The thing that jumps out to me right away is the incredible rich harmonics in the overdrive. Harmonics that only a tube amp can create. In the high mids, there is an incredible saturation thats just beautiful!
Sounds great guys... just listen to those upper harmonics 😍 The sound is one thing but the feel is another aspect that makes this circuit so enjoyable to play. The sag from the old transformers.. the quick/lively response, the touch sensitivity and dynamic range... I thought it sounded great with every guitar in this video, too.
This is the tone I expect to hear from a Dumble amp. The bluesy, singing chirpy tone Larry and especially Robben got from their Dumbles. Thanks for this demo. Btw, pretty sure Larry used a Boogie on the studio recording of Room 335.
When I spoken to him, he thought he'd moved past Boogie's by then. Definitely by the "On Solid Ground" record. Nevertheless, a lot of the live performances of Room 335 were all Dumble.
Mason, amazing sounding amp and review. I think the money aspect of these rare amps is what brings out haters. I would not buy a Jackson Pollack print to hang on my wall, but I can understand why collectors pay millions to own an original. Like Dumble these are unique and important pieces.
I think so too...I think it'd be the same conversation if there were only 200 Marshall amps ever made. A Marshall Plexi is an equally great sound to a great Dumble amp, as it a nice AC30, or a Twin Reverb clean. Any of these amps, reduced to limited numbers, we would be having the same conversation about. The price definitely makes it easier to disregard. I agree, it's too much money for the amp, but Dumble didn't make these prices. Not that it was cheap to get it through him, but I think at his max he was around $50K for an amp, and not the $200-300K they ended up fetching on the used market. Again, $50K isn't cheap, but if he's only making a few amps a year, when you consider his time and parts cost, he wasn't getting rich off these amps, it was the collectors that were.

Honestly Mason, I second the comment. I could see future owners of Dumbles being negatively affected by subpar playing on the amps. Would much prefer your playing in any event as you've got great feel. Not hating on Gabe (I think you need to own your successes and shortcomings in equal measure), just giving honest feedback after watching many of your vids, which I love.

It's the BEST one I've come into contact with as far as ODS amps go. They seem to be getting upwards of $250K these days (or more). That's Igloo Studios in Burbank.
How do you know? Have you played this Dumble and compared it to the Mystic Blues in the room? It's no knock on those amps, but you've got no reference point for how these amps would stack up in the same room with the same mics.
Yes, the owners of the Dumble estate are said to be making the amplifiers again. I believe their hand was forced because they have to, in good faith, be producing amplifiers to sell in order to protect their trademark. There were companies in Europe attempting to remake Dumble amplifiers with their name and likeness that I believe Dumble's estate managers were in litigation with and came to the conclusion that they needed to be actively making amps with the Dumble name in order to preserve his legacy. I'm sure will be many hard decisions they'll have to make moving forward to keep the brand and name alive that might have been at odds with how Dumble might have done things in the past but may be necessary in the survival of the Dumble name.

I own and love the SSS so much, I also bought the Nux knockoff. Similar, but different. I stack them, using the SSS as the always on tone and the Nux to create an extra boost/od.
@@haloworld121212 you can tell the difference in the pots and switch. The SSS has a wider usable range. The better quality pots, may have something to do with that.

Is that more indicative of inexperience with Dumble amplifiers or overestimating what's possible from a solid state distortion pedal? Remember there are some folks that thing Sizzler is just as good as Ruth's Chris. Could just be a case of "Tone Beer Goggles."
No overdrive pedal can create that type of richness or complexity in the harmonics. The only thing I've tried that comes even remotely close is the Kingsley valve pedals. Listen to the high notes specifically. You can just hear the harmonics swimming around. Sounds great. Also don't forget that the amp is being mic'd up and recorded direct in and would definitely sound much bigger/more 3D in the room. These amps are also about the feel. There is nothing quite like playing a good one yourself. The attack/response you feel from the amp is very lively and fast. They're just so alive.
Based off this serial number just an Overdrive Special? I doubt they had this one, and each ODS sounds different as they're basically custom suits made for the player.

