    One of the clearest, widest-ranging voices of her generation. She can have power or an angelic softness. As far as being comfortable, believe it or not, Carly Simon was suffering from stage fright all her career.

    Art Garfunkel was talking to George Harrison in the background. I believe this is from the Concert for Bangladesh, which George helped organize.
    Carly Simon (pronounced Sy-mon) had several hits: You're So Vain, Anticipation, Nobody Does It Better.

    Carly Simon had so many great hits in the 70's such as "Haven't Got Time For The Pain", "Attitude Dancing", "Anticipation", "Coming Around Again", "You're So Vain", "Nobody Does It Better" (from the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me), "Jesse", "Legend In Your Own Time", "The Right Thing To Do", "(We Have) No Secrets" etc. She was married at one time to James Taylor & they did a few duets together "Mockingbird" & "Devoted To You".

    For us young women growing up in the 70's, (or I guess I should speak for myself), this was a song questioning what everyone was "supposed" to do, or supposed to want to do, get married and have kids. Maybe there could be another choice and not do what our mothers did. I always looked at this song as part of the beginning of the women's rights movement of the 60's & 70's. Love Carly!

    At the time of its release, we were a couple of years into the women’s liberation movement that kicked off in the late 60s. Women were starting to realize that their lives weren’t defined by marriage and motherhood. So, this song had a significant impact.

    This was a woman with crippling stage fright. She's described being terrified before performing, and yet she commands that stage when she gets "in the zone". You'll notice she spends a lot of time with her eyes closed.
    It's rather sad that even though she gave us so many great songs she couldn't enjoy it more.

    • @MoMoMyPup10
      @MoMoMyPup10 Год назад +1

      Having the piano face sideways is a bit of a bonus for sure, and I just made a similar comment about it as well. If you know beforehand about it you can tell she was feeling it at times, but if you don't she plays it very cool. It's a great performance, so it's easy to miss.

      I agree completely. Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” was a blockbuster. It’s in my Top 10 songs list by anyone at any time. The entire album (“Between The Lines”) is terrific! That’s one begging for someone to react to from the first song to the last. Several different music and vocal styles. It’s exhausting in a pleasant way. Beautiful songs, poignant lyrics, impeccable phrasing and a really good quality recording.

    Good eye Biz! Carly Simon grew up in a house filled with great literary's. Her father was Richard Simon of Simon and Schuster. I have always thought she was as beautiful as her voice. It's a shame that she and James Taylor couldn't make it but he was a heroin addict and they made babies which don't mix. I think he always loved her because when he found out she was battling cancer, he called her and said; "Those doctors better not harm an eyelash on your beautiful face." I'm so glad you liked it! Believe it or not, she had stage fright. You would never guess it.

    Yet the fact is, she suffered from near crippling stage fright most of her career. You can tell she was feeling it if you know that ahead of time, but she plays it very cool if you don't. Vocals, piano, looks, hits, and the bearer of James Taylor's children. Such a life.

    This is one of those songs that is so beautiful, yet heartbreaking. Her voice, the tempo, the music are pure perfection but the lyrics are devastating. I always wanted the girl in the story to realize she could break the cycle and be her own person and have a loving marriage at the same time because I was lucky enough to have parents that modeled that reality to me.
