- We escape Madrid to head for the magical medieval town of Siguenza - which is dominated by a massive 12th century castle! Yoly and I spent a "romantic" weekend exploring the town, eating and drink (how much pig's ear can one eat?) and checking out all the nooks and crannies of the massive medieval castle that looms over the town. Did we mention the castle is haunted? Venga, let’s go! 🥝

Quite pro trip: You can get to Siguenza by train from Madrid (about 90 minutes each way) Check Renfe.com
Also here is our guide Jorge's website. Keep in mind he only does tours in Spanish. www.visitasguiadassiguenza.es/
Yoly and I had been to Siguenza once before about a million years ago. I remember wandering the beautiful old streets, and eating a delicious lunch somewhere. But it was distant in our memory.
So we decided it was time to go back. This is a little known day trip out of Madrid. Only 90 minutes away by train. Or you can stay longer and stay in the INCREDIBLE Parador hotel on the hill.
So that's what we did.
What does one do in Siguenza? Eat, drink, wander, chill out. This Guadalajara, which is not an extremely populated part of Spain. It's an area that was a frontier land between the Christians and the Moors during the Reconquest. But the landscape has this wonderful rough beauty - hot hot hot in summer, cold in winter.
And the Parador is a gorgeous place to hole up for a weekend. Wandering the castle's halls, hanging in the bar, reading in the throne room.
Once you do start to explore more, check out Bar Ratón - clearly popular with the locals (they have more than pig's ear) and also Bar Tormes for the perdigacho.
And so the key things to do are:
- Explore the Parador (even if you're not staying there, you can wander the impressive common rooms)
- The Cathedral - massive and imposing (for such a small town)
- Wander the magical old streets
- Have a fino seguntino (the local drink - vermouth, beer and sweet soda) in the Plaza Mayor
- Have a drink in Cafe Paris
- Have a drink in Taberna el Arrabal - the oldest still running bar in the town
- Check out the modern restaurant (Nola), and also the two Michelin star restaurants in the area - El Doncel and Molino de Alcuneza Restaurante (both closed when we were there)
WHO ARE WE? 🥝

Hola, Spain lovers! We're James and Yoly. James is a New Zealander, and Yoly is from Spain. And we both live in Madrid. This channel is all about giving you a local insight into life in Spain, and helping you experience this country like a local when you come to visit (or live!). If that sounds like your kind of thing, bienvenido!

James. Realmente me emociona.
Tourists believe that tourism in Spain is sun and beach. But Spain has a very interesting rural and medieval tourism.
Love the austerity of high Castilla.
The Paradores are definitely the best hotel chains in Spain. With some of the best locations, restaurants, service, bars and everything
That are indeed amazing! Which is your favourite?
Hope you guys give it a try!
Unusable website though. Constant unexpected errors when accessing from Australia.
I think a visit to Ronda in Malaga is essential, and they have a formidable Parador. Love your videos to practice my english.
These guys are clearly in love and that makes their videos sparkle. Stay happy!
❤️❤️❤️
Seems quite cold there, it's good to show that Spain is not all sun and beaches but also a mountainous medieval cold country, it's great to show the little secrets of Spain, well done James and Yolly (did I spell Yolly
right? Sorry if I didn't)
Proud of my La Madre Patria (Morher Land). Great job!! Congrants!
Supreme effort!! You guys should do more of historical Spain ... its your forte ... I can see the passion and love with which you make these ones, more than the others. Please do more of old Spain ... I love it!! :)
Love you guys! A Native New Yorker who feels your passion for Spain!
My wife and I drove around Siguenza in 2018, coming from Cuenca through the Guadalajara Sierra. We were on our way to stay in El Burgo de Osma for a holiday in the region. This part of the country is not visited by many foreigners but is quintessentially Spanish or, more accurately, Castilian. In order to explore these places you really need a car but they are absolutely worth it. Tons of history and beautiful landscapes. Every small town has a spectacular castle, monastery or church. The Paradores are good but expensive. I tend to visit them just to have a drink and look around before spending the night in something a lot cheaper. Worth doing for a romantic weekend though. Cheers James and Yoli
So true - these parts of Spain are VERY Castilian!
Yolly lights up these videos with her brillliant cheer. More Yolly!!!!
Terrific! Another great mix of food, culture and history.
Absolutely stunning place and great insight. Avila next please!
Sueño a volver pronto!
No obstante, Spanish people like me ( ( I’m from BCN ) also have soooo much to learning about Spain inland ( ( speciallly countries as Leon, North Castile, Cantabria, Galicia or Asturias ). Sois muy simpáticos . Saludos, afectuosamente! ❤️
Muchísimas gracias!!
I love those mountain towns around Madrid, we'll often visit them if we have a couple of free days, fell in love with sergovia the other year, wonderful place
"Sergovia"?
James your Trips are getting more and more professional and so informative.... Talking to the locals' Eating great food' Going to The Local Bars the heart and soul of any small town .... Well done James ......Looking forward to next one.
Gracias John!
Great video on this medieval castle & town. I must visit once I am in Spain.
Beautiful views, and it's like stepping back in time. Another little bit about Castile, is the Castile soap this area is known for throughout the world. So nice to see you and Yoli, visiting such a lovely part of Spain. Thank you!
LOL, reminds me of when my wife and I bought some olive oil soap in Andalusia. When customs were checking the huge white blocks in our travel bag they thought they had the bust of the century.
One of your best. Thanks guys. This is Spain for me. The costas are fine but the country has so much to offer. Never been to Siguenza but I have travelled in Spain a lot and I have never, never had a bad experience with local people, except maybe trying to get my car repaired quickly 😊
Thank you Paul!!
I love the paradores, and stayed in several (Sigüenza being one of my favourites). I would also definitely recommend Cardona and Alarcón.
Hispania. First province of Rome.
AWEsome AWEsome AWEsome!! I'll be in Madrid ( & Barcelona) at the end of this month. We have been watching your videos and taking notes. For my next trip to Spain I will go to Siguenza and would LOVE to stay in the Castle. Salutations from USA. ps you mention Yolis mother is from Guadalajara region. Part if family's history is the Guadalajara Mexico., that has it's roots from Guadalajara , Spain. 👏👏👍👍👍

