Heads up! Friday 29th March and Monday 1st April are Easter public holidays here in the UK so we won't be releasing Daily Briefing episodes on those days. We'll be back on Tuesday April 2nd - see you then!
Could it be because Israel is committing genocide???

While a lot of people like to treat “the West” as a singular entity, especially when it comes to wars like Israel and Palestine, but it’s interesting to see just how divided the EU has been over this issue
Even if you accuse all of these countries of trading with Israel and whatnot, there is a clear difference between say the stance of Spain, Belgium and Ireland, and the stance of France, Germany and Italy
Yes, usually “the west” only unifies when it comes to conflicts with countries like Russia, but with Palestine it has always been divided, and the countries stance heavily depends on the party that’s currently ruling
At the risk of the mask slipping from my irish nationalism, it's worth pointing out that Ireland being part of "the West" is an extremely modern idea.
@@britfox7766Nothing wrong with some Irish nationalism but I'd have to disagree... in the sense that the Irish were just called "the British". Like, if Texas seceded it wouldn't be fair to say that Texans haven't been considered part of the West. Even within the BE Ireland was never so culturally distinct like India, for example.

Concerning the EU migration policy, I think over 50% of people don't find the policy not drastically enough. Not so much the worry about human rights incidents.
Easy, don't come to Europe then. Europe is for Europeans.
They imply that later on, but the it's very confusingly written.
Exactly. It’s deliberately misleading so that people who didn’t follow the legislative process are led to believe that Europeans are opposing it for human rights violation. That’s some clever journalism right there.
Thank you Ireland and South Africa for stand up for the voiceless. The world is proud of you.
I prefer Georgina as the presenter. She makes an effort to pronounce the words and names properly.

@@Daibana yeah the guys are just lazy

Ireland and South Africa have history of this. They know very well about this subject matter!
South Africa praises putin and xi along with having sympathies for hitler
Nation states aren't sentient, it's all just political theatre.
South Africa is a borderline failed state, with extreme racism plaguing it's society.
Ireland didn't help fight the Nazis in ww2 and the whole country is a glorified tax heaven for billion dollar corporations.
Tbf, so does Germany and Israel as well…
What do you mean?
When the first plans to settle Jews in Palestine were drawn by the UK, the Brits aimed to create (and I quote) "a little loyal Jewish Ulster in a sea of hostile Arabs."
Their history is literally just ours with a different ending. Many of the people involved are the same too.
Assuming Israel is found guilty of genocide, what are the implications? (That is, I assume there are no legal punishments directly and all punishments would be implicit, such as diplomatic or trade isolation.)
Ask what implication has russia been aubjected to
The US will send them a couple billions.
It largely depends... but at the very least, it becomes official history, and that's not something you wash off easily... There is a reason why no nation flaunt their crimes against humanity even if they don't expect to be held account beyond reputational damage.
The UN will be very vey angry with. And they will send Israel a letter saying how angry they are!.
There are no implications the US was found guilty of genocide for funding deathsquads in the Nicaragua causing genocide
the punishment was they had to pay money they never paid the money till this day
And if Israel is found guilty, America would be guilty of the same crime again, funding genocide
So basically any and every country can and will sue each other, either for "supporting genocide" if they've sided with Israel or "supporting terrorism" if they've sided with Palestine. Or "failing to intervene against genocide/terrorism" if they're neutral. OK then. Good use of everyone's time and money.
Let’s just pretend that we don’t speak English hahahaha
Welcome to the modern world, now with extra lawsuits
I mean, it's not really that much of a hard decision to make when the signs of genocide are basically blaring from the gaza. Unfortunately, the West hasn't learned much since Rwanda and Yugoslavia
@@inaworldfulloftrashbagsbet2023 Or maybe learn how to build such accusation without being ridicolous.
@@inaworldfulloftrashbagsbet2023 "it's not really that much of a hard decision" it really is, genocide is a term only used a few times in history, it should not be used lightly
6:14 what does it even mean to say "migration concerns have been politicized"? It seems to me that the question of who gets to join your polity is not only a fundamentally political one, but in a democracy may be the single most fundamental of all political questions.
Yeah, these leftist governments have done that instead of just common sense immigration policy.
Should democratic decisions trumf private property right?
Should you and 1000 other people be able to decide if I am allowed to invite person X from country Y to live in my apartment?
@@JanBruunAndersen In the same way as they may decide whether you are allowed to store there explosives. With some ethnic groups those two questions appear even closely related...

