- After keeping tarantulas for years, I finally took the plunge and got my first curtain web spider a few years ago. And, you know what? I LOVE them. In this video, I'll talk about my experiences so far with 5 different Dipluridae or Curtain Web Spiders!
Животные
I always watch all of your videos to the point my girlfriend is like no more spiders 😂
Hahahaha That's awesome! Please apologize for me!
We have had several funnel species. None lived more than 3 years. Trying again with a sericata and today we got a D. Sanguinea. Never bothered with a waterdish after the first one. It just got webbed over and completely disappeared! I love these spiders. This my be my favorite video. I loved the feeding footage. Cheers!
Okay, so another vote for around 3 years. That's what I've been hearing from several folks now. Thank you so much!!!
I got into keeping tarantulas to cure my arachnophobia and it worked....to a degree. However, these are beyond my humble capabilities. Fascinating, beautiful and spectacular no doubt, and I never knew they could attain such a size, but they also terrify me. And I thought pokies were fast!😱
Yup, I totally get it. Even after I was over being afraid of tarantulas, these guys continued to creep me out for a while! :)
This spider is so friggen cool. I recently got a Bolivian Curtain web. Its Black and red and I love it.
I definitely have to pick one of those up!
I had a linothele sericata (ex megatheloides) sling. I had it for a month and kept it inside a box for feeders. I kept it humid and fed it 3 times a week. It molted ones and after 5 days, I found it dead. It didn't show any signs of diseases. I kept it inside a huge Terrarium (I had several enclosures inside from spiders with similar needs of Temperature and humidity) and it was the only one that died.
Man, I'm so sorry to hear about your sericata. I had a sp. colombia die on me a couple years ago for no apparent reason.
Ooooooo, love the blue female L. fallax!! She's gorgeous ❤
Isn't she gorgeous? She's about 5" and looks like a tarantula!
@@TomsBigSpiders she's absolutely beautiful
Wow those spinnerets are huge! They're as long as its abdomen! They are awesome looking! Maybe one day, once i have more experience with spiders.
They are almost like an extra set of legs! And that makes sense to me!
Awesome video man, I love seeing the research.
Thanks so much! I love these spiders, so this was a fun one to make!
They really are gorgeous and not so difficult to keep as people might think. Maybe, the most common mistake is to keep them to dry? Both "sericata" and "fallax" are gorgeous spiders that have an interesting development in colors. Very beautiful and interesting spiders that somehow have a misleading rumor to be "dangerous".
I agree, Ken! Those who I've heard having trouble are usually keeping them on the dry side. They are such awesome spiders!
I'm tempted. Although I'm more into fluffy T's I must admit they're gorgeous. 😮
I totally get that, Mike!
Hey Tom! Long time no comment. But these are my absolute favorites!
One thing I love to use with these guys is Vine branches I pull out of a chain link fence next to a river here in West Texas. Not sure if it's trumpet vine or what, but it's really pretty when you shuck the bark off. I'll lean some in their enclosure and they'll use the loops and bends to make web tunnels that look amazing.
Just wanted to share that 😁 wish I could show you a pic
Hey, Addam!!! Great to hear from you! That sounds like an awesome idea! I'm sure that I can find similar to that! Hope all is well!
Wow, they are so fast and pretty. I might consider one. Love the Barbarous growth enclosures too. Cheap and sturdy! Thanks Tom!!
They are soooo much fun to grow up and feed, Tina. And I love those enclosures, too! Thank you!
Thank you Tom , enjoyed the video.
Thanks so much, Ed!
That Thumbnail got mine. That is a pretty but terrifying spider!!
Hahaha That's awesome, Lori! :)
Here wee GOoooooooo!! Curtain web video!!!!!
Hahaha Hope that you enjoy it!
I love all things spiders. Keep em coming
Thank you, Odinsson!
Yet another great video. If the stars align, I will be including some sort of curtain web in my next order. Thanks Tom!
Thank you so much, Brian! Let me know if you do pick some up!
I really love how this guy says the cm too!
My pleasure! I figure that most folks use the metric system. :)
Hello great video information Tom
Thanks so much, Moon!