I don't think anything here contests that both of those amps (Super and Bassman) have great sounds, however, they're not compared here so there's no frame of reference for how these might sound recorded in a room relative to the Dumble in video. I'm not sure how forums come into play here as most of those members have never played (or seen) a Dumble. We're using our ears and talking about what we hear and the adjectives used are aligned with that.
Depends on the Larry Carlton era..."On Solid Ground" has some gain to it so does "Larry and Lee". I think he was also using a Valley Arts more on some of those as well so it doesn't have quite as much saturation as the ES-335 due to the single coils (albeit they were often active EMGs on the VA guitars).
No disrespect intended here, but I wish more than anything we could hear this played by someone else, playing literally anything else other than the typical Robben Ford/Larry Carlton/John Mayer riffs. These amps sound amazing, and it’d be great to hear them in a different context. No offense, Gabe. It’s nothing personal :/
Jose, for the purposes of keeping the player and sounds consistent across most of these Dumble videos we opted to keep the song choices similar for reference so you could compare various serial numbers and have a relative baseline. Furthermore, these are the types of sounds these amps tend to excel at, where playing metal or CCM might not have a desirable result. I'll keep this in mind for our next one where maybe we do some separate sound examples that might not be as typical.
Captures are so bad. I can't believe we are in capture land in 2024. If an amp is set up just rite for a certain guitar and player, your squire with 80% weaker output pickups is going to make that capture useless to you.
Closed minded and ignorant opinions. Tone models and captures vastly increase the ease of playing with many different types of amps/tones. Plus, not everyone can afford or even have space to own amplifiers.
This year the dumbbell has become last year’s Klon, only harder to find if not impossible, guitar players are just kind of ridiculous, I only listen to the first bit of rhythm playing you were doing didn’t sound special at all to me, none of my favorite guitar players have ever used a dumbel, spellcheck wanted to call it a dumbbell, I guess that’s what you are, if you buy one
As far as rare gear, Dumble has the Klon beat for decades and even more so now that Dumble is no longer living. It's a great sounding amp, but not for everyone, just as other classic amps: Fender, Marshall, Vox, also aren't for everyone. You may not be willing to spend the money (nor am I) to get a Dumble, but nobody loses money on them if/when they decide to buy them. They're only increasing in value and anyone I know that's bought one and sold it (typically to get another Dumble) has at least made their money back plus 30% appreciation on top of it (if not more) even it they're only owned it for 1-2 years. One of my biggest gear regrets was not buying an ODS when I had a chance to get one for $42,000. I saw the same amp recently sold for $250K a few years ago. That would have been a sound investment. Now you can't touch an Overdrive Special for anywhere close to that.

I didn't see inside, but I don't think it did as there are no controls from the send or return level on the back and just adding a cable to the send/return of the loop degraded the tone significantly which made me thing it's likely passive.
Great amp but man i think trainwreck Liverpool tweed bassman and old Marshall jtm/plexi sound way better IMHO i don't get the fascination of a tweeked bandmaster bassman circuit being worth 150k 😂thats just stupidity the vibrolux sounds just as good if not better in ways
I love the Trainwrecks too, they didn't seem to maintain their mystique the same was as the Dumbles, but equally great sounds (just totally different). I think it's reductive however to say that it's just a tweaked "Bandmaster" or whatever (all Fender front ends on the mid 60's amps are the same BTW). The same could be said (if we're being reductive) about Trainwrecks. It's just a Plexi or VOX, etc. If you know the reference amps well and then play a Dumble or a Trainwreck, you quickly understand they're their own thing.

I didn't see inside, but I don't think it did as there are no controls from the send or return level on the back and just adding a cable to the send/return of the loop degraded the tone significantly which made me thing it's likely passive.

Great amp but man i think trainwreck Liverpool tweed bassman and old Marshall jtm/plexi sound way better IMHO i don't get the fascination of a tweeked bandmaster bassman circuit being worth 150k 😂thats just stupidity the vibrolux sounds just as good if not better in ways
I love the Trainwrecks too, they didn't seem to maintain their mystique the same was as the Dumbles, but equally great sounds (just totally different). I think it's reductive however to say that it's just a tweaked "Bandmaster" or whatever (all Fender front ends on the mid 60's amps are the same BTW). The same could be said (if we're being reductive) about Trainwrecks. It's just a Plexi or VOX, etc. If you know the reference amps well and then play a Dumble or a Trainwreck, you quickly understand they're their own thing.
