    Life in a Metro is one of the most intelligent films ever made in Bollywood. It was way ahead of its time, with great music, great performances. The film actually makes us live the scenes.

    • @thedevilsadvocate858
      @thedevilsadvocate858 2 года назад +46

      Exactly, Life in a metro showed that everyone is Grey there's no black or white. Take Kangana's character, who was in relationship with older, married man. Even though he seemingly _left_ his family for her, he doesn't respect her and treat her like a plaything. Which cause Kangana's character emotional pain.while in KANK Dev and Maya seems like pure villains and you won't empathise with them.

    Karan Johar explained the Maya-Rishi relationship like this. Rishi was perfect to show that even if a person is perfect doesn’t mean that the person they love will love them back. I think it’s great cuz so many people crib that I am nice but no one loves me. That was Maya’s dilemma. She married him thinking ki achcha hai toh it will work. But compatibility doesn’t always work like that. And she fell in love with a very flawed person. Again to prove that there is no mr or ms perfect.

    These videos are worth watching. His thoughts totally match with mine and are logical, except one at the end.
    It is okay to not be with someone you once married and vowed life long companionship with. But that does not mean cheating is okay. Why not tell them that you are not happy, the marriage is not working and leave with some grace and dignity? This will allow them to be at peace because most of the time the person cheated on starts developing trust issues, insecurity, self-doubt etc wondering where did they go wrong, even if probably they were just not the kind that their spouse wanted but otherwise a totally fine person.
    Also, if somebody has been cruel to you in love(cheating, violent, basically toxic) that left you shattered, it is okay to "not forgive" them. People often advice how we should forgive the other person not "for them" but for our own peace. One can forgive mistakes, but not deliberate hurt. So it is okay to not forgive. However, the hatred has to go too. How to lose the hatred and not forgive at the same time? Love yourself, love those who love you. Accept that this person did not leave me because there was something grossly wrong with me. If there was, work on it because being a better person is only going to help you.
    Accept that what happened had a profound impact on you and you probably wasted like "x" years of your life on the wrong person. But it does not have to be "x+Y" years by still thinking about them. They left you in the past, so you leave them at the same past and move on. Just because they did not have a sense of respect for you which led them to cheat on you(or beat you, hurt you), does not mean you actually are not worthy of respect. You do not have to be friends and have a conversation with them as if everything is okay that they did. You also do not have to feel any negativity if they happen to cross your paths. You can choose to stay indifferent since they were someone who was ONCE a part of your life and dont matter anymore. You dont have to smile at them at a mutual gathering. Live and let live can suffice.
    This is a damn long comment since I was thinking as I wrote it. But yeah, well said in this video. This was a trashy movie which failed to bring the point across. Infidelity is not okay. Marrying more than once(not at the same time) is fine, being unhappy with someone after you have a kid is also fine, being wrong in the choice of your partner is fine. But EXTRA marital affair breaks far too many people than the two people involved in the affair. It is a selfish thing to do and one should have the grace to leave first and then love anybody they want to.

    • @shnehaprasad974
      @shnehaprasad974 2 года назад +1

      I very much agree with what you've so brilliantly elaborated here. Infidelity, no matter what, is wrong. Its a selfish thing to do and any reason given to justify it is just to fit the narrative of the proprietor behind. Its inherent that people recognize it, and this movie did a very shitty job if their intention behind the movie was to show how not wanting to stay married to a person you don't love is ok and seeking out love somewhere else is.

    If both of them had a problem with their partners then they should have ended the previous relationship first and then pursued each other. Turn a new page but first end the previous relationship. This will only justify cheating which actually should not be used as an excuse.PS: just an honest opinion.

    • @priyodit
      @priyodit 2 года назад +6

      i was hoping someone would have pointed this out, and i found this comment here. I agree with you, and I feel that the script writers were not matured enough. Why- because they could have shown that people tried bridging the gaps with their partners and the partners didn't get their drift, or something to show that they at least tried something.
      Here, they just started cheating. This is irresponsible writing, and they wanted us to give them our hard earned money for this irresponsible garbage!
      Edit: if we start looking from the angle of cheaters (SRK and Rani), this movie starts making sense. i realised it just now that i was looking it from the perspective of Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta.

