- Adventure motorcycle travel and touring on the Big Sur coast of California. I found a way to beat the tourists and have a bit of this picturesque place all to myself while riding my motorcycle down the Pacific Coast Highway. Includes the scenic Bixby Bridge, the Old Coast Road and riding all alone on the coast of Big Sur to Lucia. #motorcycletravel #bigsur

Sterling puts so much effort into these videos. He deserves so much more viewers.
Absolutely correct.
Amen 🙏🏻 to that!
I wholeheartedly agree. You don't have to be a motorcyclist to appreciate and enjoy Sterling's art.
Totally agree the work behind the scenes is countless hours, I know how long it takes to create 20 min video but RUclips algorithm has no mercy. People rather watch crap shorts and others doing stupid shit. That's the world today
The commitment you put into getting amazing shots is truly above par. Epic.
Sunday is funday when you upload a fantastic video like this 😊
I live near Big Sur further south in San Luis Obispo County. If you ever get a chance to take Nacimiento-Fergusson Road it’s the only road that cuts up over the mountain from Highway 1 to the 101. It will dump you into Fort Hunter Leggitt. Definitely worth it when it’s not closed due to storm damage. Thanks for the videos.
It's not the only road, just the only paved road.
Not correct. There is a road over to 101 near Cambria.
I rode Hwy 1 from Morro Bay to Pacific Grove in mid-January several years back, then returning via the same route. Very light traffic, no fog (it’s much worse in the summer), sunny and about 70 degrees each day. Amazing views, and just a spectacular motorcycle road. Winter is the best time to go if you catch the weather just right!
I rode Hwy 1 from Ft.Bragg to the 101 in Mendocino county this past May. Anyone who has rode that wonders what the big deal is about the "tail of the dragon".
I lived in Pacific Grove over 40 years plus a couple years in Big Sur.
Hiway 1 south now ruined because of too much tourism.
Virtually unknown until 1968 when the "hippies" invaded. It was down hill from there.
As a recently retired cameraman and a returning to motorcycling enthusiast I just gotta say how much I appreciate all the effort you obviously put into these wonderful videos. There are so many times in your videos where I go Dang, he actually went to the trouble to get one more good shot! You are a terrific cinematographer and a very good story teller. You deserve at least 100,000 subscribers. Really hoping this channel catches on.
So thank you.
Thank you so much!
Another work of art.
Thanks for sharing.
Another excellent video! I especially liked the song at the end, "Run Away."
I’ve driven and ridden PCH north to Laguna Seca but barely ventured into the beautiful hills due to time. I need to take more time and follow your lead, and of Zack and Ari ha.
A gem of roads and scenery taken to the next level👍
It's too bad that Nacimiento Road is closed. Nacimiento takes you to the Ridge Road or over to Fort Hunter Liggett and the road is a blast. Camping was allowed on the Ridge Road, but the forest service has pretty much shut down camping away from campgrounds. The view from Prewitt Ridge is incredible.
Beautiful video series Sterling..
Unfortunately so many people trash that pristine area.
Sterling: just wonderful! Driving along this highway is every motorcyclist’s dream. Hugs from Brazil!
Hugs from California back to Brazil! 🏐
Appreciate your new intro -- sharing who you are and what you're doing. Your choice of the roads less traveled demonstrates just how capable the GS is.
Remind me to tell you about how we got trapped on old coast road this spring- the rancher locked the gates on us and we were unable to leave.
Thanks for another beautiful episode, and congrats on escaping the teeming throngs. This is the original reason I bought an adventure bike (R1200GS) rather than a touring bike (R1200RT): when the pavement ends, 95% of the tourist traffic turns around.
Awesome...thank you Sterling! All the best from Canada.
Professional grade getting away from people travel skills! Well done! Those are skills I need to develop. I usually go places most people don't want to go and wouldn't even dream of trying to find my own slice of Highway 1. As always, thank you for sharing your gorgeous motorcycle travel videos. Time for me to go finish editing the video of last Friday's 411 mile ride.
