- Today I take a look at the NEW JPX 925 Hot Metal HIGH LAUNCH and what it brings to Golfers of all needs. The original High Launch first in the JPX 923 range was specifically designed for SLOW Swing Speed Golfers, however it became apparent quite quickly that not only Slow Swingers could use it but also Fast Swing Speed golfers needing help from off centre strikes.
The New JPX 925 High Launch proves to be one of the most forgiving irons on the market.

This guy is the best reviewer on RUclips, reviews what you want to see, clear and straight to the point
Obviously this type of comment is the only one where I am allowed to have a biased opinion 😊 thanks very much for your kind feedback... I try my best with every video and am constantly considering ways to improve my content.
Have you seen the latest Callaway Ti Fusion video? I've upgraded the Forgiveness section of the video.... Let me know what you think of the new graphic 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you SO MUCH for showing the results for different swing speeds. My average club speed is roughly 80mph and it’s always been difficult to see how certain clubs would suit me and my speed (or lack there of lol). The fact that you take the time to do this is greatly appreciated.
You are very welcome. I'm amazed that other reviewers don't see the benefits of doing it, although I know how long the datasets take to do so maybe I do know the exact reason why no one else bothers 😊😊👍🏻
This iron takes the #1 spot for all irons I have data for as most forgiveness.
Wowsers 😱🙂👍
I was going to ask how this compares to the ZX4 mk2 and the Cleveland launcher XL for forgiveness but I might have my answer 😂
@@thomassimmons2989 Well the Cleveland XL is a different class of club , I wouldn't think of it in comparison of forgiveness but for slow swing speed players, ZX4 is a club born out of the distance wars, its middle is super hot and goes far but its not that "forgiving" you may find your self losing almost twice the distance away from same miss off the middle than this 925HM HL. Now if you struggle with miss hits forcing your club face open or closed at impact, then what your looking for is a club with high "MOI" ( fancy term that means resists twisting).
Your three swing speed tests are unique and extremely valuable. I'm 83. Your 70 mph swing speed results are the ones most relevant to me and nobody else does them. It's interesting to see what data the scratch or pro swinger gets with new clubs, but if they are all you get it's not very useful for the majority. Your results with the JPX925 hot metal high launch are pretty much what I can get with my 31 degree lofted forged blade 6 iron at my best. With the caveat that the JPX 7 iron is probably much easier to hit consistently. Carry, peak height and descent angle become a real problem for the senior golfer like me. It can be frustratingly hard to get a descent angle over 38-39 for anything less than an 8 or 9 iron. Your 70 mph swing speed test of the Hot Metal Pro 7 iron showed exactly that issue with a DA of 38.4 and runout of 14 yards that probably means off the green. I still drive quite well, can average about 205-220 total. Occasionally I can get one out to 235-240 if I happen to reach a downhill incline. 25 years ago I played the blue tees at 6830 on my favorite course. 10 or 15 years ago the white tees at 6405. But even though I have now gone up to the gold tees at 5946 yards, I face a lot of approach shots in the 140-160 range. That course has 11 par 4s. From the gold tees, four measure 339 to 353. They give me a chance to use a 9 iron to 6 iron, maybe even a PW. Six measure 360 to 380. That means using the 27 degree 11W, 24 degree 9W or 21 degree 7W I have added over the past year to replace my 3 through 5 irons. One is a monster at 410 that I can't reach with a drive and a 3 wood, and keep insisting should be about 50 yards shorter. If hit correctly, these high lofted woods will produce enough height to stop. But of course one can't always be perfect. It does seem like what your tests point to is that for the old geezers like me, the cutoff point for irons is pretty much at 7. Thanks again for all your thorough and hard work. You're a public service!!
Thanks John for the kind comment. You have done absolutely the right thing by applying the right tee boxes for your distance capabilities. Too many golfers keep playing from the back tees regardless of their ability to hit the ball the required length.
Main it's trying to eek out every last drop of usable distance, whether that's a perfectly fitted driver or optimising your irons and keeping on top of the short game when greens are missed....
