      You're a brave person taking fsd down the Holland/ Lincoln tunnels
      I've found that FSD is the opposite of AP on highways. AP let's me relax for stretches.
      FSD has me on edge the entire time. Feels like a near slighted new driver. Unsure in places, slow when it shouldn't be.

    "very good build in the right conditions" ---- absolutely spot on. My first drive with this build was a massive improvement from 10.12, but with no traffic around. It has become very good at negotiating roads and stoplights and intersections etc... basic road rules. Now it needs better "street smarts" for negotiating in traffic. And, I would love a way to dial back the acceleration. I enjoy riding slow. Great video as usual! Thank you.

    To drive in Manhattan, system must be assertive and perhaps even aggressive sometimes, like the human pilots.
    Tesla needs to enlist the help of NYC yellow taxi drivers to train its FSD Beta for driving in NYC.

    I've had 10.69.2 do some incredibly stupid things in only two days of driving it. Lane changes in an intersection. Completely missing getting into the left turn lanes for getting onto the freeway. Almost stopping going into a left turn lane and leaving the rear of the car out in traffic (the truck behind me gave me the "bird" for that one). Turning on the turn signal when stopped at a traffic light when not in a turn lane, i.e. signaling a lane change while stopped at a traffic light. Waiting until WAY too late to change lanes getting ready for turns. Changing lanes in one direction only to change back shortly after. Going down a freeway on ramp at 35 MPH to merge with traffic going 75 MPH. AND it still completely ignores speed limit changes in school zones (a pet peeve of mine). After exiting the freeway for a left turn, it turned into the turn lane to go back onto the freeway in the opposite direction rather than into the regular traffic lane for the route it was following. It seems like there is still a long way to go. I'm in the Phoenix Arizona area.

    • @Kbuster36
      @Kbuster36 2 года назад +3

      If they can fix the lane selection moving forward I think that will be the biggest step improvement that spring forward the system. As of now that remains my biggest issue.

    • @davemerk68
      @davemerk68 2 года назад

      I'm in the Phoenix area also (Buckeye) and have noticed gradual improvements, but like you said, there's still more work to do. Lane placement is my biggest issue also. I normally get into the correct lane for my upcoming turn up to a mile and a half ahead of time. Quite often making a left turn onto the freeway would be missed if I don't intervene. The car goes to the right and waits for the last minute sometimes to get over to the left. Sometimes it won't go to the left at all and we'll miss the turn. So lane selection and a slow approach to stop signs are the two big things that I disengage from. Out here in Arizona, people are in a big hurry and will run you off the road if you're not moving. A slow approach to a stop sign combined with a stop that's 25 ft short of the line followed by a slow creep through the stop sign will surely get you run off the road out here. I saw some videos in the first few 10.69 versions where the car was much more natural and it seems like it's been dialed back in 10.69.2. I understand the need to be cautious and to avoid liability and also look forward to a more confident and natural ride like I've seen in some of the videos. Can't wait to try out hardware 4 and also take in some of the benefits of the dojo computing!

    • @iowa_don
      @iowa_don 2 года назад +1

      @@davemerk68 It’s unclear if hardware 4 will be retrofitted. I have a Cybertruck ordered which should show up in 2 years or so. Really hoping Tesla honors the $7,000 FSD price when I ordered it and that it has hardware 4. 🤞🤞

    30:55 Autopilot aborted for system error. Not good for Tesla, should systematically test in such cities. Many European cities are worse than New York - actually in every italian city, New York traffic is standard until sunset. Then it becomes the land of the free. The darker it gets, the more traffic signs are ignored and driving becomes an art.

    Nobody discusses, that the system is not only clueless at some scenarios, but I get also more and more the feeling, that at real though situations it is also much too slow. The processor of Tesla is mindblowing fast, but in a real difficult city like New York where humans make quick decisions because they know on what you have to focus really, the car processor is there too slow with it's calculations and decisions... FSD focusses always on everything, what makes the processing too slow for such a crazy wild traffic. The FSD software is not flexibel enough to know what is important and what is not, because therefor you needed to realy understand what the things mean in your surrounding, but a computer doesn't understand the world, just sees geometries, shapes and motion and knows just a couple of definitions of the things.

      There won't be a valuable licensed robocar in the USA that can't get a license in a major city. City driving has all the difficulties that a good robocar needs to master, even for suburban driving. The same problems pop up in less dense areas as cities, just not as often.