Still working on getting comfortable with tarantula husbandry. Not sure when/if I’ll cross over into true spiders but it is always fun to learn
Totally get it! It took me many years to keep other spiders.
These are gorgeous! I am fascinated with their behavior and those spinnerets 🥰 I could easily see myself keeping one or two of these, especially after seeing your interactions with them. Very interesting video!
Yeah, they have super huge buttfingers! haha If you ever pick any up, Michelle, please let me know! :)
I love my sericata female. the way she webs is insane! awesome video!
Thank you so much!
I recently bought a sling so yes you absolutely caught my attention :D
Perfect, Vivian!
Wow...they are really pretty spiders!
They really are! :)
I havè had a devil's curtain web for a while, they are must as amazing as any outher species truly beautiful a true jewl
I love that red and black combination! And they get HUGE.
Curtain webs fascinate me and I eye them on Tarantula Canada's web site from time to time but didn't know that much about them. This video is very helpful for providing some understanding of the little beasties, so thanks!
I'm so glad that this was helpful; that exactly why I wanted to do this one. Thank you!
Brilliant video Tom, super spiders 🕷 there Tom, fantastic webbers, I've often thought about getting one of these as I really like the Japanese funnel web spiders 🕷, may get one at some stage.
Thanks, George! And I if you DO get one someday, be sure to let me know! :)
You got me interested in these from watching you rehouse yours. I picked up 2 sericata slings from Fearnot about 6 weeks ago. You’re not kidding about how fast they grow. Loving them! Thanks Tom
That's awesome, Jeff! I avoided them for years due to misinformation, so I was hoping that some folks might give them a try if I cleared things up. :) I'm so glad that you like them!
They're definitely awesome spiders, although they do still pique my arachnophobia. I've got both the fallax ans sericata ❤
Great video as always, Tom
I TOTALLY get it, Jay! I felt the same way about them for quite a while! haha Thank you!
@TomsBigSpiders I always appreciate your take on spider keeping, because I know that we share a past with arachnophobia. ❤️
I would watch video of you talking about how your grass grows lol. Love all your content keep up the hard work.
Ha! Thanks so much, Joe! haha
Fortunately, I'm not most people and this is right up my alley. Marvelous!
Hey, bud! Man, I LOVE these guys and wish that I had kept them sooner. Just amazing animals! Thanks!
Very underrated species, I have a Linothele sericata and 2 Harmonicon oiapoqueae awesome spiders
Agreed...they are amazing! I wish that I had kept them sooner.
These curtain web spiders are hella dope. 👍
Agreed!
Hi Tom, great video and on point. They are fantastic spiders, and as I said in a other comment, my experience with these spiders is, that they are very shy, no defensive behavior, no bites, they will be about 3-5 + years old, with luck a bit more, but not as old as tarantulas or trapdoor spiders. They like it a bit moist and warm and in a big setup, they like high growing real plants and some wood for the webbing. They are not difficult to keep, but this is only my opinion. Wonderful spiders. Beautiful footage of your dipluridae spiders! Love to see them hunt!
And as I said, I can recommend you the Euagrus Genus, they are like little dipluridae but a little bit clumsy and also not defensive, with strong webbings.
Have a great week and stay save
Greetings Chris 🤘
Entire week I was consuming CWS content even your podcast episode on it. What a coincidence :)
That's awesome...good timing!
I got many those species I honestly love them
They are just amazing, Martin!
I wasn't sure about my linothele sericata at first, but now it's my favorite to show off!
I wish that I had picked them up sooner, Leah! I got offered L. sericata (megatheloides at the time!) several years ago and I turned them down. They are stunning.
How stunning are they! I loved this upload Tom, I am a huge fan of true spiders. I haven't kept these yet but have a feeling that will change after watching this 😆. That web n those colours, I need to experience these myself 😊 I imagine in person they are even more vibrant. I take alot of pics of my spiders and I know the camera never does them justice, the colours are never as vibrant as rl. Thank you for nudging me off that fence 😉 and as always you 2 great upload ❤
Thank you so much! I'm honestly so glad that it's been well received as I love these spiders and I was hoping that tarantula folks would hear me out about them. :) Yes, they are definitely more vibrant in person (although that blue female L. fallax really popped blue in the video). I'm so glad that you're open to keeping one now. :) Thanks again!