Good on you for continuing to enjoy the game 👍🏻👍🏻
Are these new Mizuno irons available for sale over there? I checked the PGA Tour Super Store I go to to use their practice bays with launch monitors . They said they don’t expect them until mid-September. Seems like all the big manufacturers are experiencing delays.
They will be available at Retail very soon. All manufacturers run normally a 3 date launch.
Media embargo day is when they first arrive online to see reviews etc.
Pre Launch Day is the day that the custom fitting heads are available and any custom orders can be processed.
Arrive at Retail, when the full rack sets of irons arrive in store to be displayed.
You won't have to wait long. The UK already have their Fitting heads so can be used for fitting sales now. 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut lucky uk. Fitting heads not yet here.
I really enjoyed this video. 72 years old here
Really glad you found it useful 👍👍
Excellent review doing the appropriate swing speeds. Can’t see too many other you tubers bothering to do that when of course they should be.
I don't know of many if any that do 3 different swing speed testing, gap analysis where possible and full forgiveness testing by registering purpose miss hits from around the hitting area whilst keeping club head delivery the same..... Yep it's a tonne of work 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Your reviews are one of the best out there. Knowing how the long irons work at slower swing speeds is great info. Never really focused on decent angle til I saw these reviews. Would be interesting to see a shaft matched to the swing speed. That would make the reviews perfect!!
I'm very fortunate that I'm not shaft sensitive as you can see by the fact that my dynamic loft etc doesn't change with the speed changing from 70 all the way to 90mph. Most golfers are very shaft sensitive so absolutely would see a difference, but it's great for testing purposes to be able to show raw information 👍🏻
Thank you for your help. Been looking at this and other similar reviews (I.e. G730) and the advice for being fitted is extremely useful.
I can't afford these, but I'd definitely be tempted by them more than most you try. 😁👍
Fair point, although with other manufactures pushing on the prices and in some cases quite considerably, soon these will be seen as a premium bargain 😂👍
Hi Jay. Long time subscriber. I swing my 7 iron about 80mph and am stepping down from steel shafted Apex CF16 into a graphite option. Looking at the 925 HL, Zipcore XL, and Stealth HD. Watched your reviews on all of them. Suggestions?
How well do you say you strike the ball, always middle, mostly middle , hardly middle. Looking for more distance or tighter shot grouping.
Hi Kev, thanks for being a loyal subscriber..... I'd personally want to test the all, always difficult to find somewhere to test them all on the same day and side by side. Not all the options above will be available in the same shaft options and that is a fairly important piece of the puzzle for the majority of golfers.
All options are good options and sensible ones also. I'd test them and see which ones gives you what you want more than the others 👍
Great review! These would have been the perfect club for me 2+ years ago when my ball striking wasn't very consistent but my club head speed was still relatively high. In fact if you could order those bent an extra 2* so they are close to traditional lofts they would still be a great club for someone like me. But I love the look and feel of my MP245 so I wouldn't want to switch back!
I wouldn't too to be fair as the 245's are a great iron set. Not to burst bubbles but I had it confirmed today that golfers will be able to order the new Hot Metal range in 2 degrees weak and with 1 degree lie change. If they need 2 degrees of Lie change then they can only have 1 degree in Loft +/- 👍
@@AskGolfNut that is great info! A set of super forgiving clubs with traditional lofts (33* 7i) would fit a huge percentage of golfers I think.
@william_hartman unfortunately I don't think it's common knowledge yet as they aren't released but hopefully the fitters will know to inform customers 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut I actually recently got a part time job at a sports store in the US as a fitter and club tech. I've been using some of the things I've learned from you (and others like Lou Stagner and Tuttleman) to help the mostly new players who come into the store. It's been fun so far, even though it's only 10-15 hours per week for me!
@william_hartman that's where it starts 😊 remember technically there is no law saying you need x amount of qualifications or even be a pga pro to disperse your knowledge to others, and even in the coaching realm, different to fitting where its more maths and science, with coaching it's really individual coaching opinion to change a golfer in a certain direction. I see the greatest variation in coaching, where custom fitting done the way custom fitting should be done as in with measured data, the variance should be absolutely minimal 👍🏻
Looks like they have done it again! I have the 923HL, and I really like them. Is there any reason to “upgrade”? Not looking to, just wondering if the difference is a step or a jump!
