    To answer the unknown, two years later, the 1/2 inch is 20 bones at Lowes.
    Personally, I made a command decision to buy the set on ebay. I paid $5.00 more than the Lowes price for the set, but I didn't have to drive to Lowes. But then, I got the 1/2 inch from the same seller on ebay for 15, whereas it is 20 at Lowes...so I got my 5 bucks back.
    I do not love having spent 60 bucks on the full bit set (including the 1/2). It's not what I usually do. But of I no longer need a separate set of bits for thick metal, this will be well worth it.

      @@FixitFred they wear out eventually just like any of them will but they cut amazing. We do a lot of custom fabrication work and drill 60-100 holes a day in steel and aluminum and they are the best we have had. They are lifetime warranty not to mention so you don't sharpen them you just exchange them for a new one. Our Matco rep comes by every week and we have no warranty issues when they dull. They cut a perfect lazer like hole thru 1/2" plate steel with no issues. They don't walk and you don't have to drill a pilot hole first.

      My only issue with the MATCO hyper step bits is only the larger size ones are actually warrantied, not the smaller ones but they definitely are some amazing cutting bits. If you think about it the larger sizes are higher in price so replacing the smaller ones out of pocket might not be too bad, I am not sure of the availability or price of them individually however.

      I like cobalt bits as well but me personally i actually prefer molybdenum bits at least in a cordless drill idk about drill press as i dont have one for the jobsite. They are cheaper and i feel like they last longer. Tough to say idk if one drills faster then the other or not. Also cobalt breaks easier cuz they are so hard. Molybdenum resist against like 4500 degrees while cobalt only resist against like 2800 degrees. I get drill hog off ebay and they have the option for both. I have a 29 pc set and then also have a big drill bit box organizer more made for a shop but mounted in my box truck and drill hog offers buying individual sizes as well in 6 or 12 packs depending on the size

    coming from a metallurgist POV that seems more of a color left over from a heat treat and tempering VS a coating. its not a TiN coating "Titanium nitride" or a TiAIN coating "Titanium Aluminum nitride" i don't know of a common coating on a twist drill more wear resistant than TiAIN coating. this seems to me to be marketing wank. ill have to pick up the 1/2" twist drill and even put it against an uncoated norseman 1/2" twist drill.

    Hello STR, I use Spyder 5/16 bits to drill 5/16 steel all day and each hole takes about 12 seconds. Your drilling speed is far too fast with too little pressure. You are "work hardening" your steel with your high speed and low pressure. Despite the fact that you are work hardening your steel, the Spyder still does the job, testament to how good the drill works. You may think you are drilling with a lot of pressure although you are not. How will you will know you are applying enough pressure, the ratchet will engage from the start, and you will not see any smoke....no heat. I am not an amateur, I am an aerospace engineer for over 40 years. Try it, you will like it.

    Drill bit coatings are only useful in long production runs where you need the lubricity to help prevent chip load in the relief, other than that maybe to help prevent rust in humid work environments?
    Coatings wear off pretty quickly using hand tools with high runout, and now you are relying on the base metal. Cheap drill bits are made from cheap material. Coatings are pure marketing for the ignorant. Something to consider as well, drill bit runout, drill bits shrink fitted into proper hex shanks are going to have slightly more runout than a properly ground drill bit, and worse having a "cast" hex index is laughable. What a joke.
    Also, using non-masonry designed bits in an impact wrench. Yikes.

      You must be a machinist or engineer...and I say this with all due respect. It's obvious you understand cutting tools along with the metallurgy. You are correct, coatings are coatings. No replacement for a full index of cobalt bits or high-quality high-speed bits. With that said, as I mentioned in the video, not many people are going to pull the trigger on several-hundred $$ for drill bits...especially shopping at a big-box store. So, I take in to consideration this is a $40 kit, Made in the USA, and they seem to cut really well. I also mentioned the cast aluminum as a concern, but they'll probably last a few hundred cuts, if taken care of. They are said to be impact driver ready (I said "Impact Wrench" a couple of times, but I meant Impact Driver), and they worked quite well with the impact driver. Albeit, you should (as I did) keep the impacts to a minimum when using the impact driver, so it's only using the rotating motion for cutting. Thanks for watching.

      are we mixing up impact and hammer, here? Hammer pushes forward (so, masonry); Impact twists (everything else).

    • @illestofdemall13
      @illestofdemall13 4 года назад

      A hammer drill is for drilling into masonry, not an impact driver. Impact drivers are for driving fasteners and many drill bits are rated to be used with impact drivers.

    • @Doichable
      @Doichable 4 года назад

      @@jasonjayalap I was not mixing them up, I stated Masonry bits because the shank portion of the masonry bit is designed to take repeated "impacts" without breaking, as well as the cutting edge. Drill bits, taps, endmills, etc are all at different varying degrees of hardness, which makes them brittle. Like soft taco shells vs hard taco shells, one is tougher and is less likely to break by being "soft" while the other due to its hardness when flexed is liable to break easier.

    It is GARBAGE that they say its 100x longer when it is not AND they wont even tell you what the coating is, It is NOT dlc. All bits at this point in time can and should be dlc coated or just at the tip, it would work and last alot longer and over time they are not turning crappy and rusty and dulling.

    Drill tip? You mean a chisel tip? Or a brad tip?

    • @ObservationofLimits

      Ya. If you use bits right, plain old HSS bits from Chicago Latrobe are fine for most jobs. Norseman makes quality bits.
      And coatings are only good until the cutting edge wears then they’re just plain HSS after resharpening.
      Coatings are also only really necessary for metals like aluminum that will gum up and weld themselves to the edges and the flutes.
      If you have hard materials and or deep holes, invest in cobalt bits (high cobalt like m42).
      Or if you’re not an idiot and can be careful, carbide bits. In an average year I end up having to drill and extract 1,000+ hardened button or flat head cap screws (m6 and m8 because people like to use ball end drivers on a fucking impact on cover screws that only need a little tighten and not gorilla foot*pounds of torque). Over the whole year I’ll probably only have to use 2 carbide bits, and 99% of the time they fuck up because I’m squatting inside a machine covered in oil with all slanted surfaces and slip.

    I’m sorry, but I am not impressed the second I heard those three words, cast aluminum shanks, I knew these are cheap, marketing focused, garbage. Plus, wth is up with selling the 1/2” bit separately?That is just straight greedy and lame man, for real. Also, “Made In The USA” is at an all time low when it comes to wow factor these days. I actually am starting to prefer certain things made in China over some stuff made in the US, and it makes sense. The same American thinking that outsourced all of the labor to China in the first place didn’t go anywhere, it’s still here, ready to start producing stuff in the US again, only as cheaply as possible this time so they can claim they made it here to score a quick buck. Plus, China has been getting good at this stuff through all these years of manufacturing and what not, if they haven’t already, they are going to start straight dumping on us any day now, hard. I’m 95% sure they already have though hahahha

      The shanks are cast zinc, not aluminum- they have been around for years and hold up great on Kobalt, Craftsman, etc. Chinese factories do not have as high quality control standards or materials, thereby making it cheaper for them to be imported. Drill bits break, but most US-made bits are better. Some European and Japanese manufacturers make excellent products as well.
