Funny thing, when I bought this car back in 2017, I put the wide whitewalls on it as well. Initially I had dog dish hubcaps and trim rings on it. When I sold it to the guy in Blockhouse, I put the full factory wheel overs on it, but left the tires on it. It looked great! When the new owner got it, he removed those nice wheels and tires, jacked it up and put shackles on the darned thing. I'm glad to see he sold it, because it really didn't deserve to sit outside like it did.

My Mom had a Green 1956 Plymouth Savoy Club Sedan, but now where near as deluxe as Chad's. It was the first car she bought when it was old, and she was in her mid-twenties. (She learned to drive in her early twenties, and her first car I think was a gift from her Dad => a old Vauxhall with "trafficators" - semaphore signals that came out of the door posts. She didn't like that car much at all.)
Her Savoy was a straight six with a 3 on the tree and very reliable! She called it the Green Hornet! I think it had an AM Radio and that was about it for extras. She kept it until about 1971 when she got her "new" 1967 Dodge Polaris 4 Door Sedan with an automatic. She thought she'd gone to heaven.
Maybe Chad will paint his Savoy Green and I'll show my Mom the video. This car brings back memories.

Hi, the problem with your wheel covers is Plymouth had 15" wheels in 56. They went to 14" in 57. You can transition to a 57-66 wheel cover or go to the 15" wheels. They went to the smaller wheel to 57 to lower the car a little. Almost everyone did. They even put 14" wheels on the full-size Chrysler but had a 9:00 x 14" tire size to handle the bigger car. Wish you luck with the car I always loved the 55-56 Plymouth especially the fury.

Tom here from Idaho. You were talking about the later Plymouths with the Christine style side moulding. As soon as I saw the 56's lower moulding with the downward swoop on the door, what if you took and flipped the moulding over so that it swooped UP at the rear close to the rear fin and then forward to the door. You would have to weld the two pieces together but welding stainless can be done. Just a thought from an old armchair body man. Love what you and Jo are doing. I'll be following along. If you've got extra lower mouldings you could run a double back and then up. How cool would that be!

A lot of comments here and I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but your hub caps won't fit because they are for a15 inch wheel. '56 Plymouths came from the factory with 15 inchers. I just sold my '56 Savoy that I had for over 14 years. It's going to be interesting to see how this turns out. I like how you don't follow the rules and do your own thing. Keep it up.

Interesting project. A good friend who recently passed away had owned his 56 Fury for 42 years. All 56's were hardtops, white with the gold fin and as you say, not many were produced in that first production year. I believe it was around 4200 produced. Looking forward to seeing what you guys do with this Savoy.

    I bought a 56 Plymouth Savoy , 2 door sedan in high school. 1967.
Had it for many , many years.
Put in a 1959 318 poly V8 engine, in place of the original 277 poly V8.
I bought a dual quad manifold in 1969, for the poly 318, from a 1958 Plymouth Fury (found in a local car parts yard). I had it on my poly 318 for years. I had the Fury camshaft as well. That engine was very strong!
    Lots of torque, as well.
I sold the manifold and two carburetors last year, the car itself has been gone from me for over 20 years.
Chad, the hubcaps in this video are indeed the original 1956 Plymouth factory hubcaps, and they are 15”.
A few years before I gave the car to my son, I installed a LA 318 engine and Torqueflyte transmission from a 1973 Plymouth. That was a cool engine swap. I had to use a rare 340 high performance exhaust manifold, on the driver’s side. To clear the original steering box. Also, I used an early 90’s Dodge Dakota starter. For clearance issue , as well.
A fabricated rear transmission mount on the rear crossmember and a custom shortened drive shaft completed the swap.
I gleaned a lot of information on the 1956 Plymouths during the years I owned mine.
    Loved your TV show, Chad.
Glad I found your RUclips channel.
    I’m a fan.

Chad and Jolene...I wholeheartedly agree...I watched the pickup build from day one, and look forward to seeing it's completion.
But as you said, some things need to be done to it, mechanically, before it can go farther.
And I for one, completely understand that some of those things might be stuff that you feel you need help with.
I may never become a "subscriber".
HOWEVER, after these past couple of months, you have definitely gained me as a daily viewer.

