This game is magic. When you start to play, you think "oh it's simple", but one hour later you can't stop playing it. One of the biggest gems of the snes and top 50 of the snes library without any doubt.
I love this game, wanted to get it in 93 as an 8 year old but it was $94 at toys r us, so I rented it for like 2 weeks lol, and beat it. As a kid I really liked anything biology so this game was such a fullfilling fantasy and the names of the animals and of your upgrades are all real prehistoric animals, the grinding could be annoying but in like you said, its "the carrot dangling in front of you" lol that keeps you going, finding out how to be a caveman was really rewarding, and the ost is awesome
I remember in high school,I had ZNES emulator and this game ROM on my Ipod,I went around to all the computers in my electronics class and installed it,seeing people who never played it, realize how amazing this game was..Was great
When I was little, playing this game is where I realized I want to make games. It was novel and interesting, one of the original most inspiring games for me. It may not be my #1 favorite overall (that'd be CT), but I still love the idea of it. It's also on the very short list of games I actually found myself finishing (I seem to get bored of things quickly). I kind of wish the rest of the world cared a bit more for it.
Yeah, something about this game always made we want to pick up game development. Probably because it is a fairly simply engine but allows for a lot of imagination in the design choices.
This game has been a favorite of mine for years! It's in my top 3 favorite RPG's (Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and EVO!), I know it might not seem to be anywhere as popular as the other two, but for me it 100% belongs there. It's one of those games that just seems to get lost in the seemingly endless ocean of amazing RPG's on the SNES, even though it's so unique and different than nearly all of those other RPG's. It may not be the have the most innovative game play or have the best graphics, or even the most in-depth story (though I gotta admit, the little amount of story here is amazing!)...But it's still manages to be a truly unforgettable experience that IMO makes it a must play game for the SNES. I gotta give the developers major props for being brave enough to even attempt to bring such a concept for a game a reality, but were able to pull off so well. I wish there were more games like this back then! But even more I wish there was a proper sequel to this game! Alas, I don't think that will ever happen and honestly, that it might be for the best as I wouldn't want anything to tarnish this amazing games legacy!
If you played it as a kid when you had nothing to do all week(end) but play this game, then I fully believe you. I played lots of games for hours on end, never getting bored of them when I was a kid, but that now I get bored or annoyed after less than an hour. This game is way ahead of it's time and I love the concepts in it, but most games like that don't hold up amazingly well.
That first shark before discovering the spiral horn, the second bee before figuring out the strategy, the yeti mom, and the last boss were all difficult as a kid.
Hey, discovered this channel a few days ago and I've been catching up. You do great reviews, you have a unique take on the games and make an effort to not spout the same script that everyone else does for a particular game. Also, your voice is pleasant and you sound intelligent and reasonable. This is a great channel.
+Patali C I share the same opinion too. This game is really something cool. I like it even better than Spore, though i didn't play the subsequent games of that saga. Enix was really hard-working quality producers back in the SNES era.
My parents had this game for the SNES for years and I remember being the first person in my family to figure out how to get out of the ocean. Soundtrack slaps too
I feel like a remake of this game with more modern and varied gameplay could be an absolute home run if done right. 2D or 3D. 3D would be pretty hard to do well though.
Just started playing this today. I am really enjoying it! I also played Black Desert Online for 3 years so I'm basically immune to grind at this point. Thanks for the recommendation!
The soundtrack to this game is by Koichi Sugiyama, who does the music for the Dragon Quest series. So, yeah, I'm not surprised people ask about the music of this game!
Half-true. The music for the original PC-98 version (which is a VASTLY different game) was indeed composed by Koichi Sugiyama. However, it was re-arranged for the Super Famicom/SNES by Motoaki Takenouchi. The PC-98 tracks have a very different sound and feel to them.
Incredible game, great music, great art, great concept. If they made a sequel to this on Steam I would buy it immediately. Wish I had held onto the old SNES cartridge I use rent from the local grocery store video store before they shut them all down when I was a kid.
Yeah, I emulated this game before. I do like the game a lot, but the latter bit of the game becomes tedious. That might sound strange, but the start of the game has its appeal in the surroundings and the fast (and many) evolutions, but at some point you can only change very little and from that point youre stuck with it. Silly enough, I see the same problem in the game spore. The start is fun, tho could be better (like this game as well) and at some point you have the feeling that the developers are just dragging out the ending.
I didn't mind the grinding but that's just me being used to it. I understand how other people would get turned off quickly. If you look past that, it's a nice experience and some of the "hidden" transformations are fun to use, even if they last for only a small area or a boss fight.
