I love to see people like this. I might not want to live on the road in a small space. But im pretty jealous of the fact people can find each other like this and do something like this together
One day I plan on doing this. Once all the kids are grown.
Van Builds, skoolies, tiny house and small house designs are great examples of what you can do with space. Even if you don't want to live tiny like that you could still use your existing home or rental and increase the usefulness and function of the space or learn from these designs and buy a smaller home for cheaper and not lose functionality!

Living in a van (like a itty bitty one) is my dream, when I’m 17 I plan on buying my own van, convert it for a while (mostly taking about 1-2 years) and well ya know live in it

This whole video is just "James is very proud of this" and what seems to be Hazel loving him for it.

It's wonderful.
I would cover the door in the cab with a black or grey cloth pinned at the top to hide the lock on the door and the door itself as a crook will see that lock and determine that something valuable will be behind it, if they cant get through the lock or feel they want more time, they might just steal your van/home.
Since they weren't yet finished with the overall conversion, and there was the framework showing in the cab, I'm guessing that they either did, or will do, what you've suggested when they reach that point. You're right, though; a dishonest person would try to steal what they perceive to be of high value, which it is, considering it's James and Hazal's home.
I love this van build. It really does look like an apartment. It would have been nice to see how well she fits up in that bed. It looks sort of claustrophobic, like you wouldn't even be able to sit on the bed area, but it's hard to say just looking at it. And the bathroom was set up nicely. I hate it when the toilet is actually in the shower with you under your feet, but they used the space really smart. I thought it was cute how she went from object to object showing off what her husband is proud of, lol.
HotCrazyCatLady Me I agree I think the natural thing to do would be to make the sofa in the main area something that is convertible to a bed as well. It would be very practical. Also, id possible have a small countertop that is able to be removed from the wall in the area where the have the vans backdoor. That way, if they are stealth camping and thus the backdoor is closed, the back door area can serve as a small desktop/study area in addition to the table top where the sofa is so for instance one person could be at the couch but another person could work separately on their laptop or whatever at the desk in the corner - or have a flip up countertop at the end of their current countertop which can act as a temporary additional desk area
Nicely done. But the bedroom no for me .It looks sort of Claustrophobic, It feels like being crowded.

Personally for me it doesn't seem claustrophobic due to the skylight. Maybe open it halfway before sleep
They may work different shifts, so having separate areas may be important to them. Would be a challenge climbing over sleeper to go potty in the night, etc. But it is doable. Easier to design for one. Wishing them much happiness.

No water, power loud or not. This is beautiful. I love your lay out storage all of it. Even a shower. You two are funny at the end because of your loud home. Loud or not you own a beautiful home.
Love how you did the different levels and how you work storage in - it doesn’t look like a van !
Also like how you did the toilet and shower to avoid the wet room !
It's a shame those stairs didn't work, that looks like a really good idea -
seeing how the grains of the wood align on the steps and how they were glued together, it was never going to work.

Your "crazy ladder" design would likely work just fine with a solid board (2x10, or 2x12). You tried using the butcher block material, and those are just lots of narrow boards glued together. Boards held with glue will not hold weight free-floating like that. A solid board, however, will.
Patrick Crow I was thinking the same thing. Pretty ingenious design... just not the best choice of materials. Also, sometimes the smartest people seem to miss the most common sense and obvious things (doing the plumbing, etc first). 😳
I agree. Very clever design. I wouldn't give up on it. I'd try 2x solid lumber.
Dude Hazel is adorable and James is a badass. I love these people they're so cool and down-to-earth.
I think you've built a wonderful conversion, and James and you should be very proud. As for the things that aren't working yet, you'll get there in the fullness of time. It's very liveable and attractive. I like that you haven't gussied up the outside too. Best not to make it look too good on the outside. Well done! and happy travels.

