aim for negative budget. sell your rims and buy some diamond racing steelies (10" rims for around $70 a corner) I think you can sell the bmw head unit for about twice the cost of a basic head unit. replace the passenger seat with an eBay special and you are about there. spend the extra budget on making your beemer the ultimate mad max prop (or whatever you choose, mad Max might be the easiest).

Love this new series! just a helpful tip, if you soak the e-brake shoes in oil for a day and clean them with brake clean before reinstalling them it'll change the coefficient of friction of the pad material making them supper grabby and lock with less effort. Its a quick budget mod if your stuck with the factory e-brake.

Why not mount the wheel in the trunk trophy truck style? Would have been cooler

+sethmo38 I agree, kinda like Mad Max rugged style too, since it would be on a car.

great progress ! little trick I've learned with headlights this only works if they've yellowed if the clear is burned doesn't help as much but a quick wipe down with thinner get rid of the yellow haze make them clear again then a quick light sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper and a quick buff and they're good as new again I've liked this method because it doesn't remove much of the factory clear coat off the headlight !

I have an E46 and have a good understanding of this system, I have adjusted this dual cable system and it is rather tricky to get both rear drums to engage at the same time. By removing the handle, you have removed the mount used by the adjustment nuts and by doing so you have eliminated half of the adjustment abilities.
Have you guys tested each rear wheel individually and set the rear shoe adjustments?
Either you edited out a whole lot of fussing around with getting that to work correctly, you took a shot in the dark and somehow it is magically tuned, or there is a chance that it will not work as planned. Good luck guys.

This is 'B is for build' so a shot in the dark would be correct procedure. :D

I was just about to mention about the e-brake. It takes a lot more force to lock the rear with a cable than using a brake line system. I think its possible that the e-brake may of failed in more places later down the line. Good call using the OEM and adapting it :)

+Fearless Garage Media haha yeah thats for sure not the way to do it, i wish the brake lines fit to something at the autoparts store. We could have just "made it work" but with the nature of brake lines like they are and the whole losing brakes possibility, i didnt really wanna risk it.

Important to note with the Multimeter to always start high on the scale and dial it down if you get no readings, or you risk blowing the fuse inside it.
I may or may not have blown more than one fuse in my multimeter at college...

  • @Bahookers

FWIW wetsanding from 600(if pretty bad) up to 2500 then rubbing compound then plastix polish will make the headlights absolutely perfect.

The issue with the odd hydro e brake thread size, I've seen a guy take any tapered bolt that fits and then with a drill press, drilled a hole through the top of it and then ran the brake line through the bolt and then flared the line.
I guess it's a little late but maybe next time. Cheers.

I couldn't tell but when you pulled the ebrake handle I didn't see the lines move much. you should mount the ends higher on the handle to get more travel off the cable extensions. you won't have to pull super far either.

Restoring head lights? Easy! Grab some 320 wet sanding paper keep it wet go at the head light (horizontal motion) after you do that for about 7-10 minutes you get some abrasive compound put it on your head light take a budding wheel go at it and wipe it off! BAM good as new!

Hey Chris, been drifting a late model E36 for 4 years now, thought id give you some input.
If you want to use the stock handbrake Jubilee clip a cut off piece of bmx handle bar to the lever with the handle removed. If you tighten the clip enough it will hold the release button down in the open position. Its all we used to use in the early days. You will stretch the cables really quick though!
the e46 is twin rear brake lines. Have a look at this link it will tell you everything you need to know:
    www.trampdrift.co.uk/forum/topic/2322-fitting-a-hydraulic-hand-brake/
The unions you need are usually:
    1x 3/8 UNF x 24TPI Male 3/16 Pipe Fitting
    1x 7/16 UNF x 20 TPI Male 3/16 Pipe Fitting
    2x 3/8 UNF x 24TPI T Piece 3 Way Fitting
Your indicators shouldn't be on all the time, i think its because you might have the ground and possitive the wrong way around, though not 100% sure
Anyway keep it up, hope this info helps!

Hey guys I don't want to be that guy but I would suggest you do something different with that spare. That 1/4" all thread is not going to hold that spare in an accident and then you have a 40lb tire flying into the cab. Put it back in the well space, bolt it down and just make a taller brace if you want to keep the brace. Not to mention putting the spare high just increases your COG.

  • @adubs.

Next time you do a headlight restore just get some 2000 grit sand paper and meguiars plastx. its the same deal as with the kits and costs about the same but you get so many more uses out of it. plus I think the plastx does a better job. The kits do a good job normally anyway but as the buffing compound comes off in the weather it will start to get a little dull again so having the plastx means you can just re buff it again. Just my opinion.

+B is for Build You could have used "Off" or a bug spray with DEET. I didn't believe it, but it restores the headlight much clearer than polishing. That's if it's an old crappy headlight you don't care about. It takes off some UV coating, so not great for super long term. None the less I've done this on a few beaters and headlights have been clear for over a year.