I'm glad how you enjoy our land, Spain has many places that will surprise you.
Thanks James and Yoly! Was in Siguenza about four years ago and loved it. Thanks as always for your great videos...it keeps me in touch with Spain when I'm here in Ireland 😊🍀🇪🇸
Viva my beautiful country🎉❣We have it all... Spain is a mini continent, stunning scenery, full of culture, delicious food and wonderful friendly and kind people❤❤❤🇪🇦🌹
Goodness gracious James y Yoli, that's was brilliant!! At the beginning of the vid, I felt that I was watching a short film. Great work.
Sorry we haven't left a comment in a while but we still watch and "like" every video posted.
Hope to see more Paradores. Last year we stayed at the one in Lerma. We plan to see more. Siguenza has just risen to the top of the list.
This came just at the perfect time when I was looking for sg like that near Madrid! Thanks a lot and hope to see more soon!!! Cheers
Besos pareja.
Wonderful journey to the 12th century! Thank you Yoli and James 🥰
Loved this video James, keep up the good work you are doing great!
I can't stop watching all your videos. I've been to barcelona 2 times and now i want to go visit other parts of spain. Hopefully after the pandemic. I love Yolie she reminds me of my cousins from Mexico.
Can´t wait to see more of this series!! Take a tour around Zaragoza!
Nunca visitan a nuestro viejo e histórico reino...🤷♀️🤞🤞
Man, your videos about Spain are just top!. Seen so many but nothing's big even comes close to yours. Thank you!
Thank you!
Looked like a really elegant and unique kind of accommodation. Thanks for showing it. Your video footage was very well done. Very picturesque shots of everything.
Beautiful, just beautiful place, and the history. Would like to visit some day. Thanks James and Yoli.
Yet another reason to return to Spain. Gracias James. ¡Amo su trabajo!
¡Que bien hecho! You guys are taking the video production to the next level. Love it!

Awesome - have a great trip! Let them know we sent you 😁
This might be your best vid yet! Thanks!
And you're making me homesick. Only a couple more months and I'll be back in my beloved Barcelona. For now, I'm living through you. Keep up the great work, love you guys!
James and Yoly great video!! Planning taking my family to Spain early next year. That's how I came across your channel. Been watching most of your food videos. I was happy to see this castle video. Thanks!!
Awesome - glad you liked it!
I feel so sorry for the folks in the twelfth century. It must have been hard having to watch TV by candle light! Nice to see you getting out and about!
Beautiful! Reminds me of our day trip to Ávila last summer, right down to the little mishaps with wine! Our waitress knocked down a glass right on me. Please keep traveling and posting!!!
Wow! So Beautiful!.
Nice video as always. Thank you! Parador Hotels have been on my wish list for many years. Maybe I can afford it one of these days :)
Finger crossed - they are pretty amazing!
Much love from Sagunto! I love following your adventures. Thank you both for all you do. Un abrazo!!
Gracias!!!
It’s lovely to see how much you love our country 😊❤️ I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone talking with that passion about us... thank you for this amazing videos
i love how much you love spain. you make me want to book a trip! thanks for these awesome videos!
I really like the tasteful way, you too
showcase Spain in your fun videos.
I truly love your guys channel, your sense of humor is great. Keep those videos coming. A friend of mind is visiting Madrid soon and I recommended your channel...
Always love your videos, but particularly enjoyed this one with the parador. I studied Spanish in Salamanca back in 1994 and whilst having returned to Spain on many occassions since then, it has always been to Andalucia or Barcelona. Returning to Madrid for Easter in April and can not wait! Keep up the good work.
Another excellent video!
Thank you!
James & Yoly - This video may be your BEST ever! Hopefully, you'll be making many exploration videos. Saludos!
Excellent video- I love it. Keep them coming :-)
Great video! Loved the editing😊 saludos desde Jerusalén 🤗

