You're descendants of Hmongs on the border of Guangxi and Yunnan province--local White Hmongs and Green Hmongs are still living there today, there's no war against Hmongs during the period, Hmongs left the same reason as Han\Iu Mien(Yao) \Akha \Lahu left, lands in Yunnan and Guangxi are full of rocks and back then it could no longer afford more population, espeically after the Opium war in 1940s and Taiping Rebel in 1960s the situation in China was getting worse, the Qing empire was getting weaker and lost the ability to control the border , at the same period France colonized Vietnam and Laos, making Yunnan and Guangxi their sphere of influence that's when big migration began. Actually many Hmongs didn't really leave China, they just moved back and forth between China and Vietnam/Laos on the border (Slash-and-burn shifting algriculture). The only Chinese-ethnic who fled to South East Asia is the Hui people, they rebeled and wanted to build an Islamic kingdom but failed. Some Hmongs in Myanmar today are decsendants of Hmongs in western Yunnan who migrated to the Myanmar to escape the Hui rebel. The most influential wave of Hmong migrations came after the rule of Emperor Guangxu as many of your words are modern Chinese borrowed words that only came into use after 1870s.
War with Chinese Han in 1820, 😆, you should study abit more in history. 3500 years ago, two native tribes, two proto Chinese tribes lives by Yellow river had a fight. The Yellow Emperor (Proto Han Tribe) beat the other tribe leaded by Chiyuo (with Cow Horn). The losing side later splits into Miao/Yao and many smaller tribes like Hundred Yeu(Viet). The Miao/Yao were the proto Chinese tribe from northern China, and one of the common ancester of modern day Chinese. We are one family, and you should be proud. ☺
In 1820, the people of China spread to every country in the world, including many smaller tribes. (in fact, people of China move to other parts of the world long before 1820) Not only minority tribes like Hmong and Lu Mien.
Thank you for this video, it is pretty informative and educational. Hmong are a subgroup to the Miao because Hmong are the ancient civilization who lived on the yellow and Yangtze River before the flood and Hans invasion. After the Han invasion many of the Hmong migrated to the Miao kingdom and built a brother and sisterhood with them.
Firstly, Han and Miao/Yao were the proto Chinese Tribes living by Yellow river 3500 years ago. Both were the ancestor of modern day Chinese population. Secondly, Not only minority tribes like Miao/Yao have to move to southern China, even the big tribe like Han had to move south too. Because the Siberian Nomad tribes (Xionghu/Hun, Turkic, Khitan, Mogolians, Manchurian) are vicious and strong, hence the great wall was built. The current day Hmong/Mien tribes don‘t feel like they are part of China, because they ran too far and crossed the national boundries. 😂 Otherwise, they are still the same Proto Chinese living in China from 3500 years ago.
@@merrick6484 That is good context and informations and basically the same thing as I stated. But the Miao was already living in the southern part of China. Only a few Miao lived on the yellow and Yangtze River. The main ethnics that lived on the yellow and Yangtze were the Hmong and mien.

