Your ranunculus is stunning! It looks amazing on you and is a work of art. Yes to the parenting talk! And you are clearly an amazing mom- not a paycheck lol but a high five! I am dreading middle school. My daughter is very sensitive- not only to pain and hurt from others but she is also so sensitive to what other people are feeling. And middle school is just so many big feelings. But you are doing a great job! The little seeds you planted and watered are growing 🥰 I think we just try to be a safe, loving and supportive place for them to land no matter if it’s a good day or bad day.
I give up books all the time- life is too short and my time is too precious to struggle with something that’s supposed to be enjoyable ❤

Hi Kaetlyn! I hope you’re feeling 100% this week!
I dreaded middle school too, but I’ve actually found it to be a really incredible time. It’s magical to see your child becoming a real person. Yes there is struggle, but its more mentally stimulating than the struggles of the little ones!
My 9 year old daughter is a lot like yours. Sensitive in herself and in others. But they are stronger than they lead on. There is some fire there that we can stoke!

@@AnotherKnittingPod indeed! When she wants to be she can be very strong! Just yesterday in gym (which is not her fave) a boy was yelling at her to go faster at whatever and she told him “how fast I go is NOT your business” I’m glad to know when she needs to, she uses her voice. But in general she is sensitive and when others are slighted, bullied or something it really upsets her.

I love your ranunculus, the colour looks so good and the roll sleeves are great. I’ve made a few myself and I know exactly what you mean, each time I put one of mine on I just exhale and say oh yes. Your lace and fade boxy yarn is amazing. I’m not a fluoro kind of person but it is so beautiful to look at, the top is going to be amazing. Time is precious, it’s my most precious resource. So if something isn’t landing, like your book then the best thing to do is let it go and move on. Thanks for sharing, you are so delightfully happy I smile all the way through while watching 🥰

Thank you Lena for your inspirations, knitting and otherwise. I love your Ranunculus sweater. I have knit that pattern and have made several now, although like you, I avoided the trend because I tend to do that, but in the end I love it. I also really enjoyed your analogy regarding books and sweater patterns and techniques, where at all different ages we tend to pick up and understand or get more out of the things we are reading and/or knitting. Knowledge grows with our age and experiences. Congrats on helping your child grow and figure his way through this crazy life. I have 3 children grown and married now, and find myself still helping them along the way. It’s a parent’s most important role.

Hope you’re having a great week so far 💜

I totally understand, I think that Klara & the sun is not for everyone; I found it interesting but it also wasn’t my favorite and some parts /characters were so annoying. I tend to give a book 50 to 100 pages and if I can’t get captivated by it then I just move on. OMG - I really love how your Lace & Fade is looking and can’t wait to see more of it! The colorway in both the textures/yarns is just so amazing! Have a wonderful weekend!

I'm heartened to hear that your parenting seeds took root. After your last podcast, I was thinking back to the middle school years for my girls, and you could not pay me to do that again. It was rough. I have no doubt that you are doing a great job of being a safe harbor for your kiddo. Sometimes all you can do is give them a soft place to land, but it is so hard not to get involved in something they need to work out themselves.
In other news, I stocked up on Linen Quill during a recent Purl Soho sale, and will be casting on my long-planned Ranunculus. I know you probably said in an earlier episode, but did you hold the yarn double like may have or add a strand of mohair, or is that just a single LQ knit? Whatever, you did, I love it. So many options!
Lastly, I have enjoyed your book recommendations. I used to finish every book I started, but eventually, like you, I realized that I only have so much reading time. Every minute I spend reading a book I am not enjoying is a minute that could be bringing me joy in another way. Now I just kick them to the curb if I find myself avoiding them when I would normally be reading (listening).

    • @AnotherKnittingPod
      @AnotherKnittingPod  Год назад +1

Hi Lisa! Parenting in general is not for the faint of heart! It is a long, grueling, but such a rewarding journey.
Re: the Ranunuculus, I just held one strand single. I like it for an all-year piece. But I’m dying to hold it with a strand of mohair. I think it would make it even more magical!
And yes on books! There is no need to power through as we used to do. Please do recommend any books that you love-I’m always looking for recommendations!