CIAO & PRAYERS FROM TANGO SEA:
YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME...LOVE THIS VIDEO. YOU GUYS SHOULD MAKE MORE VIDEOS OF CASTLE HOTEL...LOOKING FORWARD FOR MORE CASTLE HOTEL VIDEOS...THIS VIDEO CAME OUT OUTSTANDING VIEWS ...BRAVO !!! BLESSING DAY !!!
Been waiting for this one so excited!!
Love Sigüenza. I spent a weekend also there sleeping in the Parador. Highly recommended.
That's exactly how I feel about Spain. Just like you describe it.
Awesome video, you just brightened up my miserable Monday. That castle and the whole area looks amazing, I definitely have to leave the comfort of Madid and explore further away the next time I go.
Let us know how you get on!!
I love the style of your channel. I'm so glad I found you guys (just yesterday!). Although it will take 2-3 years, my partner and I and all of our kids are saving up and looking to move to Spain. Your channel has been a Godsend in this dream.
Wonderful video James!!! Congrats
Amazing video! Thank you.
Probably your best video so far !
Thank you!
Great one James and Yoli! Great meat (sorry vegans) & haunted castle 😂 Cool Iberian brothers. Really beautiful and romantic, full of History. 💗 from interior Portugal
Portugal also has beautiful castles, i remember the impressive Tomar fortified monastry
@@sagemenn I am writing very close to tomar templar castle, the almourol island castle and abrantes castle :))
@@sagemenn but the landscape is quite unique in that part of spain
Ole!!!
Amazing video, well done!
What an amazing place. Loved the video and the history.
Thanks ma!! Xx
I love love this video it will be great to do more of paradores
I love your channel, please keep going the good work.
One of my fav vid of you guys!!! Just awesome energies at this place. I know its little unusual but love it 😍❤️
I really enjoyed this video. Very interesting!
Got back last week from staying in this castle...lovely and enchanting just as you said. We wouldn't have considered this place if not for you and Yoly's recommendation! We even made our own version of the scary hallway video, too!
Hola James,Yoly!
Me and my wife finally made it to the castle. We spent 2 wonderful nights, yes my wife claims Doña Blanca’s spirit does come out at night.
Thank you for this video, we saw it then we added it to our travel list.
Hi James and Yoli. I am a big fan of your blogs/vids and especially loved this one. I felt really immersed in your trip. I also liked the Paris Food Tour (love France) but focus on Spain more. Your delivery of the topics really suits my needs and how I like to receive info. Despite being a non-Spaniard your Spanish is exceptional (well done Yoli). Please keep the vids coming and expand into France. Venga!!!!
So close to Medinacelli, but yet so far!!!! I absolutely love your vlogs. I discovered your videos yesterday and have seen several in the past 24 hours. My husband & I lived in Spain for the school year back in "75" as my husband was completing his Architectural degree (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California). Best year of our lives!! Thank you SO much!! Also hope I come across Colonia Guell, Almunecar & Ronda in your vlogs! Thank YOU!
Hey.. I was waiting for history... Thanks you tou you both for that... Please keep going...
Was a vegetarian for five years before grad school in Spain. Early on, if I ordered vegetarian I'd usually get served eggs or fish. ;-) Visiting the high plains towns of Castile-La Mancha is a fool's errand without being open to generous meat choices. (I made peace with the delicious game birds.)
Cool video, thank you James + Yoly ;)
I'm surprised that you don't have 100K Subscribers yet!! Your videos are amazing!! You definitely deserve more Subscribers!! Love from America!
thank you!
Love your videos.¡More, por favor!
We watched all your videos before our trip to Spain on 12 25 2019
Did the Devour Sevilla Tapas tour. I'm planning my next trip to Spain already. Thanks
Saludos.
Bienvenido!!!
Hola Jaime y Yoli, just finished watching your new video. Enjoyed every minute. We're looking forward to our 7 month stay, starting in April, in Andalusia with our first time No Lucrativa Visa. You have inspired us with your series of videos in Spain to spend a lot of time in your beautiful country. We will be looking for a place to settle that will accommodate our adventures throughout the country. Semana Santa we travel to Sevilla for the festival. Hoping to see you there? Thanks again and Great Job.
PS: Any suggestions on other festivals in Andalucia would be very helpful.
I also have been in Sigüenza Parador, is really amazing. I also recommends you another two Parador Castles in Spain where I have been, Olite in Navarra and Baiona in Pontevedra (Galicia). There are many more, but I remember those two.
Great video guys, I love castles, thank you for talking so good of my country and is good showing foreign people no all Spain is like Benidorm or Magaluf lol, welcome to Spain
Thanks Leticia!
