    I am a 52 year old musician, writer, producer who ACTUALLY plays 5 instruments and I see absolutely nothing wrong with using someone else's prerecorded loops and samples. I started playing music by learning other people's bass, guitar or piano riffs and phases and made it my own. That is the age old process of creating. I also make beats and although I can create my own loops(Yeah, I even sell loops and samples) but sometimes I just like what I'm hearing and there are times when I don't change a thing, I just build around the loop or sample. I don't even care...as long as it's royalty free and sounds good. Your kinda young so I'm surprised at your initial take on that other dudes methods to make beats. I'd expect that from a cat my age...just being real. But, you acknowledged the rigidity of your thinking and that's what counts.

      There are hundreds maybe even thousands of big time beats we hear that have loops, ESPECIALLY samples from other songs or people pre made loop kits... I do feel somewhat skeptical about using someone else’s loops from a pack because there’s thousands of other people who gonna use them, but if yours pops, this is one of the most competitive businesses, USE EM!!! If you catch a big time names ear w it, what’s anyone gonna say? They gonna bounce to it!!!

    OH MY GOODNESS Scaler is gonna help with my EP so much, just purchased it!
    I have a few beats I bought that had samples which I wasn't aware of & have been trying to come up with alternative melodies to pair with the new drumming patterns & while I'm fine with using scales & creating melodies, this is gonna open up a whole new world of mood possibilities for my production, thank you so much for sharing this!! 🔥

    Even as a music theory obsessed producer, I find Scaler to be insanely good. I didn't take as long to check the scale's chords and it helps my piano playing too. Learning the sound and usage of chords is so intuitive with Scaler.
    You're the GOAT for recommending this

    I started listen to Curtis again recently after being on a hiatus due to beat-block. One of my biggest issues was that I wanted to find new and easier ways of making music from scratch but I didn't want to "cheat". I'm now starting to embrace that motto: It's not about the gear, it's about the ear! 👂🏾

  • @m.e44

    You just demonstrated how knowing BASIC MUSIC THEORY would REALLY HELP and actually SPEED UP UR FLOW - When you were in the piano roll messin around tryna get it right I instantly knew what was wrong with it and I would go right into the wrong keys and move them VS. a person that just keeps moving it around and hit and miss - A little music theory will take you a long long way and greatly speed up your work flow - Just learn how basic scales work and why some notes dont work with each other - Then you time at the piano roll will be greatly increased PLUS you will understand WHICH CHORDS give off WHICH EMOTIONS so that will also make you more accurate at expressing yourself - You can learn music theory in about like 3 DAYS only, just dedicate them on RUclips to learning it and 3 days and you can learn music theory for the rest of your life - you are not gona be a master obviously but it will give u ALL THE BASICS - thanks Curtiss it was a great video!

    as long as just don’t directly throw in a loop off the internet into your beat, then sampling is ok. As long as you try your hardest to make that loop your own and give it new life. That’s the beauty of sampling, you can take a sample and give it a whole new vibe through adding effects EQing etc. I think Curtis is right music should be fun and not difficult

    I don’t know if anyone is gonna pay attention to this but I wanna say thank you @Curtiss because I used to be one of the producers to say oh I’m not using loops and so on and then my mind changed once I started back rapping and wanted to produce for myself don’t get me wrong I can make melodies but I’m more inspired off of loops it makes the process fun and now i see why everyone is using them because music is a collaborative process if you noticed when people started using loops more so many hits have been made in this last year alone because it’s fun again we are not producing for other producers we are doing this to make great RECORDS it’s all about the feel I say that to say this DONT OVER THINK IT JUST HAVE FUN!

    I'm glad you put the sample technique vs splice melodic sound splicing technique together. It's the same in many ways. If you just use it right out the box then that's lazy and lacks creativity. If it works for people then fine. I'm different. Just create the best you can. Forgive me if I missundertood, but the only issue I got from Cassius Jay's interview was that he condoned jacking another producer's sound from the studio sessions (stems) he got his hands on. That's an ethical NO-NO in my book. Unless I'm sound designing for you or have an arrangement like these sites (ex. Splice.com). Otherwise, it's no different than sampling an original master without their concent. On the other hand if you are willing to hand over your sound set, session stems, and other files then you are open to get jacked in the first place. Jus keepin it 100.

