I went to the ape caves once when it had snowed so much that the upper parking lot was closed. So we parked in the lower lot and walked up. On the way I noticed that off to my left there was a low guard rail along the side of the road and that the trees on the other side were actually quite tall and I was seeing the middle section of them. I looked over the edge and was surprised to see the ground level dropped right there making a huge rock and boulder strewn bowl in the forest floor that the trees were growing from the bottom of and some out of the cliff side just over the guard rail. I stepped over the rail and got down on my stomach to crawl to the edge to see down and was surprised again that there appeared to be a couple of cave openings in the cliff face that went into the mountain under the paved road about 50 yards before the upper parking lot. I have heard that there are many unmarked caves and openings in the woods around the ape caves as well.

So, about stalagmites and stalactites and how to keep them straight. I was told as a little girl by my Mom, this mnemonic: Stalactites have a "c" for ceiling and they have to hold on "tite" to stay attached, while stalagmites have a "g' for ground, since they don't have to hold on tight, they grow big and "mite"-y.

I helped discover prehistoric Saber-tooth Tigers.
Televised afterward in News At 11 by a female
who followed us down into unexplored territory.

There are quite a few more caves near the ape caves, witch are actually near Mt st helens. There are also 2 longer lava tube caves near trout lake that are not well known.

they should stay that way too......good stuff down there....all good things are eventually ruined by the masses....if you love something or somewhere the worst thing you can do is post about it on the internet....the internet has been the worst thing to happen to nature and the outdoors since the advent of the internal combustion engine.
that said, i'm an mountaineer and explorer, the only spelunking i've really done are the ones you're likely talking about, was a pretty cool experience, once of the caves we went into went down for over two miles, i hope they are as i remember them and are still accessible.....i am glad to hear they are still being kept pretty quiet.....i just wish the rest of washington state would have been kept quiet too....was better when everyone thought that washington only offered rain and assholes....remember when the seattle freeze used to be a thing? lol

Go view nearby Lizard Lake talus caves. I find caves using thermal imagery.
Also see: Horsethief LIDAR Flythrough. I was 10 miles into some of that.

So far you have not mentioned "Mel's Hole" southwest of Ellensburg.. Yes, I know where it is and no I'm not telling besides the government bought the property and built a building over it, then fenced it off. I found out about it from a mining friend of mine who had been a little over 800 ft. down in it and said it kepy going. People used to dump their old refrigerators and appliances down it just to hear them go out of ear shot. A gold minerhad staked a claimon it in 1903 because he found a vein of gold just below the basault layet.

to +150 miles of completed cave cartography. More
than one provisioned base camp underground also.

I recommend WV. Where bolted dome climbs
exceed 500 feet to explore further up. I paid
to obtain monthly updates from such folks.
