🇳🇴Chasing Lights in Tromsø, Norway

- Thomas Hunger is an average German fellow but with a touch of quirkiness-his obsession with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). He beams with childish enthusiasm and his eyes light up with wonder every time he talks about this natural phenomenon.
But Thomas is not a visitor seeing it for the first time nor is he just a regular tour guide-Thomas “chases” Aurora like a stormchaser would chase tornados. He is in the business of selling the experience of seeing the Northern Lights even though he can never guarantee his guests that he and his team will succeed in "catching" one. Still, his trips are filled with excitement and frenzy as he constantly consults weather apps to find it, communicates with his team on possible sightings, and crosses open borders into Sweden and Finland with his head fixed skywards, waiting for Aurora to poke out from behind the clouds at night.
When the van they travel in stops his enthusiastic guests get off and plant a thicket of tripods in the snow-cameras pointed up and ISOs boosted high to vividly capture the magical and undulating green waves in the sky.
Thomas runs one of the most successful companies in Tromsø, Norway incidentally called, Chasing Lights. Guests from as far as Malaysia, China, and India make the journey just to be mesmerized by this wash of green that fills the skies of Arctic nights. It’s an experience to cross off the bucket list, his guests often say.

3 years back on exactly this day we were in Tromsø. We travelled from Mumbai, India to Tromsø for our honeymoon and words can't even begin to describe how beautiful it is. The first time we went "chasing" the norther lights we got to see just a faint green light in the sky and honestly, I was a bit discouraged. But we decided to go again and I'm glad we did because what we saw that day was nothing short of magical. It was pitch dark where we went, couldn't even see the snow below our feet. We sat inside a lavvu which kept us warm and periodically checked outside but it was still dark. After a couple of minutes we went out once again and we started seeing a faint light in the sky, everyone rushed out and then in a matter of seconds the sky lit up. We could see the snow below us, the river (or some water body) next to us and everything was just amazing. Just when you think it couldn't get any better, the lights started "dancing". The colours changed and it covered pretty much the entire sky :'). I sincerely hope everyone manages to go and experience it because it was an absolute privilege to just stand there and look up! :)
I would love to go to Tromsø for my honeymoon but my future husband seems set on Hawaii or somewhere tropical. Hopefully I can talk him into at least taking a ski trip close by so we can go chase the lights! I’ve always wanted to see the lights and I want to share my dream with him. I feel like him being with me for the moment I’ve been waiting for all these years will make it even better! Also I’m glad you got to see the lights and God bless you :)!!
@@ashlyndallas2024Yeah, it's better to witness it with the one you love :) I really hope you get to see it with him! :D btw, the second tour that I had gone on was with Tromso friluftsenter. The reason I'm mentioning it cause they were really really sweet and accomodating and Knut (our tour guide) was an absolute delight. They obviously don't remember me but I thought of sharing it with you since you're keen on going there and I know that when I go back there I'll be going with them only again :)
How long did the northern Lights lasted in sky?
@@vanshshah6503 It can be minutes or it can be hours.
Awesome testimony- thank you and greetings from NYC! 🤗🌷😄
I went to Norway last summer. It was a dream come true. It was the most beautiful country I’ve seen. The Fjords are truly worth every single praise of them. And in winter you have northern lights. You just have so much to offer!
That coupled with secularism, Norway is a dream.

I remember when I was little my grandfather took me skiing on a lake in the mountains in the evening. After a little while we arrived at one of the little islands in the middle of the lake. We sat there ,drinking hot chocolate and then suddenly ,I looked up and the sky was illuminated by the northern lights .
I felt chills down my spine and I don't think I will ever feel these kind of chills ever again (unless I get to see them again). I will always remember this experience and I hope one day to see them again
Oh lucky !
You got chills because you were so startled by such a massive event in the sky. I felt that when I saw a full blood red moon once. It scared me so much because I wasn't expecting to see that as I rounded a corner on my midnight walk, lol. I got major chills XD I thought I was witnessing an explosion way in the distance. So glad I got my bearings and realized it was the moon!

You can find it some places in Canada, Finnland and Norway. But you might find it other places too
@@ask6037 And Alaska.
If you live in the U.S. there's always Alaska. Just a few days ago I got an email from Alaska Airlines promoting the northern lights with a fare discount. Guess I'll try that next winter if I can endure the below zero temperatures!