Yeah... It's also a bit more accurate than Spore was -- amazingly fun as it was lol In Spore, creatures all evolve from all different species. Which I guess could be possible on alien planets, now that I think about it xD But that's just not the way things worked out on Earth. But anyway, EVO was both educational -- having placed the different periods in an historically accurate chronology -- and extremely fun. God, I miss playing my SNES... God, I miss the 90s...
Nil Markas how is it educational in anyway alien dino bois trying to control all of the world thats dumb w..i mean they never existed at all totally yes human believe in a alie...human human that they never conquered earth millions for years ago and now eat people that never happend
I remember randomly coming across the rom for this game back in 2003. I'd never heard of the game, but figured I'd give it try. It was one of the grindiest, slowest, most ambiguous games I'd played up until that point, but it has a bizarre charm to it that's hard to explain.
Yeah, I checked out this game for a while on emulator. I dropped it after a couple of runs, not because it was too repetitive, hard or anything. I have just had other games to give a try. It's exactly as snesdrunk say: lurk and eat while being sure to survive until next evolution. These aspects make the game quite long. Someone with short attention span, in mood for fast paced action ought to definitely overlook it! It's something for a collected mind to delve into, one peaceful night or rainy afternoon. I got to say, EVO is very relaxing thanks to its superb score and unique concept. Take your time to connect with your inner self and enjoy that metaphysical odyssey, I'd say it's EVO's very philosophy.
Feeling some nostalgia for my first ever SNES rom. I would love to be able to play it "on the go" with my 3DS.The "grinding", the music, the uniqueness of this title dragged me very effectively into it.
I finished this game back in the day and i must say that is one of the most unique games on the platform. Yes, its a bit grindy and tedious, but its really fun.
Excellent analysis as usual, this is one of many SNES games I missed out on in back in the day and now refuse to pay $250 for. You should do a Titus games video and analyze if they're really as bad as their reputation implies, and which ones are actually worth playing.
The last boss is a pushover if you abuse the Neck Evolution exploit. Basically, build up a HUGE stack of EVO Points before going into his battle. Do NOT evolve into the Human. When you get low on HP, lengthen/shorten your neck and your HP will be healed. Just keep doing this as you progress through the battle, lengthening and shortening your neck (this doesn't affect your stats, it only changes your attack animation/reach slightly) to heal as needed, since your HP is restored anytime you evolve.
You have to admit, real evolution is a lot like grinding. I really have a lot of respect and love for this game and have been playing now for more than 5 years constantly in the background of other games, that's the beauty of this game, you don't need to play it every day to remember what it is that you are doing, yes lots of love.
Finally! Lmao I asked for this game to be reviewed as soon as I discovered your channel. Just last night I was looking to sell my version of this game, however the game store was only going to give me 30 bucks for it. Maybe I will try my luck on eBay. Though I don't think I would ask for 250 dollars.
Yeah you are right on your review - although i have to admit, that i like grinding. So it's more than understandable, that i consider this to be one of my most played snes games to date. There is not a single year, where i don't at least play some hours of E.V.O. just plain awesome game ;)
I feel like the OP didnt grow up with this game. I LOVED the grind.. but... if thats your complaint, why grind? The game doesnt require you to, I just wanted to unlock EVERY SINGLE evolution. Even though 50% or more were useless.
I beat this way back and really enjoyed it, albeit like you said the grinding wore on me (that is good or bad since now I know where all the best grind spots are). It really was the desire to see what the heck your monstrosity would look like next that drove me forward. I actually went back and attempted another play through again about a year ago and literally got stuck and cannot proceed. What happened was that I evolved into a human and have to fight the Yeti/Lady Yeti boss, and the Lady Yeti is damn near impossible as a man. The problem: No fucking post hit invincibility whatsoever in this game. Seriously, this is probably the only side scrolling action game I can think of where you do not get even a second's worth of invincibility or a moment to react between being hit. In that particular battle she just combos me four times with her clap attack and I am fucking dead, and she moves so fast that I can hardly even hit her. It's fucking ridiculous and that is a definite pitfall for the mechanics. Also the composer for the game was Koichi Sugiyama who did music for Dragon Quest. The opening track sounds like a slight variation of the main theme from DQ 1.
There is one exploit that might help you. Every time you evolve, you are restored to max hp. In human form it is harder, since you can only evolve between large x small sizes
Ah...nostalgia. Ever since I sold all my SNES stuff in 98 to pay for college, I've missed this game. But an emulator is the best way to play it due to the save states. Constantly reverting was cost heavy for such a grindy game. One mistake could force you into another 5-10 minutes of grinding for more evo points.
