Sorry but putting tuners on these engines is idiotic. They are legendary simply because they are dead nuts reliable. Any additional tuning is only going to reduce that reliability and cause excessive wear and tear on the engine.
The #1 reason these engines require a rebuild before 500k miles is because some doorknob chipped the damn thing and had no idea what the hell they were doing. Pop goes the weasel.
And yes they are pretty close to the best, I think the 12V Cummins edges out the 7.3L PSD, with the 24V Cummins coming in a close third. Still definitely one of the best of all time.

You can actually improve the transmission tune significantly with these tuners as well which notably increases the longevity of the trans. As I am sure you know, most say the weakness on these truck is the trans afterall.
A 30hp tow tune isnt going to hurt the ol' 7.3 although I do agree with you that if you run a hot tune all the time, expect to shorten the life of the motor.
