Girl the way your cross your fingers always blows my mind, I’ve never seen anyone cross their fingers like that before haha. I’ve watched you for years and it still surprises me everytime I see it
And the fact that she can cross the fingers without using her other hand. If I want to cross my fingers I have to make them cross with the opposite hand. So I don’t understand how you can do it one-handed 😮
OMG WE USED TO LIVE HEEEERRREEE! I read it in December and it absolutely fucked me up and I went down a massive rabbit hole after. 👀 Top two books of the year for me. Definitely the best of the genre for me.
I love What You Are Looking For is in the Library. It was in my top 2 last year. I have both the other bookshop ones you mentioned on my list for this year so I'd love to see those!
this inspired me to finally put together my own tbr for 2025, i've been in a bit of a reading slump for a couple of months! excited for the jar video too 🙌
The Spear Cuts Through Water was my best book of last year! I am so curious to hear what you think of it, whenever it gets read. I would say to people, if possible, read the physical book. I haven't heard the audio book, but there are so many POV changes, I could understand if it was confusing as an audio. It's one of the most technically impressive books I have ever read, and I loved the characters.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Spear Cuts through Water and Slewfoot. Both have been on my TBR for a while. I read The Vanishing Birds by the same author as The Spear and have been wanting to read more!
The hunger of the gods and fury of the gods the conclusion are SO GOOD! Once you start you can't put them down. And a Torch against the night is fantastic the other books I think there is some division due to how she takes some of the stories but I think the payoff at the end is worthwhile. And yes to more Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson - finish the lost metal girl I want to hear your thoughts as I feel like I don't know a lot of people who have finished it!
I've loved A Sorceress Comes to Call, but honestly it was really relatable when it comes to themes of controlling environment in childhood and it was a huge factor in it being at the top of my 2024 reads.
I’m currently reading The Knowing (well it’s on pause) - fantastic writing but heavy topic so I’ve been dipping in and out. I heard the author speak at an event and she’s a great storyteller in person too
Hyunam-dong is definitely in the cozy vibes category but in a Monk and Robot style, i really think you might enjoy it for the relationships between characters and the somewhat more mature feeling of the overall narrative, it is a really beautiful story
The licanius trilogy by james islingston blew mw away, i read it because i read the will of the many and couldnt wait for more of his writing with the second book!! I hope you do a video on the series when you finish them!
Girl if you don’t finish Oathbringer, I’m letting Claudia enter your library 😂 Also I recommend the Listen for the Lie audiobook cause it involves a podcast! Had a good time with it.
I remember seeing An Ember in the Ashes on your shelf and was waiting for when you would read it! I'm so glad you liked it, and are continuing with the series ⚔⚔💗💗
I picked up The Spear Cuts Through Water last week. I'd been looking forward to it for a wee while (that cover 😍). But had to put it down around 50-60 pages in - I had no idea what was going on. I did enjoy the prose which I'm a sucker for, and I'm pretty sure I'll still enjoy it if I push through. But I was NOT enjoying pushing through to get to the part where I'm having a good time. I liked (but didn't love) Yumi. The Message is pretty great (audio is good too), and also loved What You Are Looking For - audio too which was fine. Shadow of the gods is also on my pile of shame - I was about halfway through. Still kidding myself that I might go back to it but 🤷♂️
Very ambitious indeed, haha, I feel you there. I’m also trying to focus on series this year! Hoping to read An Ember in the Ashes this month and can’t wait 😊 I really liked A Sorceress Comes to Call and Listen For the Lie and am very curious about Blue Sisters so those are my votes for you!
Outlive...highly recommend! Listened to the audiobook on a VERY LONG trip, but everyone in the car was interested. Bought the physical book immediately after road trip!
OMG The Spear Cuts Through Water is phenomenal!! An intricately woven tapestry of a story.. 5⭐ all time favorite. I recommend reading it physically for the visual cues to help orient yourself within the story.
I recently read and liked The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown - a book about magic books, and a fight between good and evil - sort of a mix between fantasy and sci-fi.
I heard Claudia before you pointed her out and was looking around to see which of my cats was screaming. 😂 Really want to hear your thoughts on The Spear Cuts Through Water!