Just got 3 of these interesting spiders. I was only familiar with H. oiapoqueae but the dealer threw in a lin. Species Panama and a Fufius spec too. Ive been trying to watch care videos so i appreciate this one! 👍
I have a video on fufius species as well! I love mine...awesome little spiders!
Wow, these are gorgeous! I think I am going to look into these after seeing this video. The legs creeped me out in pictures, but seeing them move has calmed that.
That's awesome! I'm so glad that this piqued your interest in them! :)
These guys remind me of American grass spiders (Agelenopsis). They live similar lifestyles and display similar behaviors to these, but they’re considerably smaller and are true spiders as opposed to Mygalomorphs.
I kept a couple grass spiders in the past and it was a blast, especially around feeding time. Whenever I have the knowledge, time and resources, I hope to get a couple of these in the future. Sounds like a rewarding experience.
I can definitely see that! Grass spiders are super cool as well!
Nice wee Spiders Tom just love the webbing they do
Thanks, Michael!
@@TomsBigSpiders Your welcome
Tom!!! i appreciate this video so much you have no idea, I have my leinothele sericata sling and you helped me a ton with their care, She (hopefully a she ) is growing strong and fast about 1/2 inch now, Your knowledge is so appreciated, they are very fast but like u said in the podcast and previous videos they rather run and hide than to be defensive, once she gets a little bigger i will transfer her to the adult enclosure and she will stay there permanently to avoid multiple rehouses.
I'm so glad, Anabel! That's awesome that she's doing so well. Yeah, they definitely ARE fast, but the speed really doesn't come into play in a stressful way. Plus, they can't climb well, so that makes a huge difference. If that's how you rehouse, it will be super easy. She'll also get the chance to REALLY web up that enclosure. Thanks again!
I hope to see these and funnel webs more commonly in the hobby
Me too, Saiyan!
Same!
It's great to see you do a curtain web special! I love my Harminicon, but boy, is she shy!
After watching this, I've changed the enclosure around a bit and she seems a little happier. 👍🏼👍🏼
Hey, Darryl! Yeah, mine was pretty shy as well. They usually hide if disturbed, but I DO catch her out quite a bit in the morning and when I feed her. Feeding time is the best! Thanks!
i have a harmonicon too, she is usually visible, i have her in a 5 gallon and she usually sits at the entrance to her back web tunnel. im sure if i gave her a 100 gallon she would web it all and i would never see her again lol. very easy and cool spider
Wow! They're scary looking but very cool!🕷♥️⭐♥️⭐♥️🕷
These used to scare the heck out of me years ago!
Great video Tom after watching this I want to buy one I am a sucker for alot of webbing.
That's awesome, James! Thank you!
Beautiful spiders ! The blue L. fallax definitely makes me consider one... One of these days... Awesome overview of these, Tom. Definitely curious about the 5th ones how they'll turn out once fully grown.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
That L. fallax female looks so much like a tarantula! And I'm curious as well! Supposely, they reach about 3" or so, which is still quite large. Thanks again, Luc!!!
I’m still not sure about true spiders. You’ve got me over my severe arachnophobia and I now adore tarantulas thanks to you
😊. It’s the legs that get me too.
Hey, Bobbie! Well, these are not "true" spiders, so you're all good! Now, you can pick one up. ;) Hahaha
I totally get it...I've been there! :)
Yeah this spider is in the same family as tarantulas so it's not a true spider
I finally got a sericata. I see why many people like how they Webb up around their enclosure. I've enjoy watching your and Dave's videos.
That's awesome, Eric! I absolutely adore mine.
Never thought these guys got 7". Huge spider. That gangly look is creepy.
Neither did I. I was SHOCKED at how large the Oiapoquea got.
Got my first Curtain Web a couple of weeks ago (harmonicon oyapoquae 4cm)..not much webbing yet,but I guess they web more as they get bigger.....Great video BTW 🙂
That's awesome, Stuart! I just got a female, and she was in premolt, so she hasn't done a lot of webbing yet. Hopefully, yours gets going. Thanks!
