- I take a vintage Craftsman round head ratchet wrench apart, clean it, lube it, and put it back together. I bought several ratchet wrenches at a thrift shop for cheap. But they were all in rough shape. They were all at least a little rusty. The wrench is labelled 943797 and has a thumbwheel. It turned kind of rough, and the direction switch wouldn't change. Cleaning and lubricating the pawls fixed the direction lever problem. It works great now. Easy repair!

THANKS 4 your video, I have a 3/8 943796 with the same problem, I'm now 63 and my parents gave me a the set 45 years ago, this ratchet hasn't worked for 20 years BUT wasn't about to give it up, just waiting on the time and a way to figure out HOW to take it apart and clean & lube, u DA MAN !

I get just sick to my stomach when I think of all the ratchets I turned in for warranty replacement that I could have repaired. Some of them were favorites that I still miss terribly. I should have started watching these videos years ago.
That was the best type of Craftsman ratchets ever made! I bought mine new in the mid 80s. I use molybdenum disulfate grease on my ratchets.
Nice job. I had to save an abused 1/4" driver that was full of sludge.
Popped off the circlip, sprayed it full of penetrating lube, then drowned it with carb cleaner. After it started moving easily, lubed it, and cleaned it again. Then I gave it a light greasing and put it back together. The hardest part was putting the circlip back in place. And it works like new now

Took it apart, cleaned it up inside, used Lubriplate and a sticky kind of bike chain oil. Back together, runs quiet and fine. Thanks again for the "how to".

I know it's been 5 years sure hope you didn't throw it away throw them out because you can still get them replaced for free by swapping them they just won't have the old styles

Hey that was cool! I've got an 8 year old boy and it looks like he's following in my footsteps of being a mechanic that works on anything with wheels, gears, or makes noise. He is already helping me in my shop! You inspired me now to go buying used tools for his collection! I whent the other day to a Mexican flea market and picked up a big Dewalt metal chop saw with a brand new cutting wheel in it for $15.00. It wasnt working. Took it home threw a set of brushes in it, and now I've got a grest saw!

When cleaning the inside of the ratchet head, I like to use an old toothbrush with a penetrant like Liquid Wrench. Then I wipe off any rust with a cloth, and add a few drops of oil all around with a separate toothbrush.
About lubricating the spring ball, I use a small flat head screwdriver to press it down flush with the face

Nice video. I just did the same with a pair of old Craftsman 943796 (3/8 drive) ratchets I picked up at a pawn shop for $2 each. I'd rather do this than buy new China junk any day.
FYI, Craftsman "Tri-Wing" (9-47395/96/97) ratchets are made in Taiwan, not USA.
The first number 9 stands for the tool department.
Nice video, another way of cleaning small and hard to reach parts is to put it in an ultra-sonic cleaner, you can use any cleaner with the water you want, maybe an industrial degreaser for example, works very well to loosen the gunk.
good job on remembering the ball, no-one ever remembers!, i prefer a grease on my ratchets makes them a little quieter and stays in those rececesses to keep out the grit

About preferong grease from oil, i do prefer grease than oil but it depends of the teeth of the ratch, there are ratch with wide open teeth maybe the 20 something to 40 soemthing teeth you can put grease, but in this kind of ratch the teeth are very little also for the 72 84 112 teeth the grease will not gonna function, and those ratchets will have to being lubricated with oil. +Héctor Rangel i didnt know they went finer than 72! i have a 1/4 size 72 that i do use automotive general purpose grease, just carefully, so it can squish out, i dont pack any ratchet full, and find it does not slip, but i defer to you as i have no experience of such fine ratchets, i have some older facom j151 series, which i regard as fine but are around 72 teeth, and are happy with careful grease. thanks for the reply!

