I like to get most things right in the final Mix so that my Mastering chain is simple. I generally get away with an EQ, Compressor and Limiter in my Mastering chain. If I had to use all these plugins in my Mastering, I would go back and resolve most of the issues in my Mix.
That probably means you need to cut your lo-mids (typically the second harmonics) from all your instrument channels, and hi-pass anything that doesn't have any useful bass - and then repeat the same with your busses.
Thanks for watching! Like Kevin commented, check out the harmonic above your fundamental, usually 250Hz. will mask higher frequencies, causing a lack of definition. SageAudio.com
Amazing video, while I do not want to be a full time mix/master engineer, but I want to polish my Vinyl and Tape Rips for that sweet, warm, analogue musical sound using these concepts. Can you plan a course on audio restoration explaining the concepts for what we do what we do, using the right tools and setting the right goals. Thank You!!!!
Thanks for watching! Maybe I could in the future - restoring tapes is a difficult task though, especially if they're older. From what I understand when visiting mastering studios that performed restorative work, they have to "bake" or heat up the tapes significantly first, which gave them 1 to 2 tries to properly convert the signal to a digital one before the magnetic particles shed. But if you're using tape that's still in good shape, I'd recommend trying to record it into your DAW as best you can (use high quality cables, a 96kHz 24-bit sampling rate) and then only use an EQ to change the sound until it has the qualities that you want
@@sageaudio spot on, though my tapes have been kept well, but I still need to wet clean and play end-to-end few times, before they play in their full glory. But I believe that with modern technology we can have the tape sound and, can remove noise and other imperfections and that is where I found this video a perfect match (all your videos are fab though!!). Looking forward to a course on mastering with focus on vinyl and tape restoration. Possible there is a huge user base no one is catering to, but very silent one though, probably settling at getting the rip right only. I want to go a couple of steps further. Cheers...
This record needed a mix revision. You should never have to do this much in the mastering phase. I’m not saying this sounded bad by any means but just that these issues are better solved in a mix.
@@ChrisDN That is actually a common practice for mastering engineers. I’m the case of this I imagine most people watching this are mastering their own music and in that case they have the opportunity to fix most of these issues in the mix.
Hello! I just gotta question - in all around the internet I cannot find any free/free trial available compressor like Presswerk - with mid/side processing. Do you maybe know anything like this, or im forced to buy Presswerk?;)
Great video, thank you. But please, what is the song you are using as an example? Heard it used in White Sea Studio's video on Ozone 10 as well and several people asked what the song was, but there were no real answers, just joke ones. Tried googling the lyrics but that turned up nothing whatsoever.
@ 1:20 how does a frequency of 250hz mask a freqency up in 2.5khz, I was under the impression masking happens with frequencies in the same space in the frequency spectrum?
If you're looking to de-ess the mid and side images separately, you can always use Patcher to split up the mid and the side and process each with Maximus attached. Also, you don't need fancy plugins to do the magic for you, you just need the right chain of stock plugins.
Very helpful video 👏👏. Why you don't use the true peak on Pro L? Do you use any other true peak limiter before uploading the song on platforms? Spotify recommends -1db for -14lufs and -2db for louder mixes? What is your recommendation for that?
Don't follow that, send it as loud as you can without clipping your signal, they have their own procressing to turn it down so don't worry about it too much
Thanks for watching Kingsley! When we master for clients we use analog equipment. But using software like some of the processing shown in this video works well too. SageAudio.com

Most of the streaming platforms require -14 LUFS, - dB true peak, so - 9 LUFS master would be turned down big time, so for streaming i would aim for -14 LUFS.
Some masters require it to bind everything together. It’s not a common occurrence; but some less than stellar mixes are disconnected and the elements feel disparate. It’s another tool in the toolbox that works when needed. Some people would never think to do that; but it happens from time to time in mastering. Again… more with amateur and semi-pro mixes that need help.
Man i swear, you doing Hits everyday, i've been working on this for 8-9 years and You have no idea of how big is mi knowledge now watching your videos
you are the goats! just made the best master of my whole career
Interesting with 250 masking 2500 - would love to hear more about this concept!

You're telling me. If you're deessing a 'final' mix for vocal sibilance, that mix needs a rework

Yeah I was thinking like how do you even get these issues in the first place? You can’t fix bad mixing in a mastering phase

Incorrect, learn more about streaming platforms and you'll see your statement is totally false. No one does -14 and every one does -8 or so.
most music is 8-10 LUFS. Spotify is very smart and can handle themselves.

Reverb on the master??? LOL great way to completely obscure the intentions of the mix

First
how to master a song that's mixed properly: step 1: limiter until it's -14 LUFS. that's it.
wrong -14 lufs is quiet just say you don't know what you're doing.
always horrible level matching
