Emily, your art is so beautiful and honestly, your art matches your very nice and calming personality! It's like you draw from within, I feel like, and you can feel personality even in these sketches. Even the stuff you mention that you don't know/understand yet, you know how to recover from your art mistakes and fix the painting in a way to make it work and it just looks so nice. You seem like a very genuine person is all, keep up the videos! :D
Thank you so much Jessica for such a beautiful comment 💛 It made my day!! It warms my heart that you feel that way about my art and me as a person :-) More videos are coming very soon!
These came out. Wonderful Emily! I say the kiss method is keep it simple, smarty! It is hard to believe this is a new medium for you. You really do handle it very beautifully.
damn, thank you for opening my eyes to making my own gouache paintbox palette.... mixing your own secondary colors in there is such a great idea as i don't own too many colors yet (also squeezing out paint onto a palette every time, especially if you work smaller and end up putting too much is a hassle lets be real)
An air-tight container is a game changer! I think there is a medium you can add to the paint to keep them wet longer, that I might try as well. Thanks so much for watching Vimbles! ❤️
I am a watercolorist getting into gouaches - and I’m going to add some violet to my palette, it’s so pretty and I love what it’s doing to the portraits you’re painting! Thanks for sharing 😊
You can also add more gum Arabic binder to almost dry to dry gauche and not over water it down. It’ll be thinner paint but the binder will keep the colors from feeling muddy, dull, or chalky. Love this video💕 your work is beautiful
This is such a great tip, thank you! 💓 I'm definitely going to look into trying that. I've also heard there are retarder mediums that can be added to gouache that slows down the drying time. Thank you so much for watching 😊💕
Aw I'm so glad this video found it's way to you! Gouache is both super fun and challenging haha, but I'm having a blast learning about it. I love how instant it feels, if that makes sense 😅💛
I’ve watched this video so many times!! I would love it if you could do a tutorial on how you paint faces with gouache 😅 but I really love you art style and the way you paint!!
Aw that's awesome! I recently posted another gouache heads video on my channel, if you want to see more 😊 I'm hoping to make a gouache portrait tips video soon 💛 Thanks so much!
I can't explain why but at around 8:00 the old man you were painting suddenly looked super Italian. Like more so than at the end. I really love your style and I'm trying to paint with a bit more brush strokes, like more defined edges and harsher brush lines and you do it so well!
Ooh I kinda see it! I have Italian in the family so maybe I was channeling that 😂 Thank you for your kind words 🫶 Wishing you the best on your painting journey!
they all look really great💖 I remember Lisa Rivo has a blog post about adding w&n blending medium in gouache to keep them from drying and it worked great for me🙏🏻
Yes!! I believe she has a video about it too! I've been wanting to try it for a while now, but haven't seen the medium in stores 👀 I might need to order some and give it a try!
one of my new favorite artists to watch on youtube! you have such a beautiful, calming presence and your art is so wonderful. i associate pale blues/purples/reds with you and your art which is a color palette i don't see more often but you work with it so well! and i'm really looking forward to your new content!

Aw thank you so much! I'm doing some of the heads in oil and watercolor as well- but mostly gouache! I find it is by far the quickest, so probably better for this challenge :-) Thanks for watching! 💛
These are beautiful! For blending, I lay down all of my planes in blocks and then use a very slightly damp brush to hatch between the two colours. It allows me to have really smooth transitions and good control over what goes where relatively quickly, and it doesn’t make it chalky.
Thank you so much! I'm going to give your blending technique a try! 😄 I definitely recommend a lavender for portraits, it's such a great mixing colour to have on hand
My favorites are the 4th one and the second one. Even though you said it was your least favorite, the purple hues made a big difference. Plus, I've seen the reference and thought you naled it! What brand of gouache are you using?
Thank you so much! 💛 Purples are fantastic for shadows, but I really enjoy pushing it and seeing if can get away with using them elsewhere! :') I can't go without a lilac or pale purple in my palette now
@@emhuesart I am quite excited to to have a go myself! I am a big believer in using colours when painting skin that are not considered ‘skin’ colours… because more funz 😅
Ahhhh! So excited to find you and this channel. Just starting the gouache journey.. love portrait drawing...so this is fantastic. Really beautiful work!
Your art is so pretty! Is it possible that maybe you could do some kind of tutorial or tip video for gouache paint? I really struggle with capturing someone’s likeness and not getting my paints muddy lol.
Ah thank you! I love watching these sort of videos as well 😊 I always try to draw and paint different faces so that I don't get too comfortable doing just one thing! Thank you for watching ❤️

Really great work, Emily 😀 It's so nice to hear your thought processes about each study. I can totally relate with how art can make you feel so good one moment, then like rubbish the next. All the best with the rest of the challenge 😊
Your video inspired me to start this challenge. I’ve been wanting to do some color studies and painting faces. I’ll definitely be waiting for your next videos!!

