Nice. One of the mental pictures I carry with me from 20 years and change in the Coast Guard is sitting in the jump seat of an HH-3F out of San Diego, going to look at an oil slick or something. Just sitting there suspended in space with this whirly thing going on overhead. . . Didn’t seem natural. Wings of some kind would be comforting.
Got used to it. Our polar icebreaker aviation detachment (a couple years later) was dominated by ex-Army pilots. They had all survived at least one tour in Vietnam, and those gentleman could fly a helicopter. Single-engine HH-65s, and they could approach the flight deck like it was on rails.

Its much improved over MSFS2020 but there are some big issues, for example if you try to land on some type of object with edges once you get over it you take off like a rocket and as you noticed the ground effects are abit crazy but the feeling otherwise is 10 times better than in the previous sim, the helicopter atleast do what you expect smoothly because they now have proper support for helicopters in the physics engine, it will probably need months or maybe a year plus to mature but I'm much more hopeful now than I ever was before.
I do wonder if they model the stability systems in some of these airframes because that makes a big difference, heck, I did not even know the Robinsons had any such systems until recently.
Carenado did this R66, not known for their deep simulations tbh, they make pretty planes and stuff but its not PMDG or Milviz / Blackbird... latter changed their name... for their civ work.

I tried it for the first time now, feels a lot better than in FS2020, much more like DCS. Ground effect seems too high indeed (but who am I to judge? 🙃). Despite using a helicopter with wheels I wasnt able to roll fwd/back with the cyclic, thats weird, I didnt manage to turn off brakes, but maybe thats just me not knowing the settings(I have set up a switch for that though)

I’ve been playing this for about two weeks. I’ve done quite a bit on the plane side of the training. I tried the first helicopter training and couldn’t get through it. It was super glitchy. They still have some work to do. I’m hoping for an update. Thanks for the video!

  • @plokkum

There’s a reason I didn’t use MSFS2024 to make my helicopter flying instruction videos.
Also, try to autorotate that R66. Prepare for massive torque 😂

  • @theussmirage

2024 is a big upgrade on helicopters, its a massive improvement, still issues there but they fly so much smoother and feels way more proper than they ever did in 2020

    @walley2637 День назад +1

really have to check all of your control settings in msfs 2024, i found a lot of the default settings seemed to have some things tied to 2 or more different things. like my collective was also controlling fuel mixture, pedals inverted, rudder ultra sensitive but turning sensitization down made it worse so i had to turn it way to the + and it smoothed out lol. who would have thought?

More relevant comment. . . My main issue with MSFS 2024 is the default control binding conflicts. I am starting to pick up speed a bit, but every time I try a new aircraft it takes me about an hour to sort out the conflicts.
On the helicopter (forget which one) it was the collective. Wouldn’t move in response to the throttle block I set, then jumped randomly to full. Just need to put the time into resolving conflicts.

Do you still think DCS is the best sim for helicopters overall? I have a lot of hours in DCS helicopters which allowed me to fly a UH-1H in real life through a family friend. I'm gonna get the chance to fly an R-22 here soon and I'm curious what you think the best sim/heli combo is best to train with.

The Bell 407 acts okay in FS2020 but i 2024 it becomes uncontrollable after a 20 or 30 minute flight and starting to set up for landing. It spins like the tail rotor gear box fell off. Try that one.

tbh for me personally, if i want a flight sim for a realistic physics.. i would choose X-Plane, but in term of graphics its bad, i hope they improve fs24 because its legit looks the same as fs20

I don't fly in real life, but squirrely is the only way I can describe flying the helicopters in FS2024. It just feels so jerky and out of control, like there's no weight behind anything

Ah, msfs. Famous for its terrain which is pretty if it ever loads in, it's buildings which are incorrect and ugly, even if they load in, and its flight model, which is so bad for most modules that you wonder if the devs have ever been near an aircraft.