    But I believe Movies should show the real aspects of the Society, and not merely only show the good and heroic things around the world. No one is 100% Correct, and no one is 100% wrong. All are correct in their own places. No one can get into other's shoes to experience what is going on in their life. Live and Let Live Peacefully

    I’d love to watch KANK part 2 where Maya will leave Dev because of his toxic behaviour. Man he’s just straight up obnoxious! One of the problems with the writing of his character is that he is portrayed more as a narcissist rather than damaged. Such people cannot be themselves happy and can’t let others around them be happy. He would have made a joke of his relationship with Maya as well, would have mocked her for not being able to conceive, and highlighted how she is the reason for all the misery in his life. Being with Maya is comforting for him because he has someone who can’t give it back to him like Rhea did.

    Incase of Maya and Rishi it did not make sense for Maya to look for love outside at all. Her biggest pet peeve seemed to be her lack of ability to bear children and Dev being the toxic guy he is could never provide her with the love and support someone like her needs, by someone like her I mean someone who actually wants to have kids but can't. This movie would've ended so much better if Maya and Dev realized that the "problems" in their respective marriages was not because they were with the wrong partners or that they fell out of love, the root of their problems was their own lack of self-esteem. Dev was bitter about his leg, Maya was bitter about her barrenness and they both projected their bitterness on their marriage. Them marrying each other didn't solve the issue, it was the three years of self reflection and taking some time alone to realize their issues that probably made them work. I don't know.
    Having said that, I think Karan Johar wanted to imply that true love doesn't have to make sense or that two broken people can make a more balanced couple because they understand each other, doesn't have to follow logic. But if you really want to show that then show the aftermath too. Show what happened a few years down the line, did Dev and Maya get therapy? Or did they fall back into their old routines? Did they finally learn to control their bitterness? What is the point of two broken people getting together if they don't help each other become better people?

    TLDR;
    As for what Dev and Maya's problems with their spouses were-just like you said, they tried really hard to love their spouses and they probably COULD HAVE-if they didn't undergo the trauma they did - Dev losing his career and Maya's infertility. This led to an inferiority complex for them, which is justifiable.
    Rhea was doing so well in her career and famous in her field. Even Rishi tried to hire her once (he tells her when they meet at the hospital). Indians have this ingrained mindset that the man is the breadwinner and the woman takes care of the house-not vice-versa. Despite how progressive their environment was, they couldn't shake off this cultural mindset. So as a man, this is a HUGE blow to Dev's ego. Dev is very sentimental. Rhea is chill and easygoing (their conversation about her forgetting a lot of things). Dev realizes their marriage is going bad when he forgets their anniversary, but the contract for $5mil made him seem positive. There would be two breadwinners-so more time to spend as a family. But that all goes to shit.
    So now, Rhea can't even see her son much and this really irritates Dev, knowing how much their son longs for his mother. Rhea secretly resents her situation too, telling her colleagues that "if their husbands leave them-they're better off". She tries to be mature-but explodes on their wedding anniversary (which Dev and Maya planned) and tells Dev that the reason she's a workaholic was to COMPENSATE financially for his failure. Even during a fight, that's LITERALLY the worst thing you could say to someone who's disabled. It's painful being in both their shoes. That simple couple's therapy session would've helped them, but hey, Rhea is too busy for that! And Dev doesn't care anymore.
    Maya's issue is more complicated than Dev's. Maya felt Rishi and her were incompatible from the start and rejects Rishi for 3 years, after which she agrees to the marriage. She may also have felt obligated to say yes, because Rishi and his father took care of her ever since her parents died. It's normal for women to have cold feet on their wedding, but Maya seemed particularly distressed. Maya was already somewhat emotionally unstable from the beginning, possibly due to the trauma from losing her parents. Her unhealthy obsession with cleaning for example. Psychology posits that this sort of behavior stems from a fear of losing control. Maya's life spiraled out of her control when she learns she can never be a mother. Rishi doesn't mind this, and that's very considerate of him, but he jokingly reminds her of this often, which is rather rude imo. Women are sexually aroused when they feel emotional attachment and Rishi's attitude wasn't helping in any way. No matter how romantic he was, he didn't try to understand Maya's feelings.
    For starters, Maya is an introvert and highly sensitive. You always see her alone at social events. She doesn't share Rishi's penchant for partying and even tells him this. This would leave both of them lonely because it means they spend less time together-so an unintelligible distance begins to pile up between them. Rishi is childish and he seems to be self aware of it, and does nothing to change himself. At the end of the movie, Rishi acknowledges this was his mistake. He's always fun-loving and happy-go-lucky, off in his own world. His words sound inconsiderate to Maya, even if he didn't mean any harm. So when she tries to bridge that gap by having a "discussion", he always runs away. Here's a callback to Maya and Dev's first meeting-Dev sits down and says he wants to "DISCUSS" why Maya is hiding from her wedding. Relationships are all about communication and Rishi seems to hate probing into his own behavior. Of course, another simple couple's therapy could have helped them, but Rishi is too "childish" for that! And Maya gave up as well.
    With all of this information in place, you can understand why Dev and Maya are so in sync despite being so different. It's hard to live with a "perfect" spouse when you feel broken and have a disability. It's hard not only on Dev and Maya, but also on Rhea and Rishi who are mentally stable and don't understand the pain they feel.
    Cheating is terrible, and it's the worst thing you can do to a spouse. But do you really think it's that easy to fess up and divorce? When you have a family in place and children to go with it, it's extremely difficult to make the choice to leave that setup. It's not only difficult for your direct family but also your extended one too. Indian society still considers divorce shameful because shaadi is a "janam janam ka rishta". Hence, the sad reality is that many in India, especially women, still LIVE with their cheating spouses for the sake of their families and children. At least Dev and Maya acknowledge their mistakes and repent. But think of the many people who cheat without even a shred of conscience. It may require multiple viewings of this movie to truly understand the characters; that's how good the story is-and I find myself wondering if it was actually Cringey Johar who wrote it xD

