    Really appreciate the conversation on post 9-11 internal agency change and issues.
    Thanks Team House for bringing these silent professionals on your show. You guys are the only ones who aren't solely interviewing military special operations operators.

    Outstanding episode guys. I will buy his book if no other reason than to support a gov't employee who is willing to speak honestly about our current gov't failings (without implementing political bias) that can have such a critical impact on our lives. Highly unusual stance from a great guy. His observations from the his initial days at the CIA about prejudice are frankly unsurprising. The CIA was created as the ultimate old boys club in the 1940's in which entry was only allowed if you met specific criteria. The mentality being that certain people, if they were like you, would not be likely to spill secrets. Heck, that was the age in which our nation imprisoned its own citizens in camps if you were of asian/Japanese origin. No real surprise that it would take a long time to change that way of thinking in the CIA. Food for thought; A mentor of mine started his career on Wall Street in the boiler room days of the 1980's. After 5 years his Boss hinted to him that he wasn't going to be promoted nor would he ever be promoted very far up the ladder, due to him "celebrating the New Year" on a different day than the majority of rest of the company. (Translation - My friend/mentor was not Jewish as was the rest of his company.) The fact being that prejudice exists everywhere for different reasons and it is our job as citizens to help people see the error in their way of thought. Very happy to see that Doug toughed it out at CIA. He certainly paved the way for alot of other people to follow.

      I kind of HATED the PURE LEFTIST flavor of MANY, like BRENNAN, who voted for COMMUNIST GUS HALL, in the 1976 election! So, the CIA, held interest for me, BUT DEVOTION to The UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION held my ZEAL back WAY TO FAR!
      Being a "diverse CULTURE" is one thing - being a COMMUNIST TRAITOR is another! I am NOT talking about THIS GENTLEMAN, but those who "switch allegiances" for MONETARY GAIN, like I feel JOHN BRENNAN has/does!

      CIA was basically an off shoot of the U.S. Army's OSS. Majority of the CIA case officers were former Army intelligence officers. Like in any organization, there will be a good ole boys club, but the basic criteria was being a prior intelligence officer in the military. Calm down with your conspiracy assumptions.

    It used to be the height of bad taste for individuals in UK/US covert jobs to talk about the things they did. RUclips, and celebrity culture in general, seems to really have diminished the integrity of certain units. I get that it's fascinating to people not from that world, but it still makes me wince a little seeing how many SF and intelligence guys are flogging books all over social media.

    • @pectenmaximus231

      I think a certain amount is good though. In the total absence, there’s too much room for doubting the role that intelligence plays, or casting suspicions on it.

      Transparency is absolutely needed

    • @OngoGablogian185
      @OngoGablogian185 Год назад +8

      @@EndoftheBlock7224 Transparency in the form of political oversight is arguably necessary in a democracy. The UK, for example, has no external oversight of SF operations. As such, no one, outside of a select few, knows the extent and nature of certain missions. What we don't need, is former members trying to get rich or gain credibility through giving fragmented, often false, and individual accounts of their time in these units to the public.

    Did anyone work out who "Alex" is? I figure it's a woman, as Doug is very careful to avoid using pronouns, which he probably wouldn't do in the case of a man. I also assume that the incorrectly renditioned person was Khalid al-Masri. But that's as far as I got.

    With all due respect. Cia guy trys to portray himself as a cowboy in the book. He was this rough nd tumble street guy that leads from the front, he kicks ass nd takes names. When in actuality he gets so offended by mean words he decides to include that at the beginning of the book. Bottom line is man up. Brush that shit off and push on. Ive been discriminated against many times in my life. Those incidents dont define me.

      My step Dad would’ve knocked him out. Of course, he was the kind of OSS (former Navy Corman) turner Cambridge medical school type guy - a Dulles tapped OSS protege, who actually saved peoples lives, namely one Middle East Sultan’s son. Those shadowy Bay of Pigs days, which still haven’t been fully un-redacted and written about. Now he’s passed away, and sadly only his cronies and the stars on the wall know the truth behind those days. This interview feels like a fluff piece by a guy with a childhood chip on his shoulder, trying to convince people that former Marines turned CIA case officers are “nice guys.” 🙄. Seriously - Inviting your marks over to your house to play pretend that you actually liked them. Sadistic and cruel for your kids to be gaslight in their own home. Bunch of windbags. I think Shrek had it right. “I don’t think after helping your type of guys, that I ever want to help you guys again.” Coming from a real man who ran solo missions in Afghanistan. Chicago tough. Now that’s what’s missing is guys like him, Hell on Wheels WWII Tank Brigade - Gramps Fury, Devil D. and a few others.

      Most of these guys are full of shit. If they were true whistleblowers they would have done it when they had something to lose, not decades later after they got their pension (oh and by the way the CIA has to review, redline, redact and sign off before the book can be published). This is nothing but bullshit.
