Prior to your claims, you must know one thing (without getting biased).
The British always felt that India (present India+Pakistan+Bangladesh with Burma included) was the cornerstone for their Imperial frame work in Asia. Viceroy (in fact viceroy means the one representing the Crown & none else has a viceroy except India) used to oversee the activities in Asia abutting the Indian Ocean - from Suez to Singapore). He has indirect presence in Aden (present-day Yemen), Colombo or Penang.
Inheritor, India chose not to continue this British tradition merely because it is "British". That is ridiculous. Had India took up at least the same responsibilities (that the British bore on their head), things would have been different.Of course it needs a big navy that needs to be financed & nascent Indian republic has none. Yet India chose to have an aircraft carrier (HMS Hermes. later INS Vikrant) when USSR & PRC didn't have any. Our Naval tradition derived from British practices, that we didn't imbibe. in mid 1980 s, British defence secretary Alec Douglas Home on a visit to India, coaxed the then defence establishment to play the leading role in Northern Indian Ocean. We refused it flatly (for no reason). What he sensed & we failed to feel is that Northern IO became a free for all & play ground for all kinds of navies (& Chinese began flexing muscles as they didn't see any who oppose them). We did It a fatal blunder.

In questions like this, "sense of proportion" is warranted in place of needless bravado. In IO America is presently the strongest. More than that, PRC is intent upon needling India(let me tell you they have a bigger navy ). There may be lurking in shadows some Islamic states or non-state actors, abetted by Pakistan or Turkey (Turkey has a better navy). Our diplomacy has nullified it all, with a dash of trade diplomacy. Our trade routes would be severely affected if we don't show caution (we witness it in Red Sea already with loss to many businesses in India). Yet, we don't want to be put in tricky, avoidable situations. I am thankfully to Muizzu for alerting India (Indians are apt to go to sleep leaving the essentials).
A navy that acts as a deterrent is far more useful than one that lacks teeth(we are yet to grow some teeth). Remember, ours isn't called a blue water navy, as yet. We need nuclear powered submarines & aircraft carriers - with long endurance (that even leading countries don't possess). In fact, our aircraft carriers lack the aircraft ! The bill (for them) is always in US$ Trillions (& we need to eat too, no?).
