much easy playability. The second is (some guitar players don't care about this); it's called "neck dive". I found it annoying. Neck dive happens when your headstock is heavy that requires you to support the weight of your headstock, reducing your play speed and slowing down your learning progress. The third is what Marty mentioned, the action. Low action, much more playability.

  • @robinbebbington7063

    Good to see someone finally say straight up buy a steel string guitar. Another issue starting on classical guitar like I did was I couldn't use my thumb for fretting the low E string or muting due to the really wide neck. Only thing I liked was the smaller body compared to dreadnought. So when I ended up buying my Yamaha steel string I went for the concert body plus replaced the 12s for some 10s. Also put in a new bridge to lower the action considerably which is a must for new players just like you said Marty.

    • @Frequency432hz
      @Frequency432hz 6 лет назад

      i use my epiphone dove as a pass around guitar, the tone sounds pretty good and it stays in tune and the low price i don't mind if it gets dings and scratches, it took a bit to set it up for really good action (my neighbor did that and then i bought it off of him) as i needed a campfire type guitar for when im around a bunch of beer drinkers that all want to try to play a guitar, so, when i have people over like that, its the guitar i hand them when they ask,
      to add, i was really surprised at the quality, tone and play ability at the $300 price new, ($150 used) the electronics totally suck in it though!, they have the battery at a location that you have to take the strings off to get to the battery!, its like, wtf??? really??? put the battery where???? I mean, it is the most stupid place to put a battery!, no wonder the price of the Dove are so low, but it does work good as a strait acoustic patio, kitchen, campfire guitar without plugging in

  • @sanddab
    @sanddab 3 года назад +2

    For me, body size was the most important factor. If it feels comfortable in your arms, size wise, you're going to want to play it more often. I think too many beginners feel they need to buy a dreadnought size guitar which is pretty big and can be a little intimidating, as well as being bulky to hold. I played that size for years until one day I tried a 000 size, and the difference was huge. I've never gone back.

    it definitely helps to go shopping with someone that knows how to play already. A good friend of mine came with me to buy my first guitar 3 years ago, I was in the $350-500 range. Ended up buying a Norman B20 as my first guitar for $450. Wouldn't have bought that without my friend playing it and showing me the different actions of the guitars and what makes a guitar different to play from another. I still play this guitar daily and love every time I pick it up. Great guitar to learn on. I'm now looking to buy another acoustic in the $800-$1000 range.
    I'd like to thank you Marty for showing me from the beginning how to play. You've been my main source of education on how to play chords and songs these past few years. You're very good at explaining how to play and ways to improve at every aspect of the beginner phase. So thank you so much, cheers mate

    I bought a Harmony guitar in 1966 for $75. I had Kevin Ryan make a Signature Series Nightingale with Brazilian and Adirondack in 2009 for $21,000. I loved them both. And I’ve owned many guitars over the years. Currently my favorite acoustic guitar is my Collings OM1CA and I also always keep a Rainsong WS1000 in my car. Never have to worry about temperature or humidity and it sounds and plays great.

    I got mine for 50-60 euros and it has been very nice, when I first got her I didn't know how to tune and I ruined 2 cords, then I fixed them and I left the guitar in the storage for like 3 years and now I just started playing again yesterday(watching your first guitar lesson), I tuned the guitar and I am having a fun time, but I can't play yet cause my fingers are not used to it. If you are like me, an average person that got a guitar out of nowhere and wants to learn how to play, then you should look for a good guitar that you can play, don't find the very best you can it's the one thing I always did on things and they didn't turn out good for me.
    My guitar is shiny.

    Yet another video upload Marty, where do you get the energy...
    I purchased the Epiphone Dove Pro/the Epiphone EJ200 & the Yamaha F310, as my acoustics to practice on around about May this year..
    I must say for the money the Yamaha F310 at only £140, which came as a bundle of extras, it was a great value for money...
    Yes the Yamaha F310 is of the bigger size but its actually easy to play...
    It came with a Basic Learning Tutorial DVD/Spare Set Of Strings/Guitar Stand/Yamaha Carry Bag/Set of Plectrums/Old Style Strap & a Tuner...
    Now for £140 which will be used as a practice guitar that's great value for money, & as I said it was set up perfect but the guys from my local guitar store checked the intonation on it anyway & gave it a good look over...
    It's got great tone/the strings sit at perfect height so you aren't killing your fingers when you press down on them, honestly its a steal at that price for what your getting...
    Sometimes when guitars are given away as a bundle pack then theres a tendency to think theyll not be that great, well check out your local guitar store to see if they have one in stock & go in & give it a try...
    It's up to the individual what they go for but I hope the info on the Yamaha F310 Bundle Pack helps you out if your looking for your first inexpensive but reliable acoustic guitar...

    A very fair overview. The only thing I'd want to add is that it's very important to find an instrument with a properly-cut nut. As you say, most beginners will spend a lot of time in the region of the first four frets (position 1) and playing chords and licks with open strings. A badly-cut nut can make playing down there a nightmare of tough action and tuning and intonation problems. So many people are put off guitar by that.

Only time id use a gig bag is to cover a guitar i dont take often or play much and need put away. Highly reccomend investing in a hard case, doesnt have to be extravagent, and keep it in there when not in use

      @@nathanbruce1992 Super duper hard to go wrong with a Yamaha, regardless of price. The FS830 is a great start. If you can afford the $250, plus the cost to have it set up by a tech, you'll be in great shape.

    What’s your opinion of Alvarez? They make some of the best acoustics I’ve ever seen, heard or played, and in fact mine is an Alvarez, although it’s been bruised pretty bad, and even the neck was snapped at one point, it STILL sounds better than most guitars I’ve ever heard! It also has a lot more bass sound than most brands I’ve heard, which is great for a lower, heavier vocalist/player like myself.
    What’s your favorite brand/s?

    Hi Marty, I recently started playing the guitar and I'm looking to buy a good acoustic guitar... I have narrowed it down to the brand, Epiphone or Takamine. I just wanted your opinion on which brand is better. If there is an other brand you would recommend please let me know, thanks!!

    I just bought the Yamaha A3R for $800, but it looks like everyone on YT seems to say to go with one that cost around $200, now I kind of feel like I messed up. I do really like the sound of the A3R from what I've seen, though.

    Marty, or anyone for that matter. I need a recommendation for a quality new or used acoustic guitar. I’m looking for a price range of up to $500. I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years , but never played that much acoustic. I guess another question I have is: would, or has anyone ever bought an acoustic guitar online without being able to try it out? With this virus stuff going on there’s no place that’s open. At least not yet. Thanks y’all in advance!!