Wow so many January books!!! I am so impressed at all of that long fantasy. I reread ALL of the Stormlight books last year to prepare for book 5’s release and it was a lot of pages. When you held up Oathbringer and said “I’ve already read a whole book” I really felt that. 😂
I enjoyed “listen for the lie” on audio. Not mind blowing, but fits the genre and worth the listen. Will still love and follow you even if you hate it or DNF. ❤
I have never heard any bad reviews of ANY of the books you have on your TBR. You should be safe with at least 4 star reads. Rollover your leftovers to February-March too to start decluttering in the spring.
Witchy books...I really don't know how you'd feel about them, but it's always worth checking them out: VenCo by Cherie Dimaline (hope I spelled that right). She's a First Nations author and the story is a really interesting take on modern covens connected to Salem. The other one to try is The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. A Harvard grad student discovers a previously undocumented Salem witch. I think it's well written and engaging 🤷♀️maybe you will too?!
I think you need to start reading An Echo of Things to Come right now and read a bit each month because it will probably take the whole year to finish it 🤣 same with Oathbringer
Problem is I want you to read all those fantasy series as well! I’m in the middle of Wheel of Time myself (book 9) so would like to hear your thoughts but I’m curious about the James Islington and John Gwynne series as i might want to read them in the future and same with the Sabaa Tahir series!
I really recommend using the audiobook for Listen for the Lie, it's cray cray. I loved it! Gave it 5 stars. All the characters are morally questionable.
I’m excited to see what you get to from this stack! I’ve read ‘What you’re looking for is in the library’ and ‘Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop’ and enjoyed both; they were easy, cozy reads~ 😊 Slewfoot is absolutely great! Loved it; wish I’d bought it instead of borrowing it from the library! 🥲 I’ll be eagerly awaiting your wrap up~ 🤓👍🏻
Problem is I want you to read all those fantasy series as well! I’m in the middle of Wheel of Time myself (book 9) so would like to hear your thoughts but I’m curious about the James Islington and John Gwynne series as i might want to read them in the future and same with the Sabaa Tahir series! I just finished The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett as my first 2025 read and really enjoyed it as it was a great combo of fantasy and murder mystery.
I really want you to check out "A spear cuts through water"! Many of my friends loved it and it's on my tbr for this year. Also, I would love for you to continue Jasmine throne. I really liked the first book and heard amazing things about the conclusion.
I binge-read the Ember series in 2023, books 3 & 4 are fantastic(imo). There are a few gut punches, and being very unsure if certain characters are going to make it or not.
I reread Shadow of the Gods and Hunger, both were still fantastic! Fury of the Gods was z 3.76☆ let down, but the authors daughter died so he gets a pass. Fires of Vengeance was really good! Book 3 still isn't out, but zi have high hopes!
Hey, I'm first!! My tbr is East of Eden; Crime &Punishment; The Count of Monte Cristo; Piranesi and reread Shogun. This list will be spread out through the year because I don't have all of them. I like physical books
I love watching your videos because our taste in/expectations from books seems to align most of the time, so I trust your recs a lot. I've recently read How to Sell a Haunted House thanks to you, and am finishing The Final Girl Support Group. I also read Kindred, I believe thanks to your recommendation as well, as that was an amazing pick. I was drowning in Mystery/Thriller, which is kind of my comfort zone, so I'm grateful I can trust you to help me pick different books that won't leave me feeling like I wasted my time on something awful (which is why I tend to pick mystery/thriller ... you usually get what you signed up for with those). Next up on my reading list are Artificial Condition by Martha Wells, Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler and Mort by Terry Pratchett. Hoping to have a good time this January!
My cat scratches and bites at my books, partly because he knows it will get my attention and (I think) partly because he wants to be involved. I can't leave books I'm reading in my bedroom, because he'll go after them if I'm too slow getting up in the morning! But I got a sacrificial book from a thrift store that I give to him when I'm reading, and he has a fantastic time shredding it while I read in peace, lol
Hey Emily, have you tried any Angela Slatter? Her books are major witchy vibes, beautifully written, strong female main characters. I recently read The Briar Book of the Dead and The Path of Thorns and they were both amazing. I think she might really be up your alley.