Amazing portraits Emily! ❤ You're an inspiration! Excited to see your next videos!!🤗😊 I was also thinking of trying out gouche but still a bit afraid to do so because of the reason you just mentioned 🥹they're not as flexible as oil paints 😕
Aw thank you Jessica! ❤️ I find gouache very challenging, but that might be because I am so used to oils haha 😅 But it's still a super fun medium to play around with. Also, I kinda enjoy the challenge! I'd love to see how it goes if you ever give them a try 😄✨
your work is lovely , emily .. glad that i came across your channel.. i am crazy for gouache , and come from watercolor background ... norakag, here 👍👍
Just found your channel, I love your work! Can you make a video talking about how you use colors like purple in a portrait? Do you pick a value to use the color on? Or are using it for cooler hues? I have yet to be successful doing this :/
Thanks so much and what a great suggestion! I'll try to do a video where I go into more detail about colors in portraits and how to incorporate colors like purples! A quick explanation though, is that I tend to use the lavender color to mix lighter shades in the face that are cooler leaning 😊
I had technical difficulties with my phone when I was filming my 100 heads (I kept running out of space 😢) it’s really frustrating and gets you out of the zone, so I completely understand what you mean
Ooh I've definitely been there with phone storage while filming! My issue was that my SD card said it was full even though it wasn't 😅 luckily I figured it out, I thought it was busted haha 🙃 thanks so much for watching!
@@emhuesart ahh that's annoying! I had one where my camera 100% filmed the entire thing working absolutely fine with the SD card, then I put the SD card in my computer and it was empty... didn't record a thing 😶
wow. I just found your channel. I watched all the videos and I love them so much!! they are calm and motivating. I want to do 100 head too! by the way, did you ever try the golden open acrylic paint? I heard they stay wet much longer and the left over paint could be store for months without drying, very much like oil paint but easier to clean. In one of your video you said we can ask you to test out different paints. :P could you please test the open acrylic so we can follow your color choices. These are soo good 💜💜. Can you please tell me what type of method you're using . Is it a stroke painting? I really wanna learn this method . And if possible i would like you to make a video on this method . It would be a great help to me . Thnks ❤️
Hi there! Thank you so much ❤️ I don't really follow any exact method, but I do pay a lot of attention to shapes, color, and the direction of my strokes. I'm planning on making a video where I go into more detail about how I approach a portrait painting- I hope that that video will be of more help to you 😊
It kind of looks blotchy I've sent off for some gouche , it see!s to have an old fashioned poster board effect were these paints used to paint cartoons in the past?
I find that it is very challenging! Though, I see some people work with it effortlessly 😅 I think it's hard to get into as an oil painter because it's just so darn different from oils haha!
Yes, I do use references! I made a Pinterest board for all of the references I use in these 100 head videos. I just added it to the description of this video 😊 thanks for watching! 💛
watching this really makes me want to play with gouache again 🥹I was so frustrated by the value change when it dries...super impressed that your stubbornness is not letting it win 👏
I'm not sure if there is a name for this style, but I think about it as being realistic/ naturalistic, yet embracing the qualities of paint, and not being afraid to showcase the fact that it's a painting (rather than a photo-realistic painting)! I have fun with color and try to put a lot of emphasis on the direction of my brushstrokes! Also breaking down the subject into it's larger shapes! And even though I'm talking about painting with gouache, I use the same techniques with oil painting, digital painting, and even sketching! Some artists that inspire are: John Singer Sargent, James Gurney, Gregory Manchess, and Jenny Saville! I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have, or dm me on Instagram @ emhuesart 😊 Best of luck in your artistic journey!
@@emhuesart thank you soo much for some tips and recs!!! I enjoy doing lots of digital and painting with gouache. I find myself struggling to get the paintbrush look(?). I love the way you use ur colors and how ur not afraid to use colors like lilac and green when painting the faces. I’m going to look at some of the artists you rec and try practicing tonight‼️💞
I'm really panning on redoing this challenge. I did it once until 70-something in 2020 if I remember correctly, but then the first collection was deleted and I stopped. Back then I spent an hour on every head, but now I want to make them quicker, so I practice the fundamental of sketching down a head rather quickly and accurately. Also... no, the doggo sounds are not audible. :D
I did the original challenge years ago, but I definitely didn't finish it!😅 I think the key might be forcing ourselves to do them quicker. Maybe set a timer for 30 mins per head and then shorten it to 15 or 10 if you can 😊 Also, yay for no dog sounds! She breathes so loud haha
@@emhuesart I spent an hour on each one back then, now I'm planning to make 4 heads with 10 minutes each, then every 5th will be 20 minutes. No fancy stuff, just practicing how to capture likeness in a few minutes.
Surprisingly a very long time! Though it does depend on your climate and on how often you use them. I find they stay fresh if you stir them and add more paint when needed. That being said, I would only really recommend it if you paint with gouache pretty frequently though, as it will definitely dry out faster than paint left in tubes! I have also heard that M. Graham gouaches tend to get moldy as they have honey as an ingredient, so maybe best to avoid if that is the brand you use 😊
Well at least I think the color palette of your second portrait is very nice, except maybe the reds in her face might be too strong as if she’s got blood on her cheeks 😅
Haha agreed!! I went back and repainted it off camera, but I'm still not happy with it 😅 Atleast it was a learning experience! Thanks so much for watching 💛
Awesome challenge! You did great. Just some helpful feedback since you seemed to be a little stuck on that second portrait. You say you used the say strategy but arent sure why it was tough. But looking over the first two, you did not use the same strategy. You started on fine, dark details FAR earlier in the second portrait instead of laying down more shadows and midtones first and i think thats why the second portrait felt difficult. You didnt have the same foundation the second time
Thanks for watching! 💛 Something very exciting is coming soon! 👀
"sometimes it will make you feel amazing, some times it will make you feel... a trash" can realte