Step not Jump..... Very impressive Forgiveness level for an Iron for sure, whether there is enough of a step to justify upgrading well that would be up to the golfer. I'd personally say probably not but well worth a test for a bit of fun, wouldn't hurt 👍
@@AskGolfNut I tend to look at it this way , if you were correctly fitted into a set of clubs in the passed 5 years the chances that any current iron being noticeably better than what your playing are unlikely. That all goes out the window if you no longer have the same swing input as you did when you were fitted, maybe you became a better ball striker, you gained club head speed or lost club head speed ect. Now a new correctly fitted set or adjusting your current set could produce actually significant gains.
This looks like an unstoppable super game improvement iron. Not my style for low or mid irons but I would seriously consider it in 5 iron as a hybrid replacement. Wow.
I said the same when I started to hit the 5 iron the distance it was going and at the height that I wouldn't have a hope with my equivalent iron 😀
Great review Jay so well explained and given me food for thought. Tried the Wilson Dynapwr forged lovely and easy to hit but as a senior with a club head speed which varies week to week from 67-74 lost distance and too much spin. So far the best has been G430 , but I am worried about my swing speed although I’m a senior I’m consistent and a straight hitter. I’ve mentioned before that I launch naturally high 23.- 25 degrees so working on my strike and compressing the ball. However from all your excellent videos this HL seems to look after the slow speed player. I also prefer to have sensible lofts for my long irons more useable. Might the HL be my best bet ?
23-25 is quite high getting some more forward press on your strike will certainly help but as a senior i'm sure too many training swings take there toll. You probably found the low static loft on the G430 worked well to bring launch and spin down. Jay will have better advice but if it were me i would consider thinking about playing stronger lofted scoring irons and then play hybrids 6-5-4.
@@andrewbickley5271 Many thanks appreciate your advice.
Hi Seve, I agree with Andrews take on it, I would like to know where the very high initial launch comes from and its defo the culprit for the high spin numbers to. Early release of the wrist angle into extension before the ball??
You could look at stronger lofted irons to put a patch on the problem but with launch angles like that, I would want to tweak the swing to be a little more efficient and then you open up a whole new balanced approach at equipment selection 👍
@@AskGolfNut Hi Jay thanks for the advice and working on compressing the ball as I tend to to catch the ground just be for the ball and add 2 degrees to my loft. Need to get it sorted with a lesson as I’ve been playing very consistently with good scores and keep it in the fairway.
Anyway decided to postpone new irons till the new year, as I said so far the G430 has been best and new model February/ March.
I did well with the Cobra Darkspeed too obviously strong lofts.
@@AskGolfNut Thanks Jay, need to compress the ball more efficiently as I tend to hit a little before the ball and add 2 degrees to my loft, so will get a lesson and put off my new irons till the New year. The G430 is being replaced March so can check them out. I did quite well with the Darkspeed too.
Love the reviews on all three JPX 925 hot metals, I have the JPX 921HM with 921 5 Flihi and 923 6 fli hi how well would that blend in with the JPX 925.
Also thinking about changing out the fli-hi's for ST230 max 5 & 6 hybrids swing speed is 75 +/- mph
I appreciate your thoughts, looking forward to testing out & upgrading.
75 MPH swing speed is with 7 iron
I'm trying to get hold of some new fli hi to test and compare up against the HL etc and will do it at low speeds also to see what if any benefits there are 👍
Also you'll defo win by going to the full length hybrids as they will generate a higher head speed with more ball speed and then you can loft up even more to get the right gapping with even better height 👍
@@AskGolfNut Jay thanks so much for the input, always like how you conduct a review it you put a lot of work in it and try to give numbers for the mere mortals as well as the higher swing speeds. I'm a big Mizuno fan and with your help it's easier to dial in the bag.