Yeah. Just like a normal home, there are things that need improving. I like that she mentions them.
He was honest about this error.....woodworking is not as daunting as electrical work, plumbing and propane even if you’re a noob....
That truck looks like a real play with separation make it's look like a true studio or apartment different version of a exclusive excellent vision I like u said unlimited thinking no fear just do it learn it ask questions

Best thing you can do in a tiny space is play with verticality and they definitely did that to suit their needs. Very creative use of space! The fact that they tested it out before building it was a smart idea! I use my bedroom and basement to test out tiny house and multifunctional furniture designs.
James is a genius! I love all that extra effort or ideas he is putting into the build. Your house feels good.
Congratulations. Oh I also love that rear deck and the cover for the garage, it looks like a wine tasting place to relax.
This is probably the best layout I've seen. The sofas look really comfy.
You could put curtains across the bedroom. Draw them closed if someone wants to sleep and the other wants to use the lights in the other areas. Your truck is fantastic! James should be proud of his innovations. He’s brilliant!
My biggest tip is to always, even if you're not actually going to install it right away, rough-in your piping immediately after framing and before any of the other steps. Both your plumbing and electrical, it will make it so much easier and then you don't deal with this exact problem of not wanting to ruin your build after the fact. It's a very beautiful "van" though.
This van is fantastic!! The love and dedication that has gone into this conversion has been well worth it. Everything is now finished and working just as it should. The happy couple are on the road and exploring our beautiful country. I’ve very proud of them and wish them all the best on their travels x

This is gorgeous. I almost wish I didn’t need a much larger home, because this looks perfect for someone without kids. Absolutely beautiful, and so functional.
Love the floor plan. The design is esthetically pleasing and very functional. Very nice. Will be awesome once everything is working.
The stairs would have been pretty cool! We were thinking about a van build but after weighing our options, we renovated a 21 year old class a motorhome; We saved up some money, quit our jobs and now we travel and resell full time for a living. Changed our lives!

I understand. My husband and I bought 12 acres and put a cabin on it. A shed cabin. We have had everything you can think of happen to stop us from getting our place fixed up the way we dreamed of. So we did sell the big house in the suburbs and bought a little country home in a small town. Just today we traveled to our land and it seems overwhelming. A couple months ago there was a tornado that come through and knocked down several huge trees on our land. Just hoping my husband can cut them up. But something keeps us moving forward. I guess it’s that dream. Your home is beautiful! You have done a really nice job. What we do to shower in our dry cabin is we use a five gallon sprayer. The kind people use for outdoor chemical sprayers. We just got a new one and it works great. We find that the five gallon is plenty for both of us to shower. We fill it and let it set in the sun. Or we fill it and heat up a kettle of water to pure into the container. It’s an option. You could even use the sprayer to wash your hair at the kitchen sink. I hope you are able to get everything just like you want your home. Enjoy it ! Leslye

By far the best van I’ve seen yet. You don’t have one do those annoying couch that converts into a bed thing. You have a full shower and bathroom. Your design is completely original. Not only does it look amazing it has all the functions too I mean yeah you still have to put in like the water and stuff. Still I really like the layout especially how everything can be accessed from the interior and honestly it’s a pretty stealthy design too. The front cab door is awesome and so is the whole back wall with the flowers and it’s own separate door. The deck space is nice and for once someone with more than 300 wats of solar. Your really gonna have something great once it’s all done

I've also been undergoing a Van Conversion and agree 100% that your priorities should always be to get in your water, hard-wiring, a/c, lighting etc first prior to getting in cupboards and extra details. My Van is a Transit also but similar to the size of the Van next to theirs. Alot of planning needs to go into a job like like, especially if you've never done it before. It's been a great experience and learning curb and despite still having more to do, I am still enjoying my getaways!
This is one of the best set ups I've seen in a Luton van, so lovely. So many people seem to waste so much space and it doesn't feel homely.

The windows and the skylight really make that space seem light/bright and "homelike" with the natural light.
Her accent is very rare like a mix of Australian, Scotish, Irish and English

Very small space, yet so well thought out, it functions vastly better than my 208 s.f. studio apartment....and it has a stove and oven, something my apartment lacks.

I think this is my favourite van layout that I've ever seen! I love how the floor breaks up the space, and also moves the storage underneath and leaves the area open. I'd probably prefer the ladder as built in, just against the shower wall, but other than that, it's perfect! And the shower with the sliding door is super cute
I like this a lot. I'd like to make one out of a box truck, only a little longer, where there could be two separate work/sleep spaces. I like how the living room/dining room/desk/storage area are such a good use of space without feeling cramped. Great job!
