Seat weaving remains a popular for many weaving hobbyists, especially those who restoring rustic furniture. Chinese seagrass is one popular medium used being woven ropes that look like classic twisted rush. Much cheaper than rush fiber made from cattails, twisted seagrass was often used in school woodworking classes, where children were taught the checkerboard patterns to weave. The four by four open weave pattern is a derivative of the more basic checkerboard patterns, providing open spaces in the weave.

Wow, what an easy to follow tutorial! Thank you, in particular for explaining what happens on the bottom, this helped me tremendously as my project was at a complete standstill after the warp being I was so confused about that separate strand. For days I searched videos/tutorials and you were the only one that mentioned it, very helpful, thanks again!

Thank you! I am so glad it was helpful to you. When I learned how to make this style stool, I had the same problem with the look on the bottom of the seat. Fortunately, I had a teacher with me to explain it. So, when I made the video I figured if I had a problem understanding the underside, then others might have the same problem....so I made sure to mention it.

Thank you. I found it very old little child's rocking chair with no seat so I'm going to try something like this to make a new seat for it -it's pretty much square, this will be interesting, it's for a very small child so I think it'll be strong enough thank you.

You will be amazed at how strong the seagrass can be. I have a bench woven with seagrass and sit on it all the time! I would love to see a picture of your project when you get it done.

An excellent tutorial Beverly, one I could follow and understand as a I am a novice. Just a quick question Beverly, if my chair seat is not square but is a trapezium shape where the front and rear rails are parallel but but the front rail is longer , how does this affect the weft? Do I now need to add more than two turns around the front rail?
