The reason the step is wood is so that it flexes.
Be careful about having inflexible stepping.
Replacing it is easyer than cracking your hull .

Unbelievably beautiful metal work. Mattis can find work at any boatyard he wishes.

Met een boot moet een eigenaar eigenlijk alles zelf kunnen, zeker als je er mee op pad gaat.

Did you put something on the mast before wrapping it in fibreglass? 'Cos I was like "oh, that is so going to be trouble" on the assumption that the resin would have bonded to the metal (especially if it was epoxy...).
That's some beautiful work on the steel. All the more so since (I assume) it was all done using basic tools.

Good work. You don't mention inspecting the chain plates for integrity or crevice corrosion (probably number 1 cause of dismasting on older sailboats) or replacing the standing rigging?! I hope that you did! Again, good work.

Thank you Mark for your comments. We replaced the chainplates and the webs they attach to, and all standing rigging in Dec 2016 before we left the UK in July 2017.

Excellent, now I feel better for you. It worries me how many cruisers I have met over the years (and oceans of the World) who buy older vessels and don't understand the importance of inspecting/replacing/strengthening the integrity of the keel bolts, rudder post, chain plates and standing rigging! These 4 systems literally keep you alive when things get wild in the middle of an ocean crossing.....

@@markmuller8829 Absolutely! There was no way we were going anywhere without checking these first. Once we bought Jingo in March 2016 and sailed her down from Chichester to Plymouth, we made sure all of this was done before getting her back in the water. She finally went back in the water (for our second sail!) 15 months later, in June 2017.

We put an offer in for a contessa 32 ( subject to survey) yesterday and has been accepted. Will know at end of August regarding survey. Excited.

I bought my Contessa at the London Boat show in 1981 (Blazeaway) when I went to sell her my lovely boat had osmosis. Fantastic boats, good fast but safe cruiser. Good luck with your new purchase you will enjoy it. I graduated to an Oyster heritage (Velindra) which is now in Australia then to an Oyster 406 (Muskrat) now somewhere in the Greek islands. Now unfortunately boatless!

The survey came back and the boat has some osmosis, which is a bit dissapointing, the owner lowered the price a bit but the work to carry out the job potentially could cost 7500 pound uk. Ive kind of been put off now by the survey report, but people are saying its pretty standard to find osmosis in a 40 year old boat, you kind of have to take the action necessary to grt rid of it or to stop it from spreading and then you kind of live with it??? i dont know as never brough a yacht before......

Mine had some show up on the waterline last year, Just like Jingo. How can God explain that, on a forty year old boat that I have owned for 25 years? £7,500 is a wind up though, if you buy it, get the best price you can and live with it. Well that's my view.Grand video.

Why not fill the mast step with reinforced concrete?