Love the depth
You want to see the raw footage before I edit it :-) most of the time the video is twice as long as it finishes being 🙂
@@AskGolfNut Soooooo many toe strikes to edit out huh.
😊 Nope all the rubbish was left in, it's the chat between shots and the numbers side of the video than needs the big pair of scissors ✂ 🤣
Great review Jay! Any plans to test the matching Fli-Hi iron replacements? Would love to see the HL transition from 7 iron to 6 FliHi at 70 and 80 mph.
That is my intention but haven't received any media sample for the Fli Hi. Would it be better to have a 28 deg to match the loft of the 7 irons in the HM and HM Pro and near 6 in the HM HL, that way we can see the differences in potential flight ????
@@AskGolfNut yeah, I’d stop at the HL 7 and transition to a 28 degree FliHi. Interested to know the gap at 70/80 mph swing speeds - guessing I’m somewhere in
Nice one Jay, thanks.
You're very welcome 👍🏻
Do we think there will be a 925 Forged releasing soon?
Although no official word as yet, it seems as though the JPX925 is following a similar release pattern of that of the JPX923. The 923 Hot Metal irons were released Sept and the Forged etc are released first thing in the new year....That is my educated guess 👍
Jay. I assume the 925HL, or any other traditional iron, can't really compete with forgiveness and height against a hybrid style iron like the Cleveland Halo XL. Or could they? How would the JPX 925HL compare to the Callaway Ai Smoke HL? This would be for a 70-80 mph 7 iron ss.
In all honesty it would be very very close... There may be a winner by small margin but we are talking about 2 very similar designs and target markets so I wouldn't expect to see a large gap between either of the 2 👍🏻
I think the concept of what you gain from a hybrid has been watered down over the years and why they appeared originally as a replacement to long irons, are they more forgiving sure but its not a massive amount, the amount it does give you was so you could play a longer shaft to gain more club speed at the same loft and a slightly bigger chance of a miss hit is countered. With 2 clubs of the same loft, the club head speed difference will effect height a bigger amount than the club design. Hybrids tend be to 1 club or 1.5 clubs longer than the iron of the same loft and that can be 3mph per club length.
These vs the Cleveland!!
Which Cleveland model would you see the best option for compare? 👍🏻
Jay, how would a Hot Metal 7 iron at 28* compare to the HL 6 iron at 28*? Basically couldn't you just play a HM one club higher?
its more than just a loft change , different vertical CG location to get the ball in the air without dramatically increasing spin and losing distance.
You could although the CG on the HL is lower and further back giving gains in launch and also reduction in curvature. So there are benefits of the HL design over just loft 👍
I must admit I’m confused by this too . I tested the 923 HL 7 iron recently and it almost exactly matched the distance and spin of my forged tec x 8 iron?
Every golfer is different and all clubs are too, more variance is seen in one than another and projected results aren't always seen in all people.. That's why it's imperative that a golfer tests to see, if they have an itch to answer a question it's important that in the end they go out and find out how if may or may not impact their games 👍🏻 👍🏻
Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
Jay, another extremely informative video . For us slower swing speeds are there drivers similar to high launch for us? Appreciate your thoughts. Smash that like button 👇
Absolutely, Ping make one, Mizuno have also in the past. Titleist have also.... Its a common thing now to see a lighter head weight and shaft option with more loft for that very purpose 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut Thanks as always
Can they be improved upon?
Not much room for improvement short of a rule change or a serious shift materials used. This iron has a COR of 0.8 legal limit is 0.83 most irons are 0.78. the best game iron probably doesn't look "good" enough.
There's always potential in things to improve, physics dictate certain restraints that is for sure. What it will come down to very much so at one point is that the manufacturers can work on objective improvements, but the subjective side of things, looks and feel can also be a huge marketing driver. We've seen already the amount of traffic commenting on the Looks that its not what the golfing public are expecting and making something that polarises opinion in this way can have implications on sales. Time will tell and a lot is initial reaction which calms quite quickly. 👍
I love Mizuno… got 921 HMP in my bag…. But these…. Sorry Mizuno… they look like the SIM2 irons…and those were ugly
