- This video details the upholstery of a Mission Style oak rocker from start to finish. Learn how to tie down springs, use wood wool for stuffing, and covering the seat with vinyl. Along the way, I show tips and techniques that I hope you can benefit from in your journey as an upholsterer.

I can't wait to do my chairs. I never did springs before. Thanks for teaching me.
What a craftsman! It is wonderful to see someone who still does upholstery like this.
WOW!! Sir, your craftsmanship is amazing. Your attention to details, special cautionary steps, workmanship and pure display of patience had me watching your video with undivided attention. Thank you so much for sharing your craft with us.
WOW ! - you are such a treasure. Thank YOU for teaching us. It is SO NICE having you as a resource. WELL DONE!
I love watching you work. After 4+ decades in the Navy and federal wildlife law enforcement, I have developed an interest in old hand tools, carving, backpacking, fly fishing, AND furniture restoration. Your videos are almost “zen like”.....in that they relax not only me.....but surprisingly, my Australian Shepherd as well!!! Plus.....I’m learning something! I’m just getting into the restoration of a Stratford Chair Company mission-style chair....and discovered your “channel”! You remind me of a younger Sam Elliott....you even have same midwestern speech pattern! Bravo-Zulu, job well done....on a well-produced AND instructive AND relaxing RUclips video!
😊very interesting and helpful. I’m a beginner. Thank you.
Absolutely- uncompromising craftsmanship explained clearly and didacticly. Thank you so much for this generously offered experience.!
Extremely helpful video and the only one I've found that explains and demonstrates everything in a clear fashion for someone like me who knows nothing of the subject. Also confirms my belief I'd better leave my job to the professionals because it's a true craft!!
So far these first two videos on the rocking chair have been more informative than any I have seen. I have a very old rocker in desperate need of being completely redone (chair seat and stripped and stained. I knew it would be quite a undertaking to do it properly and you have definitely shown me I was right about it being a big job but your instruction of the proper way of doing it is wonderfully informative and easy to follow. Thank you so much for all the time you put into sharing this with everyone. Look forward to the other videos in this series.
So 6 years later, did you reupholster the old rocker chair?
Excellent!!!!,how I love watching you work😁😁😁😁
Contact me via my website and I can tell you more about my background (as you requested a week ago).
These two videos are with out a doubt the most useful videos I have watched in years. Very well done and THANK YOU!!

I'm learning a lot from your great lessons.
Thank you very much!
You are blazing through this job. Its really helpful to watch your hands as you flow through. A lot of the important details get lost when the natural pace is edited away.
thanks so much for your time making the movie.I learned alot.movie is easy to watch. Ill be lookin for more!
Suas aulas são muito boas.
Parabéns pelo excelente trabalho e muito obrigado.
thank you very much I need it to see this for a project I have

Thank you!
thank you!!
nce ! i was amaze
I buy wood wool from Van Dyke's Restorers, Woonsocket, SD. Considering the cost of shipping it's best to buy a large quantity since the wool itself is inexpensive. Off hand I can't tell you how much it takes for a seat this size but 10 pounds goes a long ways. I buy 25 lbs but use it often.
Thank you sir for creating these videos. Very helpful! I am looking to reupholster our mission style love seats. Would you happen to know what tool to use when separating the side wooden frames from the core of the sofa?

You give a lot of helpful information and I enjoy watching your videos. I have an old fainting couch which folds out into a bed and trying to get some help and information on it. Have you ever repaired or redone one? If so I would to get help with springs in mine.
These are known as "bed lounges". Yes, I've worked on a few. Some had a wire mesh similar to "chicken wire" for support of the mattress. Contact me via my website for more information.
Love your work. Have you tried a crochet hook for intertwining your stuffing? Cheap tool and works pretty well! Thanks again for your videos.
My thanks back to you. Your crochet hook suggestion is interestingly good. The regulator I use is also an inexpensive tool which is a multi-purpose standard in the upholstery trade.
I've worn my ring happily since September 6, 1975
Hi, great video! I learned alot. Where would I find the replacement springs? I have one of these beautiful mission rockers to restore.

Kim-It looked like the wood wool was on top of all the bridle stitching. I missed exactly how you pulled that twine to tighten around the stuffing sections. I thought it was tight pulled tight from left to right. (Is that clear or confusing?)
yes nice"
if you don't want to use the straw stuff for padding what other option could you use instead?
phaegmoristic A person can use foam but it isn't as durable. Comfort and posturing isn't as good.
Where do you buy this product? The Excelsior Fibers....
you don't tie the spring tops into position, I went back to the beginning, to be sure, and to see if you had top lashed the springs, but you had the canvas over the spring s before I could see. Do you prefer the wood wool, to coco fiber,or horse hair.
Michael Leo Paglia Watch part one. Springing is fully demonstrated. Cocoa fiber is tougher than wood wool but more difficult to work with and has a scritchy noise in use. Horse hair is best.

I'm sorry I don't know your name. I need to know where you purchased the dry grass, as I have a possible job restoring an antique sattee.
Denise Thuman Try McKenzie Taxidermy or Van Dyke's Restorers. Ask for jeweler's grade wood wool.
Buckminster Upholstery thank you very much.
Do you have any suggestions as a substitute for the wood wool? I have a Smith Day & Co Early 1900's rocking chair I'm restoring. It had flat grass layer, horse hair, and cotton felt batting. I like to do this without the wood wool and hair. Thank You, your work is amazing!
Foam and dacron would be the only substitute I know of. You can probably replicate the look but not the feel. With rebuilt springs and foundation cloth you might be able to re-use the original padding. Clean it up with a fresh layer of cotton on top.
Ok, thank you for the help and thank you for sharing your work
What was that Material you used before the straw
Duck cloth / 10 oz. cotton canvas.
October bday? Mr.Craftsman
What is 'duck cloth' if that's what you called the off white material?
Cotton canvas.
@@Buckminsterupholstery Thank you for answer.
@@PrimarchEldarAutarch Its basically undyed jeans
What weight is your wood wool please?
The product I use, purchased from Van Dyke's Restorers is sold as "jeweler's grade".
@@Buckminsterupholstery Thank you!
Instead of the staw couldn't I use foam?
Posturing and comfort will be altered but yes, use foam if you wish.
I need to refurbish my sofa. Is there any way you could recommend me a warehouse which I can get the materials? Please send me the address.
I have a L shaped sofa so I need materials to refurbish it. Please send me an address.
