  • westfarthingwoo... This video shows the materials required, and the process involved in making a carbide lathe tool at home. These tools are very inexpensive to make, and they work every bit as well as a store bought tool. For the same price as a single full size tool, four or more can be made in the shop just as easily.

    I have looked at most of the videos on Carbide Cutters. I used pry-bars from Aldi for the tool shafts, for the cutters I purchased old worn files for €1 each at a local car- booth sale. I softened the files by putting them in a fire (wood burning stove) I was then able to cut and bore them to whatever shape I wanted. after cutting , shaping and sharpening I hardened the piece by heating to bright red, plunged it in water to hold the hardness then cleaned it up and heated it again to a straw colour to temper the piece. I then did a final polishing and sharpening on a carpenters oil stone, diamond hone will do same job. Lovely sweet cutters and when they lose their edge its just a matter of a quick rub on the flat surface to bring them back to sharpness again.

    Went to my local iron and metal dealer and got the blanks of hot rolled 1/2 inch bar for a buck a foot. Something to check out. Worked well. I had picked up a box of 10 cutters earlier. Made the handles out of oak. It was what I had in the scrap bin,

      That's excellent Kenzie. I am going to have to take a look and see what they have in stock now. When I made my carbide lathe tools, they did not have a round cutter, so I ended up buying the EWT cutter, which was about $20 I think. I am sure that the Global Tooling round cutters are far less expensive. Thanks for sharing that with everyone.

    I found this site with a round cutter. Do you think it would work for a finisher? They also have diamond cutters.

    On the steel length you had said you put 6-8" in handle, but how much is sticking out?

    • @westfarthingwoodworks4882
      @westfarthingwoodworks4882  7 лет назад

      You can let as much stick out as you want. On mine, I have about 8" past the handle. It's a little on the long side, but it helps if I need to get into something like a vase or deep goblet. Once you get past the half way point, it can be hard to keep the tool steady on the rest. If you make bowls that are 4 inches deep, then 8" of open tool will help give you more leverage.