@TomsBigSpiders good news!..mine molted 😁..had it's post molt feed and doing well!...keep up the good work!..by far my favourite T channel 👌
Nice intro brother! Long time not see actually! My RUclips doesn't seem to like you much lately. Had to actually search this video out. Anyways, you caught my attention with these guys and the OG's, or should I say "OP's" (Orphnaecus philippinus) lol. Glad to learn anything about these weird arachnids. My 2 sadly matured out male a few years ago and passed. Would love to snatch up a female if I could find one :)
Hey, bud! It HAS been a while! Sorry to hear that you got two males. These guys are super cool, and I figured that I could clear up some misinformation for folks who might be interested in keeping them. Hope all is well with you!!!
Would love to see you keep a Macrothele sp.
I have my eye on one right now, and I'm just hoping that it's there after Christmas. I NEED one.
Cool video, might be a bit fast for me 😂 Beautiful Spiders!
Thanks, Robin! And I totally get it. :)
Yep, you got my attention 😉
Hahahaha Awesome!
You should get a Latin firecracker tarantula (Kankuamo marquezi), spider shoppe has some available
I saw those. Unfortunately, I'll have to figure out which of my kids I will have to sell to afford one. haha
ArcticDreamer here: Yes, they are very cool L megatheloides and L fallax i have kept, and sp isla margeritha.
Funnelwebbs and Mouse spiders Missulena sp are cooler, but those comes close second!
Man, these new names for the comments are killing me! haha Great to hear from you, bud! I've yet to keep a true funnel web or mouse spider, so I'll have to reserve my judgement until I do.
I love a spider that webs tons. I got mine on a whim figuring - hey it's in the name! She's a Bolivian curtain web / Diplura sp rurrenabaque. I've had her for about 2 years but she's not that big. I sneak around at night to peek at my tokay geckos with a pen light and she's usually out sitting on top of her webs then too. She's maybe 2 inches or so? I'd love to get more of them in the future.
Hey, Denise! Supposedly, the ones sold as Dipulra sanguinae are the same spider as the Diplura sp. rurrenabaque (supposedly, really sanguinae aren't in the hobby). Time will tell! She sounds awesome!
Nice video, thanks. Definitely a spider I will never own
Hahaha Thanks, Mike!
These guys are so creepy that they’re cool. I love their huge spinners 💛
They have giant buttfingers. Hahaha
I had a Harmonicon oiapoqueae that was able to grow 7 inches. Im assuming it was a male due to it having a black triangle shape around the eyes on the caripus. I really enjoy owning this species.
I was shocked at how large mine got. I absolutely love them.
You had my attention but then my neighbor started screaming obscenities, someone farted loudly in the other room, and there was a...ok, yeah, still got my attention.
Hahaha The farts always throw me off. Damned juvenile humor. Some day, I'll grow up. :)
Hey Tom, I'm getting a Diplura Riveti Gold sling this week and im super excited! I just wanted to ask if you are still liking the barborus enclosures for these guys or if youve found something that you like more?
Dang, I haven't kept that one yet. I'm jealous! haha And, yes...they are all in those still and doing great.
@TomsBigSpiders I bought it from Joe Rossi on arachnoboards! I could only find one picture online of it as an adult so I'm excited to see it grow. And thanks for getting back to me about the enclosures :)
How big does a female linothele sericata get? I just make a big order of 10 tarantulas and decided to add in a funnel web🙂
My male just matured out at around 3", and the female is already larger than that. I would say 4" or so.
I would be interested in getting a Curtain web spider but they are pretty rare to find maybe just a webby T instead
That would work! And are you in the US? They're pretty common around here.
@@TomsBigSpiders ya im from MI, but didn't see them in places i usually buy from
@@kBitre Well, if you ever buy online, Fear Not Tarantulas, Hardcore Arachnids, and Spider Shoppe all have the Linothele sericata.
Just ordered a linothele sericata that's about 1-2inches, the only important piece of information I'm not finding is do I wait for it to start making a web before offering food?
Hey, Mike! That's awesome! And that's a great question. If you give them a hide and plenty of anchor points, they will usually do a bit of webbing over night. Mine all ate at that point.