I would definitely recommend James Gurney's Color and Light book, I learned so much from it! Thank you so much for watching ❤️
I love these so much! how long did each head take to paint?
Thank you!! :-) they all took different amounts of time, between 20 mins- to over an hour (that pesky second one took the longest) 😅
Thank you. I pray that I remember the guidance.
So glad you found it helpful! ☺️

What is this art style called? Ive always wanted to paint like this but Idk where to start😭 Do you have a recommendations?
No fancy stuff, just practicing how to capture likeness in a few minutes.
your portraits are amazing can you make a tutorial pls
Thanks so much! I'll try to do a video in the near future where I explain my process while creating a portrait more 😊
How long does the gouache stay “wet” in the airtight container?
Surprisingly a very long time! Though it does depend on your climate and on how often you use them. I find they stay fresh if you stir them and add more paint when needed. That being said, I would only really recommend it if you paint with gouache pretty frequently though, as it will definitely dry out faster than paint left in tubes! I have also heard that M. Graham gouaches tend to get moldy as they have honey as an ingredient, so maybe best to avoid if that is the brand you use 😊
Have you ever tried adding vegetable glycerin instead of water ?
I haven't, but I've heard about this! It's something I've been considering 👀💛
I wanna get gouache so bad but I don’t even paint that much 😭
Well at least I think the color palette of your second portrait is very nice, except maybe the reds in her face might be too strong as if she’s got blood on her cheeks 😅
Haha agreed!! I went back and repainted it off camera, but I'm still not happy with it 😅 Atleast it was a learning experience! Thanks so much for watching 💛
We have the same last name I’m Megan Hughes
Your very em-hue-zing 😅
😂🙌
Awesome challenge! You did great. Just some helpful feedback since you seemed to be a little stuck on that second portrait. You say you used the say strategy but arent sure why it was tough. But looking over the first two, you did not use the same strategy. You started on fine, dark details FAR earlier in the second portrait instead of laying down more shadows and midtones first and i think thats why the second portrait felt difficult. You didnt have the same foundation the second time
Thank you so much! It's very helpful to hear an outsider's perspective 💛 I'm going to rewatch this and see what I learn from my process!
