I think he felt he wasn't wanting to tell the whole truth because at that time right there Luke was to young understand anything didn't know his father or the force just a farmer with his uncle in that time nice that he gave Luke his lightsaber wow that's pretty cool :)
Luke doesn't want to be involved in Ben's mission, but as he turns to leave, he stops & stares for a moment at the lightsaber in his hand. You can see him think, "Ben saved us from the Sandpeople, he told me the truth about dad being a top pilot & Jedi Knight, & even gave me his lightaber, but now he's leaving, & I'll probably never see him again. The very least I can do is give the old guy a lift, he doesn't even have a speeder.". If he hadn't, he'd have wound up like Owen & Beru.
I love the comments. 1- I just learned this scene was shot out of order and then recut. C3-PO turns off, then when the message comes on, he is awake and reacts to it. Luke goes from working on his arm to watching Leia. He has a tool in his hand. Then after the message 3PO is off again and Luke has the saber in his hand. 2-I never noticed that C-3PO’s head jumps when the Lightsaber is ignited. 3- The lightsaber ignites fully, as opposed to the slower slide out we see later. Maybe because it had been turned off for so long it had built up energy. Kind of like when you are trying to light a stove and it explodes as little. 4- The lightsaber is stored in a box. Just like when Rey finds it later. 5- Your father wanted you to have this. Well, actually he doesn’t know you exist, and I stole it from him as he was burning in lava after I cut his arm and legs off. 6- Ben’s place is kinda messy. Which made me feel good when I was a kid and my place was a wreck. 7- Luke reattached C-3PO’s arm very quickly. This kind of foreshadows Anakin’s ability to fix machines and how he built C-3PO.
Agree. They may have had the best intentions with this, but at the end of the day, it's still a form of manipulation. And yet: how the fuck would they tell Luke the whole truth right at the get go? In this state he might run into Vader's arms.
That is a disgustingly disingenuous Bad Faith interpretation. Luke outright refuses to become a Jedi here in this very scene and even knowing how important he is all Obi-Wan says is "you must do what you feel is right of course."
George Lucas has been making it up as he went since the beginning. There was enough backstory here to make a compelling trilogy without having to retcon everything by making Vader Luke’s father.

Even if Luke's Uncle Owen & Aunt Beru had heard the full recording in R2-D2 made by Princess Leia asking Obi-Wan Kenobi for help against the Galactic Empire, Owen wouldn't care that it's true and wouldn't want Leia to have that droid back and he would've yelled at Luke for having his father's lightsaber after Luke got told by Obi-Wan that Luke's father was a Jedi Knight like him.
I also think he already knew his twin sister Leia but had to be separated both him and her for a certain reason she's unknown to Luke for a reason and wasn't revealed until later in the movies on who she really was
Stop trying to make sense of the "Darth Vader killed your father" issue. It is what it is. It takes nothing away from the sheer joy of watching this movie.
Luke never asked if the Jedi were allowed to have kids. And would’ve realized his father broke the rules of the Order. And thus must have fallen to the dark side if he was killed by Vader
Probably not. Luke isn’t even looking at him and there’s nothing to directly suggest that he’s trying to use the Force on him like there is in other instances. It would also be pretty unethical for him to coerce him in such a way, and I don’t think Obi-Wan would do that to Luke.
@keepitsecret-dl1pr ok. That helps. 😉So, Bali and Obi fought together in the clone wars? I don't know all the background. But I do love all the Star Wars saga etc. 👍

From his perspective though, he told the truth, as he said in the third film and in a way, he did. When Anakin became a sith and used the name Darth Vader, he became a separate person, along with the new suit which made him basically into a cyborg. It's like Robocop, when Alex Murphy died, he became Robocop and everything he had in his life was stripped away. The only difference though was that he was killed by other people where Anakin basically killed himself by becoming Vader and joining the dark side. Plus Obi Wan was so distraught with what happen with Anakin that he separates him from Vader because he felt they were two different people. He didn't want to think that Vader who was a ruthless and cold hearted person was the good hearted and heroic Anakin that he had known since he was a boy.
Pretty sure that Darth Vader wasn’t originally going to be Luke’s father and that was a change made later on. So from a meta standpoint, Obi-Wan wasn’t a liar at all, but from a plot standpoint he definitely twisted the truth.