Nice find, I read on the Garage Journal (online handyman forum) that these types of Craftsman ratchets are quite desirable. I think it might be because of ridged lip that lets you rotate the ratchet by hand.
It's kind of strange to me how fully assembled this ratchet is, most Craftsman ratchets can be fully broken down, but this one is sort of a self contained unit.
I think a lot of the round head ratchets are like this.
I like to use red grease, multi purpose lithium grease automatic trans fluid gear oil and worst case wd 40. What do u guys think
I have a quarter inch the same style I don't want to replace it it's Unique is there some kind of kit? Underlined 9 43795. It skips I believe it is weak internally? The ball I will keep working on it is compressed I did remove a socket that was stuck on it. Went to the store today could have came home with a brand new one I guess I'm a sucker for old things becoming an antique myself
I found an old set like this that work fine. Would it be okay to just spray some super penetrating oil in them occasionally? They're a bit rusted but otherwise work well.
I hope you cleaned out the the teeth on the outer ring .Thats very important so the pawls engage positively and don't slip. A lot of old grease and dirt tends to clog them over time.You didn't show that but everything else was right on.Super Lube IS the best for ratchets after you get in the tight spots with lighter oil.Thanks for the video, a lot of people don't realize how important tool maintenance is.
Yes, I brushed them with the wire brush too. I had video'd that as well, but some of the WD-40 splattered on my camera lens and blurred a big chunk of the video I shot. I enjoy taking different ratchets apart to see what's in them.
Nice score from the thrift shop.. The video is 6:44, and the procedure probably took less than 15min. I've rebuilt a few myself, after being shown how (when I was a kid) by my Dad. At that time, my attitude was "just take it back to Sears or wherever it will be warranty'd or exchanged. Sometimes even competitors will take the other guys' stuff in hopes that you'll buy some of theirs. I suppose there is some merit to buying tools that come with lifetime warranty but in cases like this where it's just a matter of filth and rust, I now prefer to rebuild rather than replace. Some of the older stuff built here in North America is far superior to the stuff floating over by boat today. Nicely done, thanks for sharing.
The husky round head rachet mechanism fits this Craftsman more nicer and smoother

I have these exact ratchets...notice there is no USA stamp on handle.
i just put white grease on a toothpick and swirled it around

So if you were to get one of these, and cut the ratchet just where the head is off the handle, could you technically have a thumb ratchet? I don't like this ratchet design from Craftsman, I like it probably less than the common raised panel ratchet, but I think this might work, and I am down to try

I had luck putting the internals a small cup of turpentine and soak. Then use a small brush to clean. Follow with a dip in motor oil.
Can you use wd-40 as grease for ratchets?

Shrug. This was an old wrench. I have no idea if they still sell them or something like them. Search Sears.

Have you tried cleaning and lubing the wrench. Often that works wonders.
They will replace them not repair them..
I’m still looking for someone who takes these wrenches apart completely. You only removed the split wring and dropped the mechanism out. True, you can get it clean enough and lubed but I’d like to know what’s inside and how to take it completely apart so I can satisfy myself I did a complete job.
Aside from that, your videography, sound quality and closeups were superb.
I'm also trying to find a video of how to seperate the part that locks

Why don't people like pulling the cap off where the spring and bearing is? I did it to mine, drilled the hole put a bigger spring and a 5mm bearing, mine is a 1/2" so I thought the bigger bearing would be better and it is
I don't needto send you a picture this is the ratchet I was talking about I believe that there are three USA made ratchet if the other two were made in the US please advise if I am incorrect I got my ratchet in 2 sizes 1/2 and 1/4 I never had a 3/8 vet of this ratchet

Best thing to do is disassemble then put the parts into a container of gear oil overnight.

Andrew Ritchie yeah, that im trying to find out but thankfully i manged to disassemble it to the smallest. turns out you first just need need to pick out the small pin and spring out until then it should come apart. same as assembling it back in.
Don’t think soaking does anything. Steel doesn’t absorb oil.
OK, My racheet is very similar to yours, as disassembly looks to be the same, and it has the same type of spring retainer clip, but my part number is either pt w38301 or pr w38301. Brand/mfr name is not on the tool. . (the pt or pr is half overlayed so it's difficult to say what the letters are. it's a 3/8" push button release and this push button is also the; "on" and "off" directions. My gears are totally worn out, I can't see how to remove it, It's clean & not rusty, I didn't wont to force it apart & I don't know where to get a new rebuild kit (as mfr name is not on the tool ) any help please.. text me even call me. 7 0 7 - - 3 three 3- zero778 "" WILL ""
If they are worn out, probably just replace the wrench. If the manufacturers name is not on the wrench, it's probably a very cheap wrench to begin with.
