It's probably best used for traveling on the Surface during Early Hardmode. But at least you can get Pigron at the start of Hardmode, start farming for a Nimbus Staff instead of Ice Golems, and save yourself a Platinum Coin. Then you can kill The Destroyer, craft a Megashark and Reforge it with the Platinum Coin you saved. It's a potential alternative.
Here's an idea Make Unholy/Blood Water Prehardmode and find an area in the Ice Cavern Layer with a big water source. Keep throwing the corrupted water until the evil biome music starts, then make a 4-5 block divide around the corrupted area. How to make Unholy/Blood Water: Ebon/Crimsand Blocks 10 Bottled Water Corrupt/Crimson Seed from Dryad during Fullmoon. Once you start Hardmode you will have an isolated evil biome to farm for Scaly Truffle and Evil Biome fish.
Me and my friend also use the slime mount to travel really fast down the hellavotor just make sure you have wings (or horseshoe for early game) so you don't die

this video seems biased against the basilisk and pigron mounts. the basilisks ability to quickly change direction and reach top speed while in the air makes it a much better choice for most situations than the unicorn mount, so it's really not a case of being outclassed, its a better general mount whereas the unicorn can kite certain bosses better and travel faster. however it really shines with a blizzard or sandstorm in a balloon. getting the truffle is very simple, just fish wherever the pigron enemy can spawn. and it's not really useless at all because you can get it at the start of hardmode quite easily, where all other flying hard-mode mounts are post plantera. even then it still competes with alternatives, flying higher than the reindeer and being faster than the ufo and fishron. also, in the video you only accelerate while descending, so it was much slower. these two are actually my favorite mounts, both are good generalists and can be acquired easily with some preparation at the start of hardmode.
Agreed. Try using a Unicorn Mount anywhere else than a sky bridge or open field and you will be annoyed by the terrain stopping you. The Basilisk made traveling in caves and fighting in events like Old One's Army much easier. It also resists sandstorms THANK GOD! Pigron always seemed fast with everything but turning around. I guess he can can help take on the Twins? I mostly used Pigron for Biome travel.

A found a good way to fight bosses post moon lord is to use a ranger set, the saucer, and use a legendary sdmg with chlorophyte rounds, you're able to kill bosses relatively easy and you don't take much damage
Cute Fishron is also great for emergency retreats if you're low on HP, upping its move speed and damage quite a fair bit. It's actually one of the best mounts in the game. If it was obtainable without having to murder Duke Fishron in Expert Mode, it'd be in the #1 spot guaranteed.
1.slime mount actually allows doubled falling speed, which is great for some fights where circling is extremely important. 2. Fishron mount also get the really fast movement when the rider’s hp is below 50%.

JaceDaAce 1017 I play on Xbox my man. I really wish I could help you because i do have a giant arena for bosses but here’s what I can tell you from my experience. I used -Titanium armor For accessories I used -Star veil -Rocket Boots -Wings -Obsidian shield -moonstone Potions -iron skin potion -Swiftness potion -regeneration potion -a meal of any kind -thorns potion -hunter potion -greater healing potion I also used campfires too. For weapons I used a mythril repeater with jester arrows and a cutlass. For combat I would take out the round probes that float around the destroyer so I wouldn’t take extra damage and I lined up the shot so the arrows would go down most of the body since they can go through enemies with no problem. That helped with defeating him multiple times. I know this may not be the best setup but it definitely helped with pre mech setups. I hope this helps you. Good luck.
Basilisk is better than the unicorn especially with the bundle of balloons,unlike the unicorn the basilisk can accelerate midair so for world travel its perfect
The turtle mount is honestly so useful, the land mobility is so damn slow it allows you to perfectly allign yourself in tight gaps between projectiles.
The pigron mount is really useful until you get the UFO. It frees you the boots and wings slots for other more combat oriented accessories and it flies way more than basic wings + lighting boots.
I got the Honeyed Goggles in my most recent playthrough and thought it was an expert item. For early game, it could be. Stop fall damage, wing-level flight, stability when constructing without ground (like building in the sky, or mining upwards). It has everything but speed.
No joke, I legitimately got the Hardy Saddle from the very first Golden Crate I opened since the 1.3.5 update ( on mobile ). I apparently have terrible, yet godlike rng. Kill King Slime a ton of times? Nah, no Slime Saddle. Open your first Golden Crate since 1.3.5? Here, have literally the least useful mount ever. Thanks, Terraria, thanks.. giving me the least useful mount as the very first one I’ve ever gotten.

Pigron mount isn't complicated at all, literally just go to hallow caverns, place a bunch of snow blocks until the background changes and then fish for a while. It's also not outshadowed by the other hardmode mounts, if anything I'd say the unicorn is pretty useless. The pigron mount might have less flight than wings, but it allows you to open up an accessory slot for something more relevant. Learn to dodge properly and you don't need wings at all, never ever.
Fun fact: if at half of your HP (ex: 250/500) or lower the cute fishron mount will gain the speed that it normally does, no clue about the damage boost though

The pigron is underated. It offers decent speed and flight without taking an accessory slot. If used with sheild of chuthulu the poor acceleration isn't a problem and if you prepare a fishing spot before hardmode it's quite easy to get. the relatively short flight speed isn't a problem for bosses if you make platforms to land on and this mount is a must have for me untill the shrimpy truffle.

Fun fact: if at half of your HP (ex: 250/500) or lower the cute fishron mount will gain the speed that it normally does, no clue about the damage boost though
Trick: Slime Mount + Vortex in A Bottle = Rocket. Check it, and one more trick: if slime mount will be in a water, you can make a 3x jump.

I was farming 20 hours for the basilisk mount but then i recognised its pc exlusive :(
I beat terraria with slime mount XD (it was useful for its in-liquid float, the bug of multi-jump and its' stomping abillity.)

The Basilisk may be overshadowed by the Unicorn, but it's honestly my favourite just because it looks so cool. Scutlix is a close second
The pigron is underated. It offers decent speed and flight without taking an accessory slot. If used with sheild of chuthulu the poor acceleration isn't a problem and if you prepare a fishing spot before hardmode it's quite easy to get. the relatively short flight speed isn't a problem for bosses if you make platforms to land on and this mount is a must have for me untill the shrimpy truffle.
The king slime mount can double jump if you have Blizzard in a bottle or something else it's a good combo
U Guys can take blessed Apple from Hallow mimic too