The fires of vengeance is one of my favorite books of all time, sometimes I’d be doing smth and would start thinking abt it 😪 (the tiniest romance subplot from book 1 was good but omggg this one LITERALLY had me kicking my feet, it’s so tiny that it’s almost nonexistent but yk that’s when the best love story happens)

I vote you start with We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer - Canadian author for the win! I've heard folks raving about this and I'm curious but I don't read much horror so I'm hesitating.
So, I have a question as I've also got a lot unfinished series (especially those I started years ago)... do you read summaries on the previous volumes, do you simply have good memory and remember what happened, or reread them? Curious to know. Best!
lol I thought that was my kitty cat Penny meowing 😹 though she doesn't scratch my books... Fritz takes care of that 😣 he likes to rearrange my books......
I wish i had your optimism with the book quantity in a month, but nah. I had to reduce this years number of books challenge because i'm in my last year of phD still haven't publish anything and anxiety is creeping in, so yah, gonna take it slow.
I have a good memory. I'm sure there are some things here and there I'll forget but usually I'm okay. When I don't think I remember I'll try and read a summary but I see it as a bad sign lol
Hunger of the Gods is a chunky book but I found it to be a very quick read. And if you like books that center around libraries/bookstores, I recommend The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams.
It was the first book I've ever read in one sitting. I didn't love it as much as some people (I hope there's a sequel, otherwise there's a LOT of information that served absolutely no purpose), but it was definitely entertaining and messes with your head.
Girl the way your cross your fingers always blows my mind, I’ve never seen anyone cross their fingers like that before haha. I’ve watched you for years and it still surprises me everytime I see it
LOL I don’t know how to do it “the normal way” 💀
@ haha - do you know where you got it from? Like does anyone in your family do it like that or have you just randomly started doing it?
i dont cross my fingers too much, but ive done it like this when i want the best luck i can gather from it, more crossed fingers the better
No idea! I feel like I’ve always done it that way (double the luck!) but I’m not sure
And the fact that she can cross the fingers without using her other hand. If I want to cross my fingers I have to make them cross with the opposite hand. So I don’t understand how you can do it one-handed 😮
Please read We Used to Live Here first! I loved it, and I'm really interested to see what you will think of it!
I think it will be my next read!
I concur!! 👍
I’m excited for the jar video! And I’m glad to see one of the cats, I’ve missed them ❤
Which books should I focus on?
What’s on your TBR? 📚
my vote is for The Spear Cuts Through Water 😄
The spear cuts through water! On my TBR to
OMG WE USED TO LIVE HEEEERRREEE!
I read it in December and it absolutely fucked me up and I went down a massive rabbit hole after. 👀
Top two books of the year for me. Definitely the best of the genre for me.
Spear Cuts Through water!
I loved slewfoot. It's historic fantasy with a touch of horror. And the drawings are stunning.
Oh I didn't know there were drawings too!
I love What You Are Looking For is in the Library. It was in my top 2 last year. I have both the other bookshop ones you mentioned on my list for this year so I'd love to see those!
I absolutely loved “What You Are Looking for is in the Library!” I read it early last year also, and it was great

I can’t wait to read the new Grady Hendrix book. I’ve liked all of his so far except for one and I love his sense of humor. (Hi, Clawdia!!!!!)
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Spear Cuts through Water and Slewfoot. Both have been on my TBR for a while. I read The Vanishing Birds by the same author as The Spear and have been wanting to read more!
Finally got around to Slewfoot this year and LOVED it. It was pretty intense for a lot of the book, though, Emily was right 😅
Vanished Birds is stunning. I can’t get over Simon Jimenez’s writing 😍
The spear cuts though the water hope you love it Emily it is one of my favorites 📖📚📚🎉🎉📚📙📖📙📖🎉🎉🎉📙📙📖📚🎆🎆🎊🎊🎉🎉🎉
The hunger of the gods and fury of the gods the conclusion are SO GOOD! Once you start you can't put them down. Definitely do listen for the lie in audiobook. One of my favorites for the year
I vote for Sanderson!! :) You can't go wrong with Brandy Sandy. I have just finished the Rhythm of War a couple of weeks ago
Hyunam-dong is definitely in the cozy vibes category but in a Monk and Robot style, i really think you might enjoy it for the relationships between characters and the somewhat more mature feeling of the overall narrative, it is a really beautiful story
Oh that sounds nice!
be careful with Slewfoot if u don't like to see violence against cats like me, just warning incase!