😂😂 I did exactly the same, I drove all the way to the closure of the construction just to avoid to many people, but also the dirt road it was close by the time we went with my wife so I couldn't do it. But anyway, nice trip, awesome video and amazing adventure. ❤🤘
Great work Stirling 👍☀️☀️☀️
Well said, beautiful scenery, he did an awesome job
I live in California, and this is my backyard. I'm incredibly proud of it, and you did an absolutely amazing job of highlighting why I love it here so much. Thank you, Sterling. Thank you.
Terrific film.
Even though I don't have a motorcycle, I watch your videos because it gives me ideas about taking my 10 year old son on those unpaved roads with my Subaru Outback. Keep em' coming Sterling!
That is awesome!
Such spectacular scenery, thanks for another great video
Great video thank you very well done thanks for taking us along cheers to ya.
Stunning stunning stunning, what more can I say.
A real treat to watch.. these videos on par with movies..
It really is a beautiful road to ride. I do enjoy that ride all the way down the coast.
Wow perfect mix for the day ! 🤗
Hwy 1 was closed again in spring 24 but opened in may on the day i was there, lucky me. It was cool to see that scenery up the dirt road.😊
Brilliant! And that “Big Girl” song….. WOW! Never heard of her/them, but what a jam!
Good you rode this closed road. It's beautiful. Thanks for all your efforts and inspirations, Günter/Nürnberg
Another Good One!
Hadn't notice till you mention needing to stop to drink water.
That's so 1999...
What I do to drink water on the fly - put a bladder in the tank bag or tank pannier a/w drinking tube. To the tube bite valve I affix the retracting end of a Retracting Keychain. Attach Keychain to bag & Bob's UR Uncle-:)
Pro Tip - A Pressurized Bladder is even better because you can drink easier & you can spray water towards you neck (or were ever) to cool off on hot days
Gold Son GOLD
I think i will change my mind for going thru 101 in the summertime dam it is way to busy . Thanks for the tips and another great vid !!
Ive been there many times. Never gets old! Thank you for all your hard work showcasing this area ti others.
well said....Sterling does such a great job . Such amazing footage.....love that motorcycle too😊
What a great little perch next to that bridge 👍🏻
Perfect pace, amazing scenery and beautiful shots
Its a great ride especially during the week when there is much less traffic. I hope they open it up soon. Great video Sterling, as usual. Thanks.
Damn, you found it. My fav. Many trips across, alone. There was a movie filmed on it years back 1970 or so. Also it was used as a detour when PCH was closed for repair. Great vid Sterling. Some other roads across to the valley, King City and Hunter-Liggett. Nacimiento Road. Lot of great rides in the area far from the maddening crowd. Fairly good campground under the bridge. Rattlers, always be aware of their presence all along the coast and in the hills. Encountered many while working/living there.
Great film!
Old coast Highway was so great, I’ll keep that in mind when I head that way, thanks!
nice views thanks to that drone. it is amazing how easy it is sometimes to get off the crowd and find lonely places. just turn away from the known spots.
I can't wait to take that old coast rd. What a find. Beautiful footage as well. I really enjoy your work.
Nicely done! Thanks for taking us along for the Big Sur views. I lived in SoCal years ago but that’s one ride I didn’t make myself.
Looks so much like forest hills, really great get away
Beautiful footage. Drone shots galore. Love it. Did the coastal highway by car a few years ago and drove back behind the mountains, Good memories. I'm on my way in a few weeks for a multi year motorcycle camping adventure through all of the Americas. Have to stop and visit my parents first....and make my motorcycle license. 🤣 Never been on a motorbike before...and never went camping...its gonna be fun. I probably should start learning spanish. Would love to be in Mexico for Christmas. haha. Motorcycle & Camping newbie with low spanish skills. Gonna be fun. I will document it so everyone has the chance to see me struggle and fail and making heaps of new experiences. I really would love to stop at your little campground and get some travel advise from you. You are one of the people that inspired me to change my life and go on an adventure. I'm really grateful for the stories and footage you share with us.
