    "kawm ntaub kawm ntawv"
This is an old Hmong saying. Its literal meaning is "learn embroidery, learn writing".
Its cultural meaning is deeper. My mom said that it meant that we believe that clothing and embroidery is more important and that it lasts longer than ink on paper, therefore we always learn embroidery before learning to write. Learning how to embroider from my mom and how to farm from my dad. This was the Hmong life and we loved it.
My grandfather on my maternal side was an amazing silversmith. He was actually famous for his knives. He's since passed, God rest his beautiful soul, but we still own his knives and swords. They are still as sharp as the day he made them.
My father passed away from agent orange exposure due to the Vietnam war. He was an amazing farmer and talented in weaving baskets, but his true passion was music which he passed down to each of us whom have all ventured in music at one point or another in our lives.
I am biggo proud of my Hmong/Miao heritage.

Hmong are Miao, but Miao are not Hmong. Hmong earned that name because they fought the Qing Dynasty until the last of them made the decision to save their lineage. This is why we are Hmong. The name is earned, so there is a difference. The Hmong has also mixed with Southeast Asians and now Americans and other Nationalities because of fighting another war. In modern times Hmong already look different. There's no disrespect to our heritage, but also we shouldn't disparage our journey that led us to be Hmong.

I feel like chinese people like to separate us by saying that "Hmong" is just a subgroup of Miao. When in fact all hmong people know that all Miao people is just hmong people. Hmong people have different sub groups such as hmoob dub (in translation: black hmong , hmoob dawb (white hmong), green hmong and much more. This depends on the dialect you speak and also the type of clothes designs. Hmong people are not a sub group of Miao people like chinese people want to narrate. Miao people are hmong people. Chinese people don't want to claim it as so because miao people makes a huge portion of the population and if they are considered as one united group then it will be hard for the chinese to keep them segregated so that the chinese can continue to have control over them in the past and even now. The way that the chinese keeps them segregated is by saying that "miao enthic groups" consist of "multiple different ethics groups" and that "hmong people is a subgroup". Which is ridicules bc all miao are hmong people. We are all one with one history of the Han chinese distorting our history.

I am a Taiwanese and not supporting CCP, but that doesn‘t change the fact that Miao/Yao tribes were the original Proto Chinese date back to the time a war wages against Proto Chinese Han tribe.
We even learned about it in school.
One can even say 1/3 of 1.4 billion modern day Chinese can trace back their roots back to Proto Miao/Yao and hundreds of smaller tribes in Southern part of China.

@@merrick6484 Western media don’t teach anything about Miao or Hmong, so how can they be brainwashed? You’re a Taiwanese person who is trying to tell Hmong that they don’t know anything about their own ancestry when you only learned from books that are probably out dated and most likely not in depth enough to truly understand that Miao and Hmong are not the same people. Hmong and Miao are two different tribes. Just like the Dongyi, Qoxiong, Baiyue, Ahmao, and Hmub, they are categorized under the name Miao, but they are not Miao and are different tribes. However, they do share a brotherhood and sisterhood. The Chinese government did not want to recognize these other ethnic groups as their own tribes so they put them under Miao. They may have similarities in beliefs, traditions and language but each tribe also have different practices that makes them their own tribe. Your knowledge about Hmong and Miao are very little so why don’t you keep an open mind and try to learn instead of speaking from what you only learned from books that are outdated and aren’t in depth.

You're descendants of Hmongs on the border of Guangxi and Yunnan province--local White Hmongs and Green Hmongs are still living there today, there's no war against Hmongs during the period, Hmongs left the same reason as Han\Iu Mien(Yao) \Akha \Lahu left, lands in Yunnan and Guangxi are full of rocks and back then it could no longer afford more population, espeically after the Opium war in 1940s and Taiping Rebel in 1960s the situation in China was getting worse, the Qing empire was getting weaker and lost the ability to control the border , at the same period France colonized Vietnam and Laos, making Yunnan and Guangxi their sphere of influence that's when big migration began.
Actually many Hmongs didn't really leave China, they just moved back and forth between China and Vietnam/Laos on the border (Slash-and-burn shifting algriculture).
The only Chinese-ethnic who fled to South East Asia is the Hui people, they rebeled and wanted to build an Islamic kingdom but failed. Some Hmongs in Myanmar today are decsendants of Hmongs in western Yunnan who migrated to the Myanmar to escape the Hui rebel.
The most influential wave of Hmong migrations came after the rule of Emperor Guangxu as many of your words are modern Chinese borrowed words that only came into use after 1870s.

Secondly, Not only minority tribes like Miao/Yao have to move to southern China, even the big tribe like Han had to move south too.

The current day Hmong/Mien tribes don‘t feel like they are part of China, because they ran too far and crossed the national boundries. 😂 Otherwise, they are still the same Proto Chinese living in China from 3500 years ago.

3500 years ago, two proto chinese tribes had a fight by Yellow river in northern China. The winning tribe later call Han Tribe, the losing tribe move south and split into many smaller tribes, including Miao/Yao (Hmong/Mien). But all these tribes are still living right next to each other in the boundery of China.
When Northern Siberian Nomad tribes attack South, or when war happened in the north, all weaker tribes got no choice but to fleet.
Both the majority tribe (Han) and minority tribes (Hmong/Mien) had to fleet to Indo China and acrossed the border to avoid wars.
Those majority tribe (Han) in South East China still remember they are Chinese from China, but minority tribes (Hmong/Mien) forgot they are Chinese went from China too. 😁
Those minority tribesmen didn‘t ran across border when war took placed, are currently called Miao/Yao tribes, and still live in their forever home land, China.

Your ancestors likely came from WenShan in Yunnan province in the 1800s. The Miao label applies to both Hmong and non Hmong tribes. But your ancestors slowly fled central China over 2,000 years ago and little by little fled south then West with every successive conflict. Along the way many groups of Miao stayed in secluded mountain tops while other Miao groups continued to migrate. The Hmong are among the last of the migration. They last stopped at WenShan in Yunnan before crossing into Vietnam and Laos 200 years ago. The 2 varieties of Hmong spoken in the diaspora are not mutually intelligible with most Miao languages except the Hmong that stayed in Yunnan along the border with Vietnam and Laos.