Dont think so
was this a sarcastic comment, cuz god damn, was it good if intentional
Imagine that, when Germany presented its case at the ICJ, it drew so many similarities between what is happening in Gaza to the Third Reich.
Right, and yet none of the Hamas leaders responsible are even being held to account, everyone's just taking the easy path and assuming every drop of blood is on Israel's hands and that Hamas are all saints.
@@Acid2Test-zn7qo The entire HAMAS organisation has been condemned and labelled a terrorist organisation, the blood is already in their hand.
But Israel has been killing, bombing day in and day out, shooting at white-flag waivers, creating the worst famine.
Israel is a recognised state, unlike Hamas, but behaved worse than Hamas.
And I believe other people started to see too, similarities in terms of statements made by the official to those made during the Third Reich.
@@Acid2Test-zn7qo also because of October 7th, it doesn't mean that Israel should be given a free pass to inflict genocide on the entire population of Gaza. Unless you believe that is fine because these people are not white and not Jewish.
@@halimrahmanIf you really think that Israel has been doing worse things than Hamas, you need to do some more reading. Hamas is forcing non-combatants to help them, using human shields en masse, stealing humanitarian aid to use for its own purposes, and far more. Israel hasn't exactly been a saint, but Hamas is even worse.
@Acid2Test-zn7qo every single drop is on Israel's hand
What do you expect when you take people's land?
Its normal to attribute the different University of California campuses separately as they are separate universities not different campuses of the same university. In this case it was UC Davis which did the study on brain size.
Regarding the brain size story although I haven't read the study, I'm speculating that it's based on the US since it's a UCLA study. If it's based on US population, I wonder if the discrepancy between younger and older generation brain size has more to do with the lead poisoning that older generations were exposed to before the conversion to unleaded gasoline.
Brain are getting bigger but more people are getting dumber.
Ireland knows what it’s like to be oppressed by a much more powerful neighbor. They speak from what they have lived through before independence. Great job Ireland you should be proud. Then there is Germany, they should know what genocide is when they see it. They have done it themselves. Germany cannot just stand up for Israel while it see what it’s doing.
Same with South Africa tbh. In General it is noteworthy that most oppressed and indigenous people side with Palestine while most western former colonial powers side with Israel, often in a rather patronising way. There are exceptions and not all people are the same of course, but that tendency is undeniable.
Btw as a German, many people here think it is their responsibility to unconditionally side with Israel and it is kinda regarded as the ultimate victim, no matter what the situation is. If you don’t support Israel you’re attacked and defamed pretty aggressively. Wide spread Islamophobia does the rest.
Common German L for sure. Old habits die hard.
But these are different scenarios and you need to read more of the history of both.
For Palestine area, Islamists will show you a map of Jewish settlements and suggest everywhere else was occupied by "Palestinians". In fact, the area was mostly unoccupied as useless land with a small number of Arab settlements, as Palestine was neither a country nor a nationality. It was Ottoman land, albeit Jews have inhabited the area for centuries, and forfeit following WW1.
To avoid a Jewish state, Arab nations flooded the area with their unwanted and called them Palestinians with this term being only around 70 years old. Under the mandate, Britain could have handed the entire Palestine and Transjordan region (yes modern day Jordan) to the Jews, but tried to compromise with the Arabs, who refused every offer.
Conversely, in Ireland, the Irish government following 1921 and thereon full independence was concerned with a sizeable sentiment of rejoining Britain, so has "adjusted" the teaching of its history to create the view that the English/British subjugated the Irish. Note that prior to 1916, Ireland has its own government and elections with independence MPs never securing
The reality is that there was a landowner/wealthy versus poor divide across the entire British Isles.
For example, one might be taught of Irish being subject to indentured servitude, which was akin to slavery. In fact, everyone in Britain could enter this with the English making up the majority of course due to their larger numbers. And to suggest it was akin to slavery is insulting to genuine slaves.
Lastly, are you saying Ireland align with the values of Palestine over Israel? Theocratic zealousy versus democracy? The killing of gay men and stoning of women? A country that raped, murdered and mutilated to the cheers of Palestinians? I would think most people in Ireland would want such regimes eradicated.
@@A190xx nah I know what I said. I said it the right way and I meant what I said. You are looking at land. I’m looking at people being oppressed. Land is not oppressed however people are. Powerful nations oppress weaker states. In this case Israel has oppressed the people of Palestine. The powerful state of the UK oppressed the weaker state at the time known as Ireland. I know what I’m talking about. Fuck the land. I’m talking about people. People matter more than land. People can only be oppressed for so long till they respond. IRA was a response to UK occupation. The Islamist militias are a response to Israeli occupation. Things just don’t happen….
Well said.
I'm skeptical of the brain size story. I haven't read the original study, but I'm willing to bet there are some confounding variables, like increased sensitivity of modern testing and selection biases (particularly in the older populations)
Not qualified here but i heard that the large an organ, the higher the chance of cancer developing in that organ. This would be an ironic catch.
@@robinc5083 not many cancers start in the brain. going from 0.5% likelihood to 0.8% is not a big deal for most people.
Perhaps read it and then comment. To save you the trouble, factors like this were taken into account when presenting the uncertainty of the results. Either way, they conclude that brains have indeed become bigger over time on average, mostly due to a higher calorie diet and also other factors.
The effects that this will have were presented in a not so convincing way, to be honest and it seemed like they just wanted to make a catchy headline for publishing reasons.