Glad you said this, Slewfoot is on my TBR and I love cats so I’ll give it a pass.
Oh thank you, I've heard so many good things about that book but I can't handle things happening to cats
yep. after ALL the glowing reviews, one booktuber finally mentioned that. I promptly removed it from my TBR.
Thanks for the heads up!
Hahaha no the threats!! I’ll get to it in 2025 🤞🤞
I have got to stop watching your videos around my dog. Claudia's meowing makes her go crazy 😂
there's no way you still haven't finished oathbringer 😭😭 i'm sorry but this is so funny to me 😂💜
🎶 we listen and we don’t judge 🎶
I remember seeing An Ember in the Ashes on your shelf and was waiting for when you would read it! I'm so glad you liked it, and are continuing with the series ⚔⚔💗💗
Really enjoyed Listen for the Lie as an audiobook!

Shadow of the gods is also on my pile of shame - I was about halfway through. Still kidding myself that I might go back to it but 🤷♂️
I really liked Listen for the lie, and I recommend you listen to the audiobook. It's well produced and makes everything even more interesting.
Please read Slewfoot!! I loved it soo much!!
I want to read Yumi and the Nightmare Painter soon too.
Yes to any kind of readathon! 🎉
Aaah I have a Sorceress comes to call on my tbr!
Outlive...highly recommend! Listened to the audiobook on a VERY LONG trip, but everyone in the car was interested. Bought the physical book immediately after road trip!
Thank you for saying it was Claudia? Clawdia? that was meowing. I was beginning to look around to figure out which of my cats was meowing. And why! 😊
omg lol I asked if her name was spelled Claw-dia too 😹
OMG The Spear Cuts Through Water is phenomenal!! An intricately woven tapestry of a story.. 5⭐ all time favorite.
I recommend reading it physically for the visual cues to help orient yourself within the story.
Ember in the Ashes is on my TBR so I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the sequel.
I loved we used to live here!! It’s so fun!
I'd love it if you went with The Spear Cuts Through Water - and hey, you already started it, so it only makes sense to finish it :D
I recently read and liked The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown - a book about magic books, and a fight between good and evil - sort of a mix between fantasy and sci-fi.
So interested in your thoughts on we used to live here. I couldn’t with that one 😭😭😭 but fires of vengeance and hunger of the gods are AMAZING
I heard Claudia before you pointed her out and was looking around to see which of my cats was screaming. 😂
Really want to hear your thoughts on The Spear Cuts Through Water!

Awesome January TBR love it! 🎆🎆🎊🎉🎉🎉🎆🎆🎊🎉🎇🎇🎇🎉🎉📚📙📚📖📚📖📖📙📙📚📖📚📚📚📙📙📚📚📚📙📙📚📖📖📙📙
I loved We Used To Live Here. Just be prepared for a VERY unsatisfying ending lol. It’s being turned into a movie as well which I can’t wait for.
Très excitée pour Slewfoot! J'attendais une raison pour le lire :)
Emily! Do Listen for the lie on audio!! The audio is so good.
I think you need to start reading An Echo of Things to Come right now and read a bit each month because it will probably take the whole year to finish it 🤣 same with Oathbringer
I would love an ARC/new releases video!
The Message was my final book of 2024 and such a powerful way to finish the year that has been.
Oh it will be in my video about series for sure! I have book 2 on my shelf so it’s happening 🤞🤞
I binge-read the Ember series in 2023, books 3 & 4 are fantastic(imo). There are a few gut punches, and being very unsure if certain characters are going to make it or not.
yumi and the nightmare painter made it on to my worst books last year lol i hope you enjoy it more than i did!!
I reread Shadow of the Gods and Hunger, both were still fantastic! Fury of the Gods was z 3.76☆ let down, but the authors daughter died so he gets a pass.
Fires of Vengeance was really good! Book 3 still isn't out, but zi have high hopes!
I vote for The Spear that cuts through water. I dnfed it at 25% because I was in the wrong mood. Not sure if I should try again.