There was a similar game for Dreamcast called Seventh Core Evolution, or something like that. The evolution aspects were a lot more complicated, which might be good or bad depending on how you feel about it. Also, it was pretty weird.
This is an alright game, but I'm glad you're a sane person who agrees this is not 200 bucks worth of game. It makes me cringe when I see a reviewer say "OH MAN, TOTALLY WORTH IT AT ANY PRICE!". Really? Cause no, nostalgia is one thing, but nobody had EVO growing up (shut up all 3 of you who did).
I've seen a few here and there, and it's worse for NES games, people gawking over how much a 200-300 dollar game is absolutely worth skipping a car payment on. It's baffling.
+James Myers Would it help if I got the other two to comment here? :) Seriously though, it really was an amazingly innovative game... at the time. Now, with real life taking up all of my time, the save state trick is the best thing ever invented for games like this. And as a point of interest: becoming a human in this game is so tricky and precise that I actually have a reason to return to the game. Eventually. lol
It seems a retranslation patch was done recently for the game, in case people watching this want to try it out. There's not a huge load of text on this game, but obviously this game isn't immune to localization mishaps just like any other SNES game.
the sound track starts at a 10 but falls off quickly. eventually hitting somewhere around a 2 in some of the mid- late game areas. that grind is much worse later when its done under a 3 note loop
I saw a playthrough of this game when I was little. I wanted to play it but never could. After downloading it for free and obtaining a SNES Emulator, I have to say it's a journey. I'm a Christian, so I don't believe in evolution, however I still find the idea to be fun in an imaginative sort of way. I think I spent over 12 hours yeterday and last night playing through the whole game. It feels strange how much of a slog it can be at times. Even though I'm worn out going through it, part of me wants to try it out again...I love the amount of effort that went into this game, I'm surprised almost nobody remembers it.
Fun fact: This game originally featured a winged human as the ultimate evolutionary form, a screenshot of which even made it into Nintendo Power. Sadly, this was cut from the final release.
You have a really good voice and smart take on things. Talk more. I'd listen to your videos at about 20 min at length. Add in some clever editing and I think you've got a show!

Cheers
A lot of sounds on this game DO sound like other enix games, for instance i was playing dragon warrior on the gbc, and the overworld music kept reminding me of the ocean track of E.V.O
Yup,on some parts.Despite that this is one of the few games where grinding is actually fun.Also,one hint:Don't kill the animals that don't attack you.They may be easy to kill but: 1:They ALWAYS give a small amount of DNA 2:It makes you feel bad for killing innocent creatures ;-;
I don't find the grinding fun, it's pretty tedious and very repetitive. I can see how some won't mind it as much as grinding in other games, but I can see why it ruins the game for people in this one.
+Torgo Gorgo I know what you mean, but i don't find it tedious,i enjoyed killing acanthostegas while they are sleeping and harmelss :> People have opinions,i respect yours, and o can understand if you find it tedious.
lol, he sure did mention that a lot of times. I do remember just wanting to grind so I could get certain evolutions, but it didn't seem like a chore to me. Earthbound, my favorite game ever, is more grindy than this.
The closest game to it concept-wise is, to an extent, Spore, but there other, lesser known titles based around evolution such as Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life, and Species ALRE, the latter still being in development.
This game was cool I rented it a lot as a kid.I wish it was more like Super Metroid though.More open world where you have to use your evolutions to progress to new areas and overcome obstacles.
As a kid, the ability to grind to make up for being bad at video games, is part of the reason that I really loved this game. Those bosses were a pain in the ass, however. Oh, and the human form sucked. Bird form for life!
I still think there is a good amount of games left that are worth covering, like S.O.S., B.O.B. and Plok or Judge Dredd, Alien 3 and SeaQuest DSV, for some overlooked license games. And if that doesn't do it, there are SFC games, even translated ones.
Nage Líbre ftw (no, it's not wrestling, despite the title) Shining Force with high school girls, and instead of weapons you switch sporting club memberships (boxing, karate, kendo, volleyball, etc)
E.V.O. needs to be on VC/Switch or be remade. I would say it needs a Sequel but "Miscreation" on Steam IS the Spiritual Sequel to E.V.O. Don't believe me? Well--Giant close-ups of beautiful spirits ladies w/ breats guide you to your end-goal like Gaia does, munching other creatures and giant eggs & DNA Chozo orbs gives you evo points and new parts to evolve your creation just like in E.V.O., and it's a RPG-esk platformer that requires alot of grinding & farming to "git-gud".