Thank you.
Incredible photography, thanks!
Absolutely stellar. Cheers!
We traveled from SE Tennessee and rode CA1 from south to north last year (2022)a couple of weekdays in july. Very little traffic, except in the cities. Bucket list item.
You piced a great day and great location for a ride , loved the dirt road section . Pete Western Australia
What a fantastic road you found! 🙌 I’m putting the Old Cpast Road on my bucket list!
Good job sterling, looking forward to your next long motocamping series!
Great video’s! I loved watching them. Thank you so much 😊
Great trip.
Nice video. On the otherside there’s a great dirt road that leads to San Martin top with great views and more trails. Great place to camp and explore 🤙🏼
Really enjoying the new series and the new approach to your journeys
Another fantastic video. Totally professional!
What a beautiful find. Thats what its all about :)
Excellent road and content!
Very nice, I came N up through Big Sur but was going to fast and it was getting dark, Got to go back and take it easy.
Amazing road, and a great video. Cheer|
Awesome views
Amazing ride
Short but great
I like the new intro. as always thanks for bringing us along on your journey. i may have found a way to get out there this winter to do some coast riding. hope it works out. see you soon!
Fabulous ❤
Another good one.
Nice job Brother
Another excellent video
Yet again Sterling delivers the goods! 👍
Thanks for your video Just so happens your video ends at turn out about a mile plus south of Big Creek Bridge I lived on that turn out for 2 years in my camper while i worked for the state inspecting the retrofit for the bridge
Nice job!
that looked like a slice of heaven
NICE ONE!
Love it !
Marked and saved on Google Maps for next year. Hopefully, I will also be able to
” Run Away “
👍🏼🇺🇸
Sage advice... Check before going. I rode to Morro Bay, intending to return to the Bay Area on 1North and saw both sides of Hwy101 instead... Still moto-time well $pent😏
Awesome video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
I was on the south side of the closure yesterday. Just posted the video today as well😅
Great video, my kind of riding in my general playground area! I still want to try Naciemento-Ferguson road but it is right now in the closed section. Somehow I think there must be more ways to get over the hills over to 101 between Big Sur and Cambria. I'll be looking!
There are, but locals won't tell you.
👍👍 Awesome
Beautyful Sterling. I enjoy your videos every time. But tell me, what is name of this song in the end? Thumbs up!
Awesome job on the video. I’m going to start working “kerfuffle” into my vocabulary.
Inspiring, wish it wasn't 3000 miles away.
Fantastic video with the drone , great filming as usual . New locations that I can explore from Canada. Maybe someday with my Rally Ryker. question do you have a drone license and is it needed in the USA ?
I would have liked to have seen video clear up to the road block. Maybe part 2 is in the pipeline ...
Name and artist of the song that starts around the 6 minute-20 second mark? Kind of sounds like a modern, upbeat version of the old religious song "The World Is Not My Home," if so I didn't recognize the artist. Excellent song, perfect for this excellent video.
Did you have a stop at Nepenthe for a Manhattan, a la Jack Kerouac ?
Excellent video Sterling, well done 👍🏻
What tires do you use and with your style of riding how many miles do you get out of a front/rear? What would you say your pavement to dirt ratio is, 80/20, 70/30?
It's an excellent report. Excellent choice of music. Does anyone know the song that starts at 6:04? It's a great song. Thank you.
The world is not my home covered by Susan Raye original by Jim Reeves
I’m always interested to know the date or at least the month you’re travelling in and what the temperature is at the time if you could make mention verbally
That one was in July and it was probably around 70° in the middle of the day
did you check Cerro Gordo old miner city near Lone Pine Ca.?
