Followed your recommendation on the Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2. Excellent choice. True there is a very bright screen. Now I have two Toughbooks - a CF-30 was already on hand. That model has a very nice keyboard.
I recently started using a 2011 MacBook Air that I installed Windows 10 on for ham radio stuff out in the field and it surprisingly performs better than the Surface 3 I was using before (probably because the latter uses eMMC flash storage instead of the actual SSD the MBA uses). The fan(s?) basically go full bore, though, not to mention that it took a bit of searching online to be able to power the thing off of the same solar/LiFePO4 setup my portable radio setup uses without an inverter. Anyway, I might play with the M1 MBA at some point once Windows support stabilizes. The prospect of 15+ hours of use without fans (and standard USB-C power) is nice.

For those of us doing basic CHIRP and RT Systems software, the Evolve III is more than enough. Speed is irrelevant for my needs. I can load software on thumb drives is needed. 4GB is plenty of RAM. The 64GB eMMC has 13 GB after preparing/loading what I need. I have newer, more powerful laptops available for all other needs. Not looking for back packing ops. I also bought a 4 port USB 3.1 hub for $25. That gives me 6 ports, 4 ports free. One used for mouse, one other for USB hub.
A great laptop for ham radio and field use is a Panasonic Toughbook, these are ruggedized laptop commonly used by police, fire, and contractors and construction! I’ve seen these come up on eBay and Amazon used or refurbished for around $300 with fairly decent specs!
I think a new criteria to be considered when choosing a portable computer for use with ham radio is "Will it fit in the Icom backpack for the IC-705?" None of my existing notebooks would so I got a used Surface Pro like 2 in 1 system from Dell that does.
Paid 150$CDN for a great condition Panasonic CF-52 (Core i5 520M), put a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, maxed out the ram to 8GB, and bought a brand new battery. Badass field rig that's super snappy running Windows 10. Runs SDRTrunk flawlessly. 73 DE VE9HV

Can you just briefly explain your audio chain you're using here in this setup? Your voice is nice and clear, and the compression isn't overblown with "loudness" like a lot of other live streamers and/or podcasters seem to do. Anyway, thanks again.
I don't understand what a ham radio operator needs a computer for. I try to find videos explaining it but instead I just see videos of people explaining software but not the need for a computer for a ham radio operator
Using raspberry pi for emergency field use post Cascadia earthquake. A big part of that is to use Winlink. Another big issue is extended grid down. Could be months. But a major change is a move to VARA which greatly improves throughout and robustness, but which to date is Windows only So looking for a Windows solution. Thanks for your info. If you have a small system with a single usb port, is it really a huge issue to add a usb hub?

Apple has had it for I don't know how long long before this video came out. I recently purchased an SDRPLAY RSP1A as my first SDR. I'm hooked and want to take my monitoring mobile. Can anyone please suggest the best SDR/Laptop combo to go mobile in a Jeep Wrangler? I have an Austin Spectra antenna in the Jeep for my scanner already. FREQUENCY RANGE 30-50, 150-174, 430-512, 806-896 MHz. So I may need a different one. I hope to hear: DMR, P25, Nexgen. Any advice ( especially re: the laptop ) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I would guess the new final fee for a ham license will be $50.00 . $ 35.00 for FCC and $15.00 for Volunteer examiner.

That will be correct for a new license, though the total may vary slightly depending on which VEC handles the test. (ARRL-VEC charges $15, which is the maximum fee allowed. W5YI-VEC charges $14. Other VECs may vary.) Renewals will just pay the $35.

The Kenwood TM-V71A and TM-D710A have been remarkably long-lived radios; both have been on the market since 2007. It's not surprising that they are finally going to be discontinued; there may be some components in them that are no longer available. Let's hope that Kenwood introduces suitable replacements.
WSJT running JT65 and now QRA64 for EME can be a bit more cpu/memory intensive due to doing deeper processing of the signal. There are settings to let it run on slower PC's though. On my AMD A8-5500 APU I have to back it down form max for example or things slow to a crawl. Not that many running EME but keep it in mind.
The base model of the Surface Go and Surface Go 2 (the ones with 4GB RAM) should be avoided; 4GB really isn't enough for Windows and the storage is a slow eMMC drive. The 8GB models are a significant improvement, both because of the additional RAM and because they have a real SSD (a rather good one at that). The top model of the Surface Go 2 (with the m3-8100Y instead of the Pentium Gold) will serve well; it's faster than that GPD you love. If you already own a Chromebook, try out the option of running Linux applications on it; you might be able to cover your needs that way. But unless you're an expert, don't BUY one for ham radio.

I have been looking hard for a great deal. And I found one! Best buy has a 15.6" HP for sub 400 that's gaming grade.