Tesla is trying to solve the biggest possible problem in auto autonomy, L5 driving, using the least amount of hardware. Their plan to drive around and figure everything out on the fly is not gonna work in city driving. NYC shows they haven't even gotten to first base.
      Even Waymo, with over 40 sensors, including 29 cameras and 360-degree lidar on the roof, detailed custom maps, and millions of miles of professional training over years on specific city streets, knows they can't solve NYC in the short term. It's the ultimate challenge in the USA.

I say that in a few videos and it's not to be condescending but to highlight the risk in taking a low volume car like the S/X into this situation and the long wait times for parts for low volume cars as opposed to the shorter wait times for high volume cars like 3/Y. Owners that have owned multiple Teslas or have been owners for longer understand that distinction as they know that risk. This is why you see a lot of owners testing FSD in 3/Y instead of S/X they have higher risk tolerance where as S/X owners have lower tolerance based on wait time of parts majority.

    Great perspective from another place, thanks for the video; great job, awesome car. I see why people take the train! OMG. Totally different world here in the OC. It works really well here in Orange County, CA. We have wide streets with many lanes, very safe, very easy. More bike lanes than street parking, few vulnerable road users. Can drive an hour with 1-4 disengagements. Doesn't do well on left turns when there are multiple left turn lanes; I always tend to disengage on those. No more fantom breaking since switching to Tesla Vision. Used to be really bad with radar. Overall, it's amazingly fantastic. The Navigation data and route decision-making seems to be the same for FSD Beta vs non-beta

    First 3.5 minutes of commentary...oh so true! Holland Tunnel built 1920-1927, Lincoln Tunnel built 1934-1937. The Holland Tunnel is essentially one hundred years old! NY-NJ badly needs at least one more modern tunnel for vehicular traffic + one rail tunnel for AMTRAK, NE Corridor trains. The old PRR tunnel was built 1904-1908 and still is THE rail tunnel joining NY-NJ!

    New proposal: a few days ago you proposed the “school bus standard for comfort of the user. Consider adding the “grandfather standard” of comfort i.e. would grandpa feel comfortable having FSD drive him to a store or to a nearby city to visit with friends/family.
    That’s what I had in mind when I bought FSD 5 years ago.

    You say they should test on manhattan first and then it will all work out, it doesn't quite work that way :) but I believe you are in a real sense right anyway. Tesla AP started out trying to handle slight curves on simple country roads and that's just not the way to approach it. So starting with something as messy as the worst of manhattan can show you what you need to handle for it to work and then wont be lured into simpler solutions that wont last to the end. What's needed is a general driver and only a mindset able to tackle that should be in charge.

    • @BlackTesla
      @BlackTesla  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. Allow me to retort, it's exactly like that 😆 solving complex problems involves solving smaller ones in the process. If the goal is to get around country roads they've succeeded and the car can do that well. If the goal was to conquer a complex city environment then they solve the country road, busy city, construction, and many other use cases. Also, AP was not started trying to handle country roads it started with the aspiration to handle highway driving on-ramp to off-ramp and all the complexities required for that. I know this because I was one of the lucky few to test the first builds of Autopilot outside of employees. The ambition quickly grew beyond that which became the basis for why mobileye was both selected snd why their relationship deteriorated. But I digress, I hear what you're saying

    • @charliedoyle7824
      @charliedoyle7824 2 года назад

      I agree Dan, they have to conquer city driving to have anything of value. FSD won't get any valuable license in an empty rural area. If some place in North Dakota does give them a license, it won't be valuable enough to matter.
      If they can't conquer even a mid-size city, they can't conquer driving. All the problems that occur in cities also can pop up in suburbs and small towns, but not as often.
      And if Tesla is serious about having an L5 robocar that can really go anywhere, they obviously need to conquer the hardest city driving before they can get a license.

    • @BlackTesla
      @BlackTesla  2 года назад

      Don't be offended that's not the intention. What I meant is that parts are harder to come by so the wait is significantly longer than a 3/Y which are produced exponentially more than the S/X.

    I have a Model X 2017 which has challenges in navigating within Princeton, NJ area (local roads). I'm not sure how all those youtubers are getting such a smooth (in my view) drive around. I do agree there is some improvement in Left turns but why right turns has so much jerky turns which I don't get it.
    accelerates too fast to catch up posted speed or applies break too hard coming to stop sign or signal lights. This happens due to it doesn't slow down coming to those stop situations.