This is my top SNES game that I want to play again but have no copy in order to do so. I'm not into emulating (yet) but whenever I get to it, this'll be the first target. Thanks for this video.
I recently played through this game again on an emulator and used a cheat for unlimited evolution points so I didn't have to grind. The game is ridiculously short without all the grinding, like you can beat it in under an hour. Still a decent game though, used to love this as a kid.
yea I would love to pick up this game. Just too damn pricey. Another great ENIX release that never saw a market here. I've heard some of the fun is finding the secret transformations like the mermaid or the terradactly and other stuff.
Just giving my insignificant opinion - Yes totally totally loved it from beginning slow evolution type concept but then abt 50% thru it went off a tangent abit with graphics and gameplay i went on but kinda left it at about a level where im a bird or sabretooth i think and never finished it altho i really do want to now
+Mada Which ones? He already tallied them up pretty well in his past videos. Rest are platformers, brawlers, fighting games & puzzle games. Some more interesting than others + some odd ones.
@@rhaytham i was a crazy terodactlile looking creatures with feathers and big teeth she and whooped my ass every time my bird thing was to slow to get out of the way

Koichi Sugiyama of Dragon Quest fame, composed this soundtrack. It's simply amazing.
I fucking love this game!!! my only gripe is that you can pick the wrong appendage and your creature can suck all of a sudden
That and you can waste experience points on horns that break
@@williamRRR Horns are great! They're cheap and count as a transformation, so they heal you up fully! That can make them really useful against bosses.

Then there is Seaman
This is an alright game, but I'm glad you're a sane person who agrees this is not 200 bucks worth of game. It makes me cringe when I see a reviewer say "OH MAN, TOTALLY WORTH IT AT ANY PRICE!". Really? Cause no, nostalgia is one thing, but nobody had EVO growing up (shut up all 3 of you who did).
+James Myers Do people really say that? No game is worth even $100+, you're better off paying bills
I've seen a few here and there, and it's worse for NES games, people gawking over how much a 200-300 dollar game is absolutely worth skipping a car payment on. It's baffling.
+James Myers
>.>
+LordSephleon I knew one of you three would show up, good thing I prefaced that statement, lol.
+James Myers Would it help if I got the other two to comment here? :)
Seriously though, it really was an amazingly innovative game... at the time. Now, with real life taking up all of my time, the save state trick is the best thing ever invented for games like this.
And as a point of interest: becoming a human in this game is so tricky and precise that I actually have a reason to return to the game. Eventually. lol
So glad I bought this back when it was $50.
It seems a retranslation patch was done recently for the game, in case people watching this want to try it out. There's not a huge load of text on this game, but obviously this game isn't immune to localization mishaps just like any other SNES game.
Really hoping this one's next to get some love seeing as ActRaiser got a remake outta nowhere last year.
Taking liberties with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution? I'm there, dude.
Hu huh , thanks Beavis
the sound track starts at a 10 but falls off quickly. eventually hitting somewhere around a 2 in some of the mid- late game areas. that grind is much worse later when its done under a 3 note loop
This is the game i was trying to remember that i absolutely loved as a kid
did you already review Knights of the Round, Legend, Sparkster and Pirates of Dark Water?
+zackdufois Yes, no, yes, no
+SNES drunk Pirates of Dark Water is a must play ;), Legend not so much, but still fun in coop (but it's very slow paced)
I believe if you make a bird you can find a secret cave that gives you the ability to create or evolve into an alien
You have a really good voice and smart take on things. Talk more. I'd listen to your videos at about 20 min at length. Add in some clever editing and I think you've got a show!
This is a game that could be great with a remake. It has a really neat concept that is bogged down by the gameplay.
Solid game. Personally really enjoyed it
Seems like an awesome concept...🤘🏼💯✔️
Jetsons-skyblazer-pitfall-true lies-speedy gonzales-cynernator-firepower 2000-choplifter-hook-rock and roll racing-super punch out-turn and burn-out to lunch-knights of the round-imperium-super tennis-ignition factor-...i know your amazing channel but just random titles i like and i don't remember you covering. Cheers
Just made a quick research and you covered 5 of them 😁
A lot of sounds on this game DO sound like other enix games, for instance i was playing dragon warrior on the gbc, and the overworld music kept reminding me of the ocean track of E.V.O
OMG I played this game so much when I was a kid I loved it
Am here due to the last track in this video being in the snes relaxing video lol.
Why no dragon footage though? That's the best part! Also the baby elephant form.
guilty pleasure SNES game, love the music!
