- Hollywood and Broadway star Angela Lansbury, who earned Five Tony Awards and three Oscar nominations, and who scored 12 Emmy nominations for her role as mystery author-sleuth Jessica Fletcher on the TV series "Murder, She Wrote," died on October 11, 2022 at the age of 96. In this interview that aired on "Sunday Morning" December 6, 2009, Lansbury talked with CBS News' Katie Couric about her unparalleled career on stage and screen.

My late husband said that Jessica Fletcher had to be the most prolific serial killer on tv. When I asked him why he said: “haven’t you ever noticed that there is ALWAYS a dead body around her and she is the only one that solves the case. She always pins it on someone else!” 😊 I loved that show and still do. She was the most phenomenal actress around. Rest In Peace Angela Lansbury. Break a leg in Heaven. ❤️🙏
Here is what happened when she dipped her toes in the theater arts.
1. Originated the title role of Mame in 1966 ( Tony award #1)
2. Originated the role of Countess Aurelia in Dear World (Tony Award #2) in 1969
3. Played Mama Rose in a 1975 revival of Gypsy ( Tony #3)
4. Originated the role of Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd (Tony #4) in 1979
All of the above were for Best Actress in a Musical.
5. Played Madame Arcati the medium in 2009 revival of Blithe Spirit ( Tony #5) for Best featured actress in a play)
She was nominated in the Best Actress category twice more, for her work as Leona Mullen in 2007 in Deuce, and in 2010 for Best Featured actress in a musical as Madam Armfeldt in A Little Night Music
She got her Life Achievement Tony award (Tony #6) just this year!
She also won 3 Drama Desk awards, 3 Outer Critics Circle (OCC) awards, and the Laurence Olivier award in 2015.
That's a lot of dabbling!
Deserved an Oscar along the way, too. Did Angela ever win an EMMY?
She choked up when dicussing her sister's illness. What a wonderful, empathic, gifted person. We need more like her on this earth .
I was fortunate to see Miss Lansbury on Broadway in Mame, Gypsy, and twice in Sweeney Todd; these are truly memorable performances.
She will be very much missed. A huge talent.
My hero, not just on stage, but - most importantly - off.
An exemplary human being of impeccable class. A true professional. Angie knew what mattered most in life, worked hard to achieve it, and never complained.
As we can see here, she never took a thing for granted.
The times I saw her perform live were among the greatest nights of my life. I was lucky enough to meet her, and she was every bit as gracious and considerate as you see here with Katie Couric.
Her shadow will continue to loom for a long time to come.
What's a joy to have Angela Lansbury in our lives in the performing arts. Awesome talent and overall good person. She would be forever missed. Rest in peace and power ma'am.

Lucky to have seen her a few times on stage. Just like the Queen who also recently passed at 96, let's not forget what a 'babe' she also was in her youth. Just look at that young woman in her early H'wood films...Dorian Gray, Gaslight, National Velvet, The Harvey Girls...she looked like a Gibson Girl, just stunning, and got an Oscar nomination first thing out of the gate in her debut. Remarkable actress.