@@TomsBigSpiders that's what I was thinking since it's small and it's still small enough to be offered disabled prey anyway
Hey Tom, do you do a lot of pairing ?
I do not. Unfortunately, with the podcast and RUclips videos (and a family and full time job), I just don't have the time. When I stop doing the RUclips stuff, I will likely focuse on more breeding.
@@TomsBigSpiders ok I have a mature male t apotheosis, figured I’d put the offer up. I don’t have any intention on attempting a pairing but would be happy to send him out.
All I Need Is Toms Big Spiders !!!! 😊
Awwwww...thanks, Candy!
Hi Tom and Billie 💙🩷
🕷️Hope you’re both doing well.
Nope, Never, Negatory, Nada, Snowballs chance in you know where.! 😂😂
I’m not a fan 😂
But hey, someone has to, hummm!?
I cured myself of arachnophobia, but, not that cured from these. 😂😂😂😅
Have a great weekend you two 😊😊xx
So...you're saying that there IS a chance?
hahahahahahaha
No worries, Joanne! I hope that you have a great weekend as well!
@@TomsBigSpiders Hahaha 🤪
I still watched it all. Your video was amazing though 😊🕷️🕷️
Where did you purchase your curtain web spiders?
I got some of them from Hardcore Arachnids and others from Fear Not Tarantulas.
@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks bro! I really appreciate this video as well. I’ve been considering it for awhile; I think it’s the perfect pet spider for me.
Hey Tom I sent you a question through your website, im curious if you got it
Hey, Cody! Let me check...I didn't see anything.
Ok I sent it again
Not sure if this was asked already, but wondering if they have crappy vision like tarantulas?? Lol
Hey, Natalie! That's a great question, and I'm honestly not sure! The seem to detect movement on their webbing to find prey, so I would guess that they wouldn't need great vision (as apposed to huntman or wandering spiders that spot it). I'll have to do some research!
@@TomsBigSpiders no worries! I was just curious 😉
All these Latin names for spiders. I want them to be what they are. The black one with the golden knees. STOP the bird eater name completely. They may be more venomous but they do not go after birds that were 40 times their weight. The docile T with orange and black colors love it or leave it, please don't make it a Halloween trick on this misnamed tarantulas.
Love your amazing collections Tom. Hi Billie have a blessed and peaceful weekend.
Hey, Joyce! How are you feeling? I actually prefer the Latin names only because the common names can overlap and be confusing. And yes...the birdeater thing needs to go away. haha EVERYTHING is a birdeater these days. As always, thanks so much. Hope all is well!
@@TomsBigSpiders I know it is easier to classify with bio names always in Latin or a variant thereof. I am walking without a walker and only use my cane when I go out. I have been healing very nicely. Say thanks to Billie. God bless you both.
@@JJDigitalartStudio Glad to hear it; that's fantastic! And Billie says hello!
Hi tom
How are you doing, Mitchell!
Totally off-topic, but I really have to get your response to the most recent Dave's Little Beasties pairing video (Neoholothele incei ruclips.net/video/Bpwd8W9XS0c/видео.html at about 17:15) where right in the middle of sexy time the female decides she needs a drink from her water bowl. Hilarious. Things were going along fine and she just veers off to the side and right into her water dish. I think that might be a first on camera.
Hey, when the lady works up a thirst... haha
You told us everything except how they taste
Like shrimp.
Nope, it brought out my arachnophobia. Can't do it. Lol
Sorry, Pepper! I totally get it!
The word True spider is in my opinion pretty dumb. They all goes under the category spiders, they all got 8 legs. But ive thought of some of them myself, but took some OBTs instead. These spiders was quite expensive.
Well, it's just the layman's way of differentiating the primitive species from the more evolved, shorter lived ones. Good point, though.
Awesome! I really want one of these, any one is fine... CB H. carolinensis slings to trade, if anyone sees this ;)
Let me know if you get one, Jason!
@@TomsBigSpiders Ok! I"ve almost ordered them a couple of times but it didn't happen lol. Same with huntsmen.
@@TomsBigSpiders You kept H. carolinensis yet? I don't remember seeing any wolf spiders.