Funnily, the soundtrack for the original game was done by Sugiyama, composer of Dragon Quest.
I'm not entirely sure - but is this game grindy?
Yup,on some parts.Despite that this is one of the few games where grinding is actually fun. Also, one hint:Don't kill the animals that don't attack you. They may be easy to kill but:
1:They ALWAYS give a small amount of DNA
2:It makes you feel bad for killing innocent creatures ;-;
I don't find the grinding fun, it's pretty tedious and very repetitive. I can see how some won't mind it as much as grinding in other games, but I can see why it ruins the game for people in this one.
+Torgo Gorgo
I know what you mean, but i don't find it tedious,i enjoyed killing acanthostegas while they are sleeping and harmelss :>
People have opinions,i respect yours, and o can understand if you find it tedious.
lol, he sure did mention that a lot of times. I do remember just wanting to grind so I could get certain evolutions, but it didn't seem like a chore to me. Earthbound, my favorite game ever, is more grindy than this.
Guys, she was being sarcastic. Poe's law never fails.
is there any game like this today? This game is still unique 20 years later.
The closest game to it concept-wise is, to an extent, Spore, but there other, lesser known titles based around evolution such as Evolution: The Game of Intelligent Life, and Species ALRE, the latter still being in development.
True über grind heavy. Awesome video
This game was cool I rented it a lot as a kid.I wish it was more like Super Metroid though.More open world where you have to use your evolutions to progress to new areas and overcome obstacles.
This game looks hella interesting. I never even knew about it till now .
As a kid, the ability to grind to make up for being bad at video games, is part of the reason that I really loved this game. Those bosses were a pain in the ass, however. Oh, and the human form sucked. Bird form for life!
I discovered this ga.e later in life and absolutely loved it, takes some grinding but it is an incredibly fun game
I like to call it the snes version of spore
would you recommend a repro cart?
I still think there is a good amount of games left that are worth covering, like S.O.S., B.O.B. and Plok or Judge Dredd, Alien 3 and SeaQuest DSV, for some overlooked license games. And if that doesn't do it, there are SFC games, even translated ones.
+Ryuma King FYI Ryuma, your "Best EU Exclusive Games" video is coming next month
Love this game!
This is my top SNES game that I want to play again but have no copy in order to do so. I'm not into emulating (yet) but whenever I get to it, this'll be the first target.
Thanks for this video.
Fantasy is my favorite genre.
I recently played through this game again on an emulator and used a cheat for unlimited evolution points so I didn't have to grind. The game is ridiculously short without all the grinding, like you can beat it in under an hour. Still a decent game though, used to love this as a kid.
I completely forgot about this game. I need to find a way to play this (aside from paying $200 for the cart).
yea I would love to pick up this game. Just too damn pricey. Another great ENIX release that never saw a market here. I've heard some of the fun is finding the secret transformations like the mermaid or the terradactly and other stuff.
I wonder if this is in any way related to Cubivore on Gamecube.
So it was trying to be Spore before it was cool? That's pretty amazing!
Just giving my insignificant opinion - Yes totally totally loved it from beginning slow evolution type concept but then abt 50% thru it went off a tangent abit with graphics and gameplay i went on but kinda left it at about a level where im a bird or sabretooth i think and never finished it altho i really do want to now
Yeah, I have played it enough I'd recognize the music for sure
Not enough dinosaur footage.
I have an original copy of this game, along with the box and instruction manual. I could probably sell it for $500 or so on ebay.
Pro tip: pick up the $40 super famicon version
And to think, Burst_Error is going to torment himself streaming this
You should cover some Famicom RPGs. That'd be kinda cool.
+Mada Which ones? He already tallied them up pretty well in his past videos. Rest are platformers, brawlers, fighting games & puzzle games. Some more interesting than others + some odd ones.
CyrusBluebird I was thinking about something like Radia Senki, Mouryou Senki Madara, Lagrange Point, Esper dream, and some more.
If they recreated this for ps4, and advertised the shit out of it. It would become the best game of the century.
I like a lot this game
this is one of my favorite games never could beat the female yeti tho
lol it took me a long time by keep reloading my last save everytime i died.
@@rhaytham i tried for days but never could get her love this game tho
@@whatsreallygoingon253 Ahh probably the build? Nevertheless love this game too.
@@rhaytham i was a crazy terodactlile looking creatures with feathers and big teeth she and whooped my ass every time my bird thing was to slow to get out of the way
@@whatsreallygoingon253 lol that's probably why, i used a small tough-looking rat and jump a lot so i could dodge the claps.