      @@halleyscomet2672 No offense, but I was painfully bored during Bahubali. The first part was okayish, but the second had me yawning. All the characters were so predictable and one dimensional; thrown into a bin of masala and mass which isn't exactly my taste. I'm not a fan of commercial movies and try not to judge people who like them. But personally, I love movies which make you read between the lines.
      To me, a movie is a visual medium and not a novel, so it's all about showing us everything that's left unsaid. Most things are better portrayed through cinematography and acting rather than explicit dialogue in order to build characters. For example, notice how Maya always carries Dev's bags for him, which no else in the movie does. It shows us how close they are and how she's willing to share his baggage quite literally. It's this attention to detail which I admire. That aspect was well above average in this movie and it makes you think and discover something new each time you watch it. In that way, I appreciate the portrayal of these very human characters.

      @@meeramalhotra33 about bahubali... It's completely fine to have different opinions, but if I m not mistaken part 1 made more than a 1000 crores which is probably more than any movie has made so far...
      Why? Because people loved it.
      The problem is this isn't a book to read between the lines. A movie should be made in a way people understand. But it's fine if you like it as long as you take the correct message from it. The worst part was when they tried to make each other jealous by using their spouses. It can't be defended. Then about her carrying his "baggage", he clearly had inferiority complex and the only thing made him fall in love with her was probably the fact that she was a bit miserable and her life was slipping out of her hands. He wanted control of the situation while in his life instead of him his wife had control. I really don't think he would like it if she carried his "baggage" cuz his wife clearly did that and he still cheated on her.

    Well said very well said. I remember that my family and my uncle's family had gone to watch this movie in theatre when I and my sis were like 6 7 yrs old, uss time story obviously samajh nahi aayi but we loved the songs and when I used to ask my parents about that movie, they said they didn't like it and I understand now why. But if I watch this movie now, I'd definitely judge it coz there are parts which are sensitive in today's time and I'd probably cry at some parts but the point is it was not bad but not that good as well. But the concept was definitely strong

    at 5:27 you said 'it's not necessary that those who cheat are wrong'. I beg to differ. If you are unhappy in a marriage, you should confront your spouse and try to work or end the marriage. CHEATING IS NEVER AN OPTION. I agree with the message that you wanted to provide but got triggered by the above statement. It just contradicts your entire message.
