I love angles where everyone knows who the masked guy is. With DOOM it added a touch of humor to the very real respect for Simmons and Reed. Plus they had that great entrance music.
I initially thought of Harlem Heat as WCW's lesser answer to Doom. I actually resented them as a team at first because of the sudden dissolution of what I thought to be the far superior team in Doom.
WCW tag team division was top notch during this time, Doom, The Steiners, the Samoan swat team, the skyscrapers, varsity club, Road Warriors, Fantastics, freebirds, midnight express, etc etc
Doom is My favorite tag team of all time along with the Road Warriors and the British Bulldogs and Harlem Heat!!! O yeah and the Dudley Boys. O yeah and the Steiner Brothers !!!

Flair at the time wanted A belt and Sting wasn't dropping the world title back to him. So he decided he wanted the world tag-team titles but Doom said 'no'. That was the beginning of the end for Doom. Bill watts gave Ron his push to the world title because he wanted to recreate the success he had with Junkyard Dog. When Watts was forced out that was the end of Ron's championship reign. Which is why he was champion for only around six months, could have been shorter. Dusty had nothing to do with Ron's push. That was all Cowboy.

Almost 20 yrs ago I joined the Navy and I was in my home Wash DC I never attended WWE match while at a local DC restaurant I saw Ron Simmons and told him I love WWE and I bought tickets but he told me to go and he had free tickets for me and my 3 sons. I wish I could tell him thanks again

Harley Race is my "Uncle", he and my Grandparents grew up together in Quitman Missouri, population 45 people, being the only 3 kids their age in town they were naturally all 3 life long best friends, When my grandparents were older my grandparents went to college at Mizzou and settled down in central Missouri which was perfect for Harley when he was on the road going around the middle of the state doing shows, because he would come stay the night with the family, The guys I met....... literally everyone from Bulldog Bob Brown, Bruiser Brody to Ric Flair. My favorite was Rufus R. Jones, he was just a big kid at heart.

Looking back now, Doom was severely underrated. They had the power to match the Road Warriors and were better athletes/wrestlers. Look at old Mid-South, Reed could do a promo. I think with a better push, they could’ve been top 5-10 all time.
Wrestling is a white guys sport. I mean no offense by saying that but they weren't going to let the belts be with Doom for long. Neither Flair or Windham needed to be tag champions. Especially Flair. Besides recent yrs with WWE pushing The Bloodline through Covid all, well I'll say most minority championship runs are always brief. Look how fast they took it off of Kofi. Now just imagine how a Black or other minority wrestler in the 80s and 90s was treated. Especially down here in the South on NWA/WCW.
If I recall, Ron Simmons never really heeled it up -- not in the ring and not in promos. While in Doom he was kind of a tweener, who didn't cheat much himself but who didn't exactly object to his partner winning the match by cheating. This was the same strategy for Harlem Heat.
Doom was amazing, they looked alike body wise they were huge built but at the same time were not identical. They were why I stopped and saw WCW for the first time they were big, fast and I think they were pulled apart too soon. It was not their skin color, it was their size, speed and both power houses. Just picture two Ron Simmons or if you knew who Butch Reed was two Butch Reeds.
Teddy's right. Doom was great even when Woman was their manager. Should have stayed a team longer and their breakup feud should have been longer too. It just seemed one day they decided they wanted Ron as a solo babyface and moved him past Butch and Teddy as fast as they could.

They should have lost the maskes as soon as they debuted and just been themselves. It did'nt make any sense for them to be these mysterious mercenary types and for Jim Ross to continually talk up their past athletic accomplishments. They should have been Heels who were in the right, Going after the Stieners and having the credentials they did that fued writes itself. WCW was too scared to really play up the racial undertones but Reed and Simmons could have been almost sympathetic tweeners in alot of towns. Missed opportunity.