Love Big Sur! I'm about to embark on a week long solo journey myself and looking to come back down the coast. As far as I can tell, there is no way around the closure, right? Something like the Old Coast Rd would be the perfect bypass since I'm on an ADV bike as well.
I have ridden that road at least 200 times over the years. You can ride it on a bicycle or drive on it with a boat of a Cadillac.. It is not a "rough" road.
@@jeffhildreth9244 Thank you! There was no way to get around the closure. I ended up taking small backroads from Monterey to Paso Robles and then picked up hwy 1 again.
Is big sur open all the way through now? Because we went the first week of August and the middle was closed. Due to landslide and road damage.
I Love your videos. I want to be like you :)
Are people allowed to walk down to that beach below the bridge??
I haven't done Old Coast Road in a long time. It is a nice ride. Is there still the large rocky gravel downhill? That's the only part that was tricky for me as traction was iffy for my mostly street tires. How do you get the moving drone shots while you're moving downhill in the dirt? Does your drone have waypoints? It's not super rugged, but I would think it would be a bit much to handle while riding without some form of automation.
I'm new to flying drones and I noticed your Bigsby Bridge shots all carefully toed the line of legality. NIce. From like Morro Bay up to Pescadero, you can't fly over the water, which is a bit limiting, but you got some great shots. I especially liked your lunch spot. Thinking outside the box. Most people would just drive by.
Brilliant idea to head down 1 since it's closed. Once you get south of Big Sur, I'll bet it's pretty empty most days. I wish they'd reopen Nacimiento Fergusson and the South Coast Ridge Road (much longer dirt road than Old Coast). They got closed a few years back when there was a big fire and have yet to reopen. Nacimiento is a nice paved road that connects to South Coast Ridge or goes over the ridge down into Fort Hunter Liggett, which is kind cool. Near the top of the ride, the view of the Pacific is awesome. I like to say that on a clear day, you can see Japan. You can't of course, but it's a good saying.
I'm still confused how any of his flights were legal. I'm looking at the air control map (Aloft) now and dropping pins on the places he flew, and unless he got waivers from the CDFW, I don't believe these were legal shots. I only say this because I don't want everyone to think they can go out and get the same shots without fear of repercussion.
@@MotoCampAdventure From Aloft: "The zones include coastal waters from the mean high tide line seaward to distances of up to 5 nautical miles offshore."
I think he's good. There is a wilderness area to the east, but Coast road doesn't get that close to it.
CDFW has no areas near Bixby according to their website.. The closest is Elkhorn Slough. If you look at their map, it's in the central coast region, but their regions block out the entire state. They don't own the whole state. Inside each region is a few CDFW areas.
It's certainly confusing for drone pilots. They need Aloft to show EVERYTHING. Not just airport zones, but national parks, state parks, county parks, city parks, etc... ANY area where drone flight is prohibited.
@@Ride_0n I have a part 107 and I'm confused on a regular basis. The whole coast is red from Monterey to Cambria. I still don't follow.
@@MotoCampAdventure I also have a Part 107. And I join you in the confusion!
From the high tide point on a particular part of the coast to 5 miles off coast is red.
In fact, that coastal no fly zone is all of Monterey County's shoreline. It stops at Pescadero.
However, the land is not red. Well some of it is, but more than there should be. The red in Aloft goes all the way to the edge of the highway. But if you read the fine print, the no fly zone is the high tide point. I can guarantee you that the shoulder near the Bixby Pull off is well above high tide.
As long as don't get too close to the water (or wildlife), you're fine. Of course, if it's a DJI drone, the DJI software will decide if you can fly or not. That doesn't mean it's correct, but it goes by the rules it knows.
This topic is probably better covered in a face book group for bay area drones or something.
Is that an extendable flag pole you carry?
But YOU are a tourist. You just beat the other tourists.😊 Actually I don't think I've see it so crowded along the highway.