I appreciate the fact that you’re taking this legal approach to producing and the fact that you share all your experiences with us. 2 years ago I remember clicking on your vid that taught me how to count bars and its amazing how much the quality of your vids have progressed and evolved. In the past few days of my subscription I have learned so much and I’m getting better with my production. I appreciate you so much for these vids and I look forward to learning more from you in the weeks to come. Thank you again. Also if you could give us a tutorial on compression and side chaining that would be amazing. Maybe you already have and I just haven’t seen it but if you haven’t please try make one cause I feel like you’d have a different approach to it and we’d all understand it more. Peace and Love

    I feel ya bro. I just gettin’ over my “superior musical self” and starting to, at least, keep the creativity muscles exercised using preset loops in my music.

  • @quotetheproducer6191
    @quotetheproducer6191 6 лет назад +54

    Whether it be boom bap, or trap, I always chop samples. J. Dilla, Pete rock, and 9th Wonder have conditioned me to never just keep shit the same. I don't even use the tempo finding feature anymore. Just alter the pitch, and tempo, and chop the shit out of it. I've never worked with melodic loops(will very soon once I get the money for splice), but I'd probably end up just doing the same thing. I think more of the part I would never do when it comes to Cassius J.'s methods, are use the exact drum patterns and techniques from other beats. Either way, I ain't ever gonna knock producer methods, cuz I feel like everyone else has their own creative process, and there aren't really any rules to it.(Plus he making way more money than I ever will doing this shit lmao)

    • @KnockSquared
      @KnockSquared 6 лет назад +8

      Scratch that last part of your post off. You NEVER know how much you will be making a year from now. Remember ...one beat you produce could literally send you on your way to becoming financially set for life (yeah even making more money that Cassius)

    • @quotetheproducer6191
      @quotetheproducer6191 6 лет назад +1

      KnockSquared Yeah. Hope to get there one day. I gotta start putting in more money, but right now I barely got enough to keep my beat store up and running. But i get it. Putting the time and effort in will get results. As of now, just being as resourceful as possible but once I get that job, Ill be able to make some more business moves(ads, promotion and whatnot)

    Haven't used scaler specifically but i feel like autoscale programs are good for writers block. It feels like cheating until you realize 90% of songs use the same chords which is why they can't be copyrighted, it's all about how you use it. Early rap beats were nothing but drum break loops and barely chopped samples lol.

    Hey Curtis if u drop ur sample in to the Newtone plugin, you can see all the root notes being played by the chords. It's much more precise than Edison because let's say it's not on 432hz... You can take it up or down to the nearest semitone with Edison.
    Anyone who samples and uses fl studio should really look into Newtone.

    I hate to step on your sponsor, but if you want similar functionality with a slight bit more effort, it already exists in your DAW. I use ableton live, but I am sure this works in FL as well. If you have a tuner plugin (stock in ableton and called "tuner"), put it into any sample or instrument as an effect and press play. The tuner will display the pitch and you can just write it down and use a chart of scales to find where this sample will fit in. That is how I start a track if I am starting from a sample. Your sponsor is a dope plugin too, and much easier than my method, just putting it out there for people tight on money that want what that plugin offers with a little more work.

    I just started making music again, I’m 36. I have immediately been confronted with this new era of loops and samples I didn’t know about years ago.. in my head I thought but that’s not original it’s somebody else loops or whatever. Then I imagined a stock go studio file. We can all use those same loops and kicks, so what’s the difference if we just use more quality samples from splice!? They are all just samples we try to manipulate. Thanks again for your outlook and knowledge!

    in my opinion. i have 2 modes as a music producer.
    1.sampled based ( Old LP's)
    and 2. original creation( since I can play instruments)
    I don't use splice but i have gone on their site to get inspired.
    to each his own. like one person said. "they're no rules to this sh*t"
    everyone has their own approach to creating music.
    my question is, does the original composer from the splice loop get their cut if the records sells?

      also once you change the pitch and add effects and chop it up your sound will be different from anyone using it.

      Hell yeah, When I started out as a producer I literally downloaded completely random sample packs just so I could sit down and listen to different producers approach a certain sample! Cymatics is super good combining both Melody Loops with the original preset that comes with some of the packs. Listening is golden

    Thought I would chime in, Curtis you can bring the sample into Melodyne also to transpose and change notes. I use melodyne to change music and vocals to sing/play melodies that are different from the originals. - Dane Riazer

    I’m good on the loops, Difference between splice and old vinyls is the purpose for each material. I won’t shame anyone if they use loops. Just won’t use em myself. I’ll def listen to melody loops for inspiration or to study but that’s it.

  • @ThinkingOutLoud2012

    Also, if you space out the chords in the playlist of Scaler before you drag them into FL, it will make it easier when you have to move them around in the Piano Roll