You are the best! So much to respond to here! First: those kids absorb more than you realize. They don’t show it right away, but they go away and process and it shows up later. I especially found that once they left home and came back mom & dad became a lot smarter! Mine even email me for recipes which I used to cook for them and I get a kick out of that. Second: the best thing I ever did as a reader was to give myself permission to abandon a book I wasn’t enjoying. There are just too many amazing books in the world and you will never get to them all, so don’t waste time on one that you aren’t enjoying! I’m reading Tomorrow etc. now and really enjoying it :)

Forget about ever knitting from a vintage pattern unless you're willing to make a total blind leap of faith. There's usually no chart nor schematic. English teacher here - so have to comment on Klara and the Sun. I read the book because last year I read Ishiguro''s Never Let Me Go and it was SOOOO good. I do recommend that one. Like you, I just could not connect to the characters in Klara. I forced myself to finish because I thought for sure that the ending must be the reason that the book got so much applause. Nope. I didn't enjoy it. However, the topic is HUGE right now. AI is blasting the world of education this year. If you haven't heard about it, look it up. AI is now able to write and complete assignments for students. Our plaigarism software doesn't catch it yet. And of course, most kids want to get the work done, get the grade - with minimal effort so they are using it. As an English teacher, I have switched to ALL my writing assignments being written with pen/paper and during class. ;-( It's bringing Ishiguro's world too close for comfort.

Hi Sylvia-I always love your messages. I feel like we’d be such good friends IRL!
I can only imagine how crazy AI has made your job. Teaching was always an insanely hard job, and it must be tenfold after the pandemic and the advent of these crazy technologies. I think its actually super valuable for students to go back to the old way of writing papers though, but stinks that it has to be in class like that. Hopefully plagiarism technology catches up to all this soon!
Everyone loves Never Let Me Go but I’m scared to read it! Maybe I’m not smart enough!

Middle school is the worst. But because your children have the support of loving parents they will come out of it okay! Even most children who don't have that support support manage through but it is much easier if they do. It's so tempting to be a friend to our children but what they need most is for us to be the parent and then the friendship will come. I wear my knitting as much as I can even if it's just socks. I want to build my wardrobe up so that I can wear my knitting all the time. I read a book recently where I realized halfway through that I did not like the main character. I preserved through though because I liked the the mystery. It is a series but I will not be reading anymore because I didn’t like the main character. Also I grew up in Jamestown which is the area that Lucille Ball was from!

Hi Micki! I did see the email but didn’t let myself fall down the rabbit hole! I keep *accidentally* buying yarn! But now you’ve peaked my interest. Going to go check it out 😘

Thoroughly enjoy all your videos; very inspirational. I would love to use the same yarn for my ranunculus and wondering if it is itchy? I have sensitive skin and hesitant in ordering it! TIA

Hi Joyce!! Thank you! I love Linen Quill and I don’t find it itchy. But the things I’ve made with it have been looser. I don’t know what it would be like in a very snug garment. I think after a solid blocking it really softens up. It’s such a great yarn at a great price point, I think its worth giving it a shot! Maybe try it in a shawl or something loose so you can get a sense of it. Hope that helps 💚

I did finish Klara and the Sun, but I didn’t love it either.

Ya, such a bummer. I’ve yet to find anyone who loved it! And your review makes me happy I didn’t power through! Life is too short.

I'm wondering if you knit from a chart or written. I'm a written knitter. Doesn't matter...just super curious. I too have a closet full of clothes I don't wear and I truly need to go through and donate! I have a lot I will 100% never wear again so why do I keep them?!?!? And books...not everyone likes the same things. Like Hamilton...everyone raves about it and loves it and I'm over here on an island of one like...I don't get why its so loved. Other than the soundtrack...I honestly hated it. Thought it was boring. Stopping ANYTHING that doesn't give joy is ok. ❤️

I am definitely a written kind of girl, but I’m forcing myself to work from the chart on this simple lace section of the Lace and Fade Boxy. I know some patterns (especially cables) are only charted, so I want to get used to following a chart.
I agree on staying true to our North Star of joy and happiness! I have never seen Hamilton in any form. As I’ve said, I’m pretty slow on the uptake with popular things. See my experience with the Ranunculus. 😂 But your opinion has piqued my interest! I wonder if I will like it or hate it!
