Obviously Peter is funny as hell, Cartman and Randy Marsh....Stewie CAN be...I am just counting culturally significant, well known, and impactful characters.. There are other greats in lesser known stuff.. The connective tissue between all of these characters and many other comedic greats? They are all some combination of complete unrepentant terrible pieces of shit and borderling mentally retarded in other ways (but some with bursts of extreme intelligence when it comes to getting their way, except probably Randy). That type of character (maybe too broad to be one "type" but w.e.) is the peak of comedy. Many of the funniest moments for each of them are layered while being wildly absurd. Also, most of them have zero self awareness. When I dissect it the actual comedy becomes difficult to discern what exactly makes this shit so funny outside of the absurdity...but despite these shows seeming "childish" at a glance, the writing and characterization sit as highest form of comedy. I believe attempting to quantify exactly a joke's (or anything, really) "intelligence" is absolutely foolish, a sign of a lower capacity for conceptualization understanding for the term...BUT I put the best moments of these shows far above what our culture has defined as "smart comedy"...word play, puns, pseudo-subtle quips that elicit a "heh" at best and actually laughter only from people who want to show everyone they get the joke. Lots of what the average philistine considers "high brow" is far from layered. Yes, I realize saying these comedies are "actually intelligent, man" is an entry level, basic observation but I really think the brilliance of the aforementioned "terrible person" archetypes is often understated. A majority of clip compilations for these kind of shows leave out much of the actually funny shit while consisting of a show's misses or reiterated comedy from culture at large.
