A really good hack is to use it for when you slightly overbake and burn the bottoms of cookies or biscuits. After cooling just grate the bottoms to remove the majority of burnt portions!
I definitely agree that quality matters. For anyone that's about to buy a new grater - test out the grip first at the store. See if it's comfortable to hold while squeezing or applying pressure. I've bought two that looked ergonomic and had good reviews but also had sharp plastic/metal edges on the handle that ended up cutting/scratching the sides of my hand after only two potatoes. The one I have now has a soft rubber handle and it makes the work so much easier.
Nice vid; What gripes my grapes is; I bought my grater back in 1978 over the years it got less sharp. Now; after I bought a new one I learned using a tiny file (I bought a set) you can sharpen most of the grater. Also the discoloration can be (reduced). One more thing: when grating lay the grater flat on the opposite side you are using; it works much easier!!!!
thanks so much for this video. I was so close to regreting getting a box grater instead of the microplane. Could you do a video on how to wash clean e box grater? one thing I hate about using the box grater is that it is hard to 'pick up' the residue pieces that get stuck in the holes.
This is literally the reason I am watching the video. I'm very inexperienced with cooking, and I find that there are always bits of veggies stuck in the small holes of the grater that I can't get off
Get one that is dishwasher safe, otherwise use a brush with a long handle and hard bristle to clean both sides of the grater. More importantly, wash the grater immediately after use so that food residue would not dry out and stick in the holes.
Got an old box grator from grand parants that was made in Hong Kong( hell if I know how old it is).. pressure fitted and rolled sheet metal of some kind. No plastic or anything on it. works great, and is soft enough to even be tuned a bit for thicker or thinner slices.. I don't bother though. Just used it for cheese on a couple sandwiches, and have a ton of other ideas.
I am going to make a video of how to grate different foods but holding them with a SAFEGRATE so you won’t cut yourself. You gave me some ideas ( laundry soap). Some use it to grate wax also for craft projects.
I guess you can use a hairdryer or other heat source to melt the beeswax. Just make sure not to let the melt wax drip everywhere or even worse, onto the heat source which could become a fire hazard.
She’s holding the grater wrong. The black plastic guard is supposed to be completely against your cutting board and one hand firmly holding down grater and food item on your other hard.
Does anyone ever show what they do with the pointless 4th side, that they call a grater, but it just looks like metal sticking out? All these years I thought it was for zesting, but have never used it in 50 years.

Good call!!!
Fun! I love my box grater and I use it often. The small side is also good for grating whole nutmeg and Cinnamon.
Thanks for the tips, Maribeth!

This was so cool, totally blew mind to see the sheer number of things I can do with this!
I’m super excited to use my grater correctly. Thank you!
This is one of the most useful videos I've ever seen on YT. Thank you!

Now my mashed potatoes taste like laundry soap!

Simple and direct 👍
Wow, Thanks!
You got me on the shredded butter.
Excellent tips, Nicole.
How do you protect your fingers? I always hit the tips of my fingers 💜
Which box grater did you buy? I’m trying to buy a box grater but I wanna make sure I buy the right one. I mainly plan to use it for veggies
Good info!! Many thanks!
4:49 it smells *grate*
This is life changing!
Wow I had no idea!!
I really loved this video, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank Dr.
Love it
Thank you
I bought it yesterday only. Hi from Singapore 🙋
Hi! Hope you like using it!
Love it!
Very good
Great pun at the end.
Which grater is this??
I use it to make homemade laundry detergent!
How can I keep vegetables from flying everywhere when I use my box grater?
You gotta find your calm Zen while doing the grating..
Yes... U produced a great presentation.. u get 3 gold stars... Ah... No.. you deserve 4 😊😊😊😊
Thank you that was Grate! Lol
Good
You didn't mention using the very small hole side to grate your while nutmeg.
I came here after listening to James Acaster's bit about using a Cheese Grater
I messed up my box grater on one side grating a block of beeswax to make waxed cloth. Is there any hope to get it off?
I guess you can use a hairdryer or other heat source to melt the beeswax.
Just make sure not to let the melt wax drip everywhere or even worse, onto the heat source which could become a fire hazard.
i use it to grate onions
so you grate the cheese downward or upward?
What about an onion?
The biggest problems I have with box graters is cutting my fingers especially when I get down to the end. Does anyone have any suggestions?
For more "grate" videos like this 😅anyone else heard that?
She’s holding the grater wrong. The black plastic guard is supposed to be completely against your cutting board and one hand firmly holding down grater and food item on your other hard.
Wouldn't grating laundry soap put chemicals into the food?
newsflash: you’re holding it the wrong way. should be held flat on its side with the side you want to grate on on the top
The only thing you missed… Before you use your grater, spray it with some cooking spray, and then none of the cheese or food will stick to the grater
This is a grate video.
How do I know if my grater is a "box grater"? It wasnt in a box, does that mean its a "normal grater".
it's called a "box grater" because of the boxy shape of the grater, there are also hexagonal graters
Technically it's a rectangular box grater..
Are you kidding me? People dont know you can grate carrots on these?
Does anyone ever show what they do with the pointless 4th side, that they call a grater, but it just looks like metal sticking out? All these years I thought it was for zesting, but have never used it in 50 years.
literally didn't subscribe cause you're asking me to subscribe every 2 minutes
