Was such a great rivalry - as an eagles fan, every time we played Sydney you just knew it was going to be epic!! As much as 2005 hurt, it was fitting that both teams won a flag out of that era.
I will be very surprised if we ever see a rivalry this close in footy again. As an Eagles supporter, it was an emotional nightmare watching games against the Swans. So much tension, you never felt safe at any point in the game.
05 QF: Cox marks in Sydney left pocket to win game. 05 GF: Cox kicks it to Leo Barry who marks in eagles left pocket to win game. 06 QF: 84-85 Swans win. 06 GF: 85-84 Eagles win.
@@dawski4697 I think it is, they were all very close matches, one team didn't want the other to win, the other wanted to win very badly. that is a recipe for a rivalry in my opinion
2006 Qualifying Final has got to be the best game of the lot. A proper see-sawing game of footy, and Sydney come away with a 1 point upset win in enemy territory
There is this basketball team we always play called Exies Acmy and the margin is almost always 1 point. We’ve drawn with twice, won by a point twice and lost by a point twice... all in the last year and a half. Kind of like this AFL rivalry.
As a swans fan each one of these gave me heart attacks. I’ll take the 1 for 1 premierships. I got to go to the 2005 GF as a young lad, Was very exciting football and to witness Leo’s mark.
Both Grand Finals were amazing, but i would have to say 2005, as it was what ended the 40 year drought for the swans. But both teams were amazing on the field. They are both one of my fav Grand Finals of the Decade, from 2001 to 2010.
It was actually a 72 year drought. The longest of all time in the history of the game provided St Kilda win break their long Premiership drought in the next 22 years.
Hard to say. 05 was a lot closer throughout the entire match. The biggest margin was no more than a 3 goal lead Sydney's way. Defintetly a lot more tactical than 06 as well. 06 on the other hand was definitely a more entertaining match even though West Coast dominated half of it and were up by as much as nearly 40 points at half time. As soon they shifted down a few gears, it allowed Sydney back into the match when they should have been dead and buried. This would the same mistake Collingwood would make 4 years later against St Kilda in the drawn Grand Final. From the beginning of the 3rd Quarter onwards Sydney all of of the sudden strung into life where there wasn't any for the first half of the match again much like St Kilda 4 years later. As soon they closed the margin and controlled the game, West Coast were holding on for dear life once again a lot like Collingwood in 2010. Ultimately despite a huge lack of goals in the 2nd half on the Eagles end, they did just and I stress the word JUST enough to hold off the Swans who despite their fantastic efforts, simply weren't efficient enough. While they scored many goals to close the gap, they also missed many. West Coast were simply far more efficient with less chances where it mattered most. Conclusion would be 05 was a lot closer and more tactical. Where as 06 was more entertaining to watch and had a thrilling finish where even you at home watching the match you never knew how long the game had left. Thank you very much for the thrilling and suspenseful 5 minute warnings Channel 10.
And not to mention the nick Davis game against Geelong was among the best games in finals history. Was a great time in footy history and I’m a Brisbane lions fan
I can't imagine something like this happening again anytime soon. Incredible

Great comment. As a Swans fan it probably wouldn't feel quite right if one team had won both lol

That will add so much more to the game though
@@Nightwolf-77 Close but never played each other in two Grand Finals during the Kennet Curse era.
@@taliamason7986 Still. It lasted much longer
Well of course you won't because 10 dosen't have the broadcast rights anymore.

This rivalry and the Hawthorn vs Geelong rivalry have been the best rivalries this century.
Plus the Collingwood Richmond and Brisbane Geelong ones too
‘Hawthorn vs Geelong’ it’s not a rivalry if you don’t beat the team

2006 qualifying final was one of the best games I've ever seen
So. Many. Classics
I was at all of these games at Subi and both grand finals, 2005 and 2006. Epic 3 seasons of games. 💪🦅
2006 Qualifying Final has got to be the best game of the lot. A proper see-sawing game of footy, and Sydney come away with a 1 point upset win in enemy territory
I reckon the 2006 qualifying final was the best game in this rivalry. Seesawing battle and of course the mickey o moment. From an eagles supporter.

They also had a close game later in 2007 round 16, eagles winning by 2 goals.
Some footy fans don't get a chance to see a rivalry like this nowadays. I'm so glad I was 13 when this happened back in 2005, it was great footy.
This and playing the Crows was heartstopping footy for Eagles fans

It's over 5,000km from Perth to Sydney, in either direction - if you have to travel that far, of course you're gonna try extra hard...
I remember this like it was yesterday
One of the greatest footy rivalries, we'll take the 4-2 win though :)
This is awesome! Similar to the Hawks vs Cats rivalry.
Just better
@@wevans1400 Nah mate, Hawks v Cats between 2008 and 2022 was a far better and long-lasting rivalry of close games.
Next game in the rivalry was Cousins comeback game july 2007. Eagles won by 12
Watch the umpiring in this and compare it to 2019, Sad times.
This should be titled “Dean Cox intercept marks compilation”

40 year drought?! Don't think so!

Brilliant
Which grand final was better: 2005 or 2006?
2006 Because it was literally 1 point difference even though that may be a bit biased considering I am an eagles supporter
2005 had the better final few seconds. 2006 was a much better game in general.
2006 for the game, 2005 for the ending

Sampi was held
Took years off my life.
Good to see Sydney chocking. Again 😂
and 2 of them were grand finals...

Jacob Sedgman that’s got noting to do with the west coast/Sydney rivalry 😂😂wrong video
jay macleod yeah I know, I was just stating that that finals series in general was amazing. I clearly said the Geelong game
@Soussy all the action was in the last quarter yes, but that last quarter was unreal
What about Barry Hall punching the eagles player in 2008?
No games in sydney, if there was eagles probably get pumped
Uhh round 1 2007 was in Sydney and West Coast won by a point. Didn't get pumped did we?
The West Coke Eagles
2005 was the worst ever grand finale