I’m a bit confused :( I’m a hmong girl (my family is from Laos) but does that mean I can identify and embrace the culture and clothing of the Miao and say it is also Hmong? And can I identify as miao if I am a hmong girl who’s family came from Laos?
The Hmong migrated from China to the mountainous regions in Laos in the 19th century before Laos was even a country due to civil strife. The Hmong in China, Vietnam, and Laos are the same ethnicity.
Let me put it this way, China is a big country (Bigger than USA in land mass, and almost the size of entire Africa) which consist of hundreds of native tribes. 3500 years ago, two proto chinese tribes had a fight by Yellow river in northern China. The winning tribe later call Han Tribe, the losing tribe move south and split into many smaller tribes, including Miao/Yao (Hmong/Mien). But all these tribes are still living right next to each other in the boundery of China. When Northern Siberian Nomad tribes attack South, or when war happened in the north, all weaker tribes got no choice but to fleet. Both the majority tribe (Han) and minority tribes (Hmong/Mien) had to fleet to Indo China and acrossed the border to avoid wars. Those majority tribe (Han) in South East China still remember they are Chinese from China, but minority tribes (Hmong/Mien) forgot they are Chinese went from China too. 😁 Those minority tribesmen didn‘t ran across border when war took placed, are currently called Miao/Yao tribes, and still live in their forever home land, China. In short, you are a proto Chinese, and your ancenter ran too far and across the border. 😆 Now, you are confused about who you are, where you were from?
Your ancestors likely came from WenShan in Yunnan province in the 1800s. The Miao label applies to both Hmong and non Hmong tribes. But your ancestors slowly fled central China over 2,000 years ago and little by little fled south then West with every successive conflict. Along the way many groups of Miao stayed in secluded mountain tops while other Miao groups continued to migrate. The Hmong are among the last of the migration. They last stopped at WenShan in Yunnan before crossing into Vietnam and Laos 200 years ago. The 2 varieties of Hmong spoken in the diaspora are not mutually intelligible with most Miao languages except the Hmong that stayed in Yunnan along the border with Vietnam and Laos.
My mother's DNA showed a lot of Miao of Guangxi, China. It makes me wonder if Zheng He used them as crew. Perhaps one of his ships crashed off the east coast of America and the settlers ended up living with Native Americans.

Stop thinking the word "China" as a country in ancient time. Let me paint you a picture. 3500 years ago, two natives tribes had a fight by yellow river in the north. The winner tribe later called Han tribe and hold their ground, the losing tribe later splits in many smaller tribes, including Miao/Yao/Viets, and moving few hundred km south. All these tribes are still living within the border of current day China, and living side by side for thousand of years. 238 bc, Strong Siberian Nomad tribe attack South, Han tribe defenced and ten of thousand killed, and they started building Great Wall against waves and waves of Siberian Tribes. The Xiongnu/Hun, Turkic, Khitan, Mongolians, Jurchen and Manchurians. I doubt Miao/Yao tribes were enslaved by Han tribe to build great walls. Han/Miao/Yao were the proto Chinese Tribes contributing to current 1.4 billion population. Some members of Miao/Yao minority tribes flet to Indo China and other countries to avoid wars, later forgot they were proto Chinese tribes, the native Chinese ethnicity.
@@jonathannorton960It’s complicated, but apparently some take issue with that designation and If that is the case I don’t understand why someone would insist on calling them Miao if some prefer another name.

These Miao/Yao minority tribes currently live in Southern part of China, besides them, there are 56 minority tribes in modern day China.
(in fact, people of China move to other parts of the world long before 1820)
Not only minority tribes like Hmong and Lu Mien.
Amazing job here- sharing the history of the Hmong aka Miao
Such a wealth of information.
Thank you for this video, it is pretty informative and educational. Hmong are a subgroup to the Miao because Hmong are the ancient civilization who lived on the yellow and Yangtze River before the flood and Hans invasion. After the Han invasion many of the Hmong migrated to the Miao kingdom and built a brother and sisterhood with them.
why don't you say that you are native european and live on the rhine river before the flood and white european invasion?
@@kellyma2992 so are you saying you know about the Hmong more than the Hmong know about themselves?
@@mabv688 yes, I believe you are correct.

The Hmong migrated from China to the mountainous regions in Laos in the 19th century before Laos was even a country due to civil strife. The Hmong in China, Vietnam, and Laos are the same ethnicity.
@@michaellee3502 Thank you 😄
Let me put it this way, China is a big country (Bigger than USA in land mass, and almost the size of entire Africa) which consist of hundreds of native tribes.
Those minority tribesmen didn‘t ran across border when war took placed, are currently called Miao/Yao tribes, and still live in their forever home land, China.
In short, you are a proto Chinese, and your ancenter ran too far and across the border. 😆 Now, you are confused about who you are, where you were from?
@@merrick6484maybe because they are nomads who always think that their homeland is where they were born.