Hemi in his 1958 Station wagon, and what a blast that was. Really like where you are going with this great old sedan. Keep up the good work. My first car was a 1956 Plymouth Savoy exactly like the one here. My was the white over yellow color combination. It had a V8 and three speed manual transmission. I loved that car and drove it for about five years. The body style is quite nice. Brakes were tough to work on and some wheel lugs were left handed. 1956 was the first year Plymouth built the Fury model. It was a a beautiful car and they are EXTREMELY rare. All of them white with a large golden trim panel on the side.\ and lots of extras.

Yes sir I believe that you are seeing a trend here where people are not necessarily going all the way to doing a frame off restoration on these older cars as it is quite time consuming not to mention expensive. However I did some work for a fellow who was redoing a 54 Ford which had the plexiglass portion of the roof (I think it was referred to as a sunliner?) Well we had the front end off of the car and of course there was some suspension work to be done and I noticed that the tubular (factory) crossmember was rusted bad and could fail (this supported the lower control arms on the suspension). So depending upon where the car spent its life a thorough inspection might be in order to evaluate stability of the frame and running gear. Now my Granddaddy gave my Dad a 56 Chevrolet that he purchased from the original owner around 1962. He gave my Dad the car in 1968 and we towed it home in December of that year. We did what was necessary to get it in mechanical shape (engine smoked like a freight train) and when we got to the paint and body Dad let me strip the body to the point where all the car had was the windshield and backlight glass. We stripped the paint off of most of the car (the doors and fenders got a good sanding) and painted the car a shade of yellow similar to the Chevelle, Camaro and Nova vehicles in the sixties (car was originally turqouise and it was a basic 150 2dr sedan six cyl three speed) What you have here with this Plymouth is a good car with all of the trim and just really needing the paint removed and a good repaint and mechanically brought up to snuff. Back in the sixties there were very few people who did frame off restorations and most people generally got a good paint job and some interior work but mostly engine and brakes and such. My Dad let me strip this Chevrolet out and he did the paint as well as the bodywork (I helped and learned) We started on that car in Jan 69 and I was driving it to my summer job of pumping gas in June of 69. This Plymouth is going to look boss. And oh yeah my Dad could put a paint job on a car that rivaled most paint and body shops in our area.

I'm on the 3rd year of a 6 month frame swap of a 4WD Dakota under a '52 IH half ton. Only because of other priorities and deciding to do more bodywork than originally planned. Keep at it and you do it the way you want it. I've actually decided NOT to make mine a modified looking truck for the first time in my life and I'm going normal sized tires steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps. (Built a Skoolie last summer instead of working on "Mater") That is a great looking car shape. I found a 3 tone twin of your car many years ago but didn't buy it Seems like it was pink, white and black. It looked faded enough to be factory paint. I had a '52 Plymouth coupe I swapped a Chevy small block in, and it had a broken front coil spring. I was parting out the '70's chevy impala the engine was out of and I took one of the springs out of the Impala, cut a couple of coils off and it lowered the car nicely with a stiffer spring that rode great but didn't bottom out with the heavier drivetrain. You might consider a set of chevy springs if you decide to lower it.

I have to admit the 56 Ply has better lines then my previous post said.
The clean white shop for background , rather than the grass boneyard environment it came from.
    30 day repair + paint?
My customers know when they drop off a car, I don't constrain myself to a firm timeline.
I think on the Ply, the worst part may be after the chrome is pulled, and the rust bubbles.

I won't be unhappy with whatever you do with it. I just like what you do. Picture a performer singing or playing a song. When it becomes their song they've got a hit no matter who did the same piece before them. You as a creator inspire as you may inadvertently teach . Oh and of course Jolene too. She's got her own thunder. Individually you're both good. Together you're awesome.

Blah blah blah what's so hard for people to understand it takes time to build a car, you guys watch too much TV where there's 10-30 guys building the car with their own interior shops, fabricators, mechanics, bodymen etc. Give the guy a break he's only 1 man. Seems to me that he's getting these builds as far as the mechanic stage then putting them in storage until he's ready to bring in a mechanic to help him. Be patient and stay tuned Jolene knows what she's doing. Rome wasn't built in a day ! 😉✌

There's so much missing from cars there days. Before and during the 50's they had some nice wide whitewall tires. They added to the style of the car, along with the rims they made too. Just those wider whitewalls make that car look better. I'm glad you're changing the color as well!!