@@bablubhar hmmm.... imo October can be almost a 50/50 chance, but I guess, it's better than November ... Damn I teared up watching this especially the end. Been in love with the northern lights ever since hearing about them first as a kid. Never got the chance to see them but hopefully soon. Northern Lights, Tromso, Norway, I'm coming for you and I REALLY CAN'T WAIT 😍😍😍
I bet I would cry if I see those lights in person... they look stunning and breathtaking, like they make you think this world is enormous and we worry about stupid things when there’s such things like this
God is an artist. He drew those light beautifully. God is great
Seeing stuff like this gives you that feeling of being alive and not worrying about anything else. It really puts me in my place as a person and im just watching this thru my little phone.
I've never been fortunate enough to see these lights in person from southern USA. Only in videos. I had no idea how beautiful this was and it moves!! It's like being on some other planet! So beautiful!!!
Travel to the Northern US states and spend some time there if you would like to see aurora borealis; like Michigan, Minnesota etc. Of course the farther North you go the more likely you will see them, so Canada or Alaska is good also! The main thing is, find a way you can spend some time, because there is no guarantee what day or night they will show up. For example, if someone can work from home and wishes to see northern lights, they might wish to live in one of the northernmost US states or Canadian provinces. Or perhaps you might wish to attend university in one of these places, or try finding a job in the north for a few years. You should be able to see the northern lights very many times if you are able to spend awhile living there.
Norway a country of peace & beauty ...love from India...one day intent to travel to Norway and see Northern Lights directly...
Amazing video !!! i love Norway, the northern lights are incredible, a gift from mother nature
God's creation is amazing, isn't it?
@@donnawilcock5774 oh yeah it is
I consider myself extremely lucky. While these people spent a huge amount of money and time and trouble and travel and froze their butts off to see this for a couple minutes, I got to watch it for basically free for half an hour, and stayed cozy warm the whole time.
Back in 1983, I was flying from LA to Germany In mid-December on business. Free flight. Flight traveled all night. And I was lucky to have the furthest left-hand seat, next to window. In middle of night, as plane was probably over Greenland, I happened to glance out the window, and saw these lights. At first I couldn't comprehend what I was seeing, since I wasn't traveling to see these lights. The whole thing caught me off-guard. Then I realized what I was looking at. All the green swirling colors.....it was pretty amazing.
Yea, Pilots' see a lot of world wonders when dey fly @ high n low altitudes. God is great 💪🏻❤💓💗
This is beautiful. I can only imagine how much of a magical moment it is. Complete silence and the faint sound of wind as a stream of colors fill the sky
Also the pure starry sky

These northern lights also appears in Canada.
That sight made me cry like a child.. it's overwhelming.. it's overwhelming to realize how small we are in this universe, how tender is our arrogance in front of the the light it holds... And how dare are we to act like the masters, to exploit the nature, the sea, the sky , the soil... Ahh God this made a so humbled..😭😭🌌🌌❤️

I almost feel bad for telling you that when i lived on Senja, this was my "going home light" for a year. Its not always green. It is quite often pink/purple as well. But one thing i can tell you. It is ALWAYS beautiful.

Beautiful ! I've seen the Northern Lights from North Dakota USA, they are amazing. But to see them in Norway is my hope , to travel to the home of my Great Grandparents!! Magical !!

Runs through end of september till april, northern europe specially in lapland , north sweden and finland you get to see this beauty, there is some kind of saudade , pensive nostalgic melancholy ,which is happiness and sadness at the same time, there is something to it that cant be explained, its enjoying nature while listening to pink floyd classics , northern europe is beautiful specially when you get to see this extravagant showcase mothernature has to offer.. it is something beautiful cannot express it in words.
Being a dreamer to experience such movement, I have tears in eyes . But al these peoples there have pass trough my time . Hope to success my dream.

@@jeffrivera1358 I would say December, since it's the darkest month. The Sun doesn't rise until January 21st :)
And during summer there's zero chance because of the midnight sun, so there's that. I don't know which of the darker months have the most clear skies, maybe January or February. In the end, there's no guarantee anyway.
