I was there... I played the Tenor Sax... It was written for one of my friends... who was taken away long before his time. Even though it was 4 years ago, I remember every note. RIP Greg, You wont be forgotten.
I like how no one commented about how the screen says Reverberations but it's Kindred Spirits. But I do love this part. Especially the how the bass drums represents the heartbeat. Cause even though I play flute, I was blessed enough to play the bass drum part.
We're playing this song for District 10 Honor band. Once I heard the story behind this piece, I almost burst into tears right there. This is a very deep song, that family will never be forgotten.
Balmages worked with us on this piece for an honor band. He said that it was about a tragedy from his hometown in which an honor student at the high school went home and shot and killed his brother, sister, mother, and father. The 4 chimes (starting at 3:02) are to represent each of the fallen family members.
My son's band played this today at high school state competition. I cried because it was so beautiful, and then I cried harder when I read about the origin. Beautiful work Mr. Balmages!
I played this song my freshman year in regular concert band, and didn't really care for it that much. But then I played it this year in our wind ensemble for NMEA and I learned to appreciate the emotion in it. I got so into it this year...still getting kind of emotional just listening to it. What a fantastic memorial piece.
i just recieved this song in band yesterday and i absolutly love this song!!!! and i am happy to see a piece of music that has a Bass Clarinet solo haha.!!!!
Played this piece when I was in High School, and by far still in my top 3 favorite pieces. I was First Trombone, and still remember the nervous excitement I had when we prepared to play this piece.
when we're practicing this song at my school i always have to hold back tears when the bass drum signifying the heartbeat fades off. and my band teacher always ruins the moment when she screams at our bass drum player to bring the bass out more. but i love this song.............
I played it in 10th or 11th grade, and I'm 27. I still think of it now and again. I can't remember all the details behind the origin story, but I remember crying when I heard it, so every time I hear this song, my heart aches.
Today I had my concert for honours band and we played it kinda bad but THIS IS SO PRETTY AND I KNOW WHAT IT STANDS FOR ITS TERRIBLE AND THIS IS SUCH A FANTASTIC PIECE OF MUSIC TO REPRESENT SUCH A TRAGIC STORY
I played the piano for this in 7th grade, and now, after listening to this again, knowing why it was written, every one of those 4 chime hits stings with sadness.
@NightSeraphim Yeah, he told us that at the premiere of the piece (in the town where the tragedy occured) that there was not a dry eye in the auditorium between the audience and the band and even him. Hope your marching band does well. :D
Last year 3 days after Christmas a house fire broke out and killed 4 people in a family. 2 of those were 2 sisters who were a part of my high school's band and particiipated in the marching band as well. the other 2 were the father and mother.the mother was a sub teacher. Being a small community the whole entire area was devastated. all 4 were the purest and most wonder people possible. in our spring concert we the band members of our high school band are holding a honor piece to say a final
Such a beautiful piece~ My band is going to play this piece for one of our festivals, but hopefully it doesn't make the audience cry too much...This particular band played it very beautifully and with a lot of emotion, hope my band sounds like that!
Performed this in the Kansas State University concert band clinic under the direction of Dr. Robert Meunier (Director of Bands at Drake University) yesterday; very beautiful yet sad piece.
I think they should've brought out the bass drum part a little where it's supposed to sound like a heart beat fainting away. Also I love the part where the trombone have an F# and a B, while the Tubas have a F and a B flat. It was written to have a lot of tension while the way it was musically written takes care of it and helps it not sound bad. Lol I'm not of all the music terms for this but it was an amazing thing to fit the back round story of this piece.
I remember that! I played trombone for this song, and it was a moment that stood out, for sure. The whole song stuck with me, though. Which is why I'm looking it up 10+ years after I played it in an All-County Band concert.
@eevee2glacieon goodbye to the family and to pay respects to the relatives to the family. One of the sisters was only vistiting from college for the weekend . While i only met them for one semester... i considered the youngest sister to die as a friend because no matter what she had that optimistic attitude. our community even held a candle lit memorial for the tragic loss. Also being a major part of the church, we know that they will be greatly missed by all the members and never to be forgotten
@eevee2glacieon the hony piece our band is to play was to be Kindred Spirits. We will miss the family for years to come.RIP Davis family , we will try to live by their example - to Live, to Laugh, and to Love. God has truly recieved 4 angels.
How many of you know that this song was actually written about a guy who murdered his whole family? We were playing this is band and our band director said that he read the description and it said that. He found it a more serious song than we originally played so now we play it and not mess around. I play 1st trumpet on this song.
@kamoffire My director never told us that. and he's normally good at telling us what the background history of it is, so we perform it well. we're doing a little part of it as our ballad in marching band this year.
I played this song with the band it was commisioned for my family was very close to the greg browning family the murders were just awful my older brother who was in the same grade and close to the older brother who killed his family was heartbroken and torned so playing this piece was just so emotional tears came down my face the whole time i was playing😿😿💔

this is so easy i played this my 8th grade year in my regular middle school band
Eddie Finley it’s not just how hard the music was it was the very mature emotions and story behind it that made the song difficult

Kam Konek And the piano represents the laughter of the younger siblings before the tragedy. Happened on February 1st, 2008.
Kam Konek And yes I get this comment is from six years ago, but still!
My son's band played this today at high school state competition. I cried because it was so beautiful, and then I cried harder when I read about the origin. Beautiful work Mr. Balmages!
My band got this two days ago. It is so beautiful. The flutes are the only ones who have gotten really emotional about it yet. Go flutes!
This piece makes me really reflect on so much of my life.