They are negative that its not harsh ENOUGH not care about human rights
What does the ICJ have to say about all this
Israel said it's acting in self defense and they are complying with international law, but they didn't say they are working to prevent a genocide
Israel is abusing its “self-defense rights”!
They do not need to as they are not. However, Hamas is trying to commit genocide (stated within its constitution), which is why is accuses its victim of its own crime.
Yeah genocide. Population in Gaza quadrupled from 500K to 2M in the last 50 years. 🤦🏻♂️
Well, if there's a nation with a first hand historical knowledge of genocide by secondary means from an occupying nation, it's Ireland.
Yes they have first-hand knowledge in encouraging ethnic cleansing and supporting terrorism / irredentism against the native Ulster-Scots people. They're jealous that they have been unable to take over land that isn't theirs which is why they want to normalize October 7th.
The Ottoman Empire took over modern day Israel and Palestine around the same time as the uk started its plantations of Ireland.

It makes sense. The South Africans are likely getting pressure from their masters in China and Russia, who are hoping to salvage Iran's puppets.
If you are antisemitic you don't car about other genocides :) Ireland doesn't care about Ukraine, they give one of the smallest support to it from all the EU countries. They could just invite all Palestinians to their island and don't show off.

If they stepped in for every war there wouldn’t be any weight to their motion. You are doing nothing but classic whataboutism. You hate Putin but do the exact same thing he does.
Gaza is one of most denselly populated places in the world and yet has "only" 30000 casulties after months of warfare and many of them were active combatants. This is nothing short of astonishing as just look at urban battles of the past will tell you that by all means civilian casulties should have been in 100s of thousands and more and then those battles werent usually even a genocide. War is hell, it always was and always will be. No one can change these things
Why are you acting like 30.000 lives lost is not a lot? There are 2 Million People in Gaza, so almost 2% of the population have been killed. Should it have been more? Would 5% or 10% still be too few?It isn't a war. A war is a fight between two nations militaries, not a military bombing civilians.
With the money that Hamas puts into propaganda, how are you surprised that they can attempt their own genocide and then pull an Uno reverse card?
Why are you acting like 30.000 is not a lot? Gaza has a 2 Million Population, so now almost 2% of its population have been k****d. Do you think it should have been more? Are 5% or 10% still too few? Also this isn't a war. A war is a fight between two militaries, not a military and civilians they k**l
Tell that to all the naive westeners who are so disconnected from the brutal reality of war that they do not realize literally all (hot) wars, especially urban wars, result in civilian casualties
Casualties are around 100k so far and your arguement that it's not a genocide is that not enough innocents have died yet ? There was literally a point where Israel admitted that they estimated only 60 hamas killed while at the same time 10,000 civilians were killed
It is not clear from the video, if the 50% Europeans who dislike the EU migration policy, dislike the current one or the proposed one and in the case they dislike the proposed one, whether they consider it too harsh or too soft.

Win for Ireland.
Insane
I suppose the reason the Irish see things the way they do has something to do with their history. I remember the words from a song, “Oh, the strangers came and tried to teach us their ways; They scorned us just for being who we are”. The English let them starve during the Potato Famine, although the English were Christian enough to at least place a prayer for the Irish “succulent tuber” in the Book of Common Prayer! I imagine the Irish feel England had no more right to give Palestine to the Zionists than they had to take over Ireland as a piece of their own property. It took Ireland a long time to drive the English out, just like it took a long time for the native peoples of Palestine to drive out another band of marauding Europeans who thought the Holy Land belonged to them, the Crusaders.
The majority of Israelis aren’t European descendants…

Honestly, I think Germany standing up for Israel is one of the most "We owe you" moments of all time. Coming from a nation that could be considered a subject-matter expert on genocides against multiple people groups, its opinion should be deeply considered.
As a German, I assure you the German government has no clue whats going on.
Germany should know best that they don't owe anyone a favor in aiding and abetting the mass displacement of 2 million people and the inflicted famine that was put on top of that.
All that to say nothing of the increased aggression that is taking place against the West Bank where Hamas does not operate.
Given how many actual holocaust survivors and their families have said Israel is committing a genocide, I think this makes Germany look even worse.

Thats not what everybody demanded from Germany for decades.
Part of the reperations were also paid for, by giving Israel an discount on arms imports from Germany.

It has more to do with the military aid Germany is providing Israel to carry out its onslaught. It's silly cause it's nothing compared to the 3 billion a year from the US, but hey Germany isn't in their continent so it's easier to blame them instead of the US.
@@edgarorube3641 Part of arms provided to Israel are also reperations. Basically Israel gets a discount on imported arms from Germany and this then counts as a form of paying reperations to the state of Israel.

I genuinely feel bad for Germany with this. If they do ANYTHING they'll be called nazis again. It's sad that history is forcing them into siding with genocide because those people are the same ones they genocided in the past.

Please, talk about the dire corruption cases in Spain regarding the illegal commissions from masks during the pandemic from the ruling party, the PSOE.