Hey, I'm first!! My tbr is East of Eden; Crime &Punishment; The Count of Monte Cristo; Piranesi and reread Shogun. This list will be spread out through the year because I don't have all of them. I like physical books
East of Eden is just perfect, I loved it.
I really liked the great hunt
I love watching your videos because our taste in/expectations from books seems to align most of the time, so I trust your recs a lot. I've recently read How to Sell a Haunted House thanks to you, and am finishing The Final Girl Support Group. I also read Kindred, I believe thanks to your recommendation as well, as that was an amazing pick. Not sure if you recommended All Systems Red by Martha Wells, I believe I picked that up thanks to you, but I could be mistaken. Either way, thanks for helping me pick up some different books!
I wouldn’t recommend Fledging lol it’s apparently her worst so I’d go with Parable of the Sower or Dawn!
I'm on my first Grady Hendrix book, My Best Friend's Exorcism, about 25% through so far and loving it! :)
That was my first one too!
LOL Clawdia likes to remove my bookmarks and even more my post its 😂
Hey Emily, have you tried any Angela Slatter? Her books are major witchy vibes, beautifully written, strong female main characters. I recently read The Briar Book of the Dead and The Path of Thorns and they were both amazing. I think she might really be up your alley.
Also Happy New Year! Love watching your videos as a fellow Canadian book lover!
Really enjoyed "What you are looking for...", hope you will too when you get to it. Always looking forward to all you upload.
I wish you loads of 5-star reads this year, love, happiness and health to enjoy it all. ❤📚🐈⬛
We Used to Live Here! It has so many loose ends, but still really good, it´s creepy.
Listen for the Lie is AMAZING on Audio. Full cast and sounds like a real podcast!
Let Claudia in!!! LOL
I did! You can see her at the end 😂
You need to finish oathbringer it’s so good. I just finished it last month. It is the slowest in the series so if it takes you a while to read it that’s ok. I started it in May and finished it in December but I was just listening to it on audio mostly.
I loved yumi a lot and the Hyunam bookshop was really good and I dislike cozy books
I vote you start with We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer - Canadian author for the win! I've heard folks raving about this and I'm curious but I don't read much horror so I'm hesitating.

Witches vlog would be awesome
I thought We Used to Live Here was just ok... The best part was solving the morse code puzzles lol.
Spear Cuts through water 🎉
Reading The Hunger of the Gods now and so far I would recommend
Listen for the Lie…the audio is definitely the way to go!
Hunger of the Gods. I found it reads faster than it looks! ❤fav trilogy maybe of all time. One of the main characters is a kickass older woman.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on We Used to Live Here - I’m going to read it during Winterween (readathon hosted by Gabbyreads) ❄️👻
How do you remember the books from a series you read years ago?
I tend to read a series at a time otherwise i forget everything
I have a good memory. I'm sure there are some things here and there I'll forget but usually I'm okay. When I don't think I remember I'll try and read a summary but I see it as a bad sign lol
hopefully you read The Message by Ta Nehisi Coates. It's really illuminating and hopefully you do a review about it.
Are you québécoise? If you grew up in Canada but also didn't speak English growing up, that seems like the logical conclusion 🇨🇦
Yup!
@BookswithEmilyFox Très cool ! J'aime bien l'accent québécois 😊
I’m telling you- we used to live here is so so good. Has house of leaves , twilight zone vibes. People who hate it just don’t get it I promise you 😊
for bookstore books the door to door bookstore it's German translation fiction
Hunger of the Gods is a chunky book but I found it to be a very quick read. And if you like books that center around libraries/bookstores, I recommend The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams.
We Used To Live Here is a great read. Unputdownable!
It was the first book I've ever read in one sitting. I didn't love it as much as some people (I hope there's a sequel, otherwise there's a LOT of information that served absolutely no purpose), but it was definitely entertaining and messes with your head.
Definitely Slewfoot! Love that book SO MUCH!
And I thought my January pile was daunting :D
You really need to read the women!!! It doesn't matter that you don't like war srories, its so much more!
Good luck with islington and brom! Fool me twice...
I vote We Used To Live Here! Hope you love ambiguous endings. 😅
Oh no lol
